Help with me HJT log. Had problem with CID rowser hijack

Unread postby RifRaf » May 16th, 2007, 6:17 pm

Hi all

Had a problem with CID browser hijack amongst other stuff. Had a read around and ran a few utilities suc as Spybot S&D, Lavasoft AdAware, Microsoft Defender, SuperAntiSpware, Trend Micro Housecall and then Avast. I think that little lot got rid of most of the stuff but I would appreciate someone looking over my log just to put my mind at rest that I got everything.

The only other thing that was highlighted was MP3 Player Utilities 1.51 each time I try to uninstall it comes up and says fatal error and the uninstall ends. I have tried booting into safe mode but you can't uninstall anything then.

Thanks in advance.

Hi RifRaf,

Please Download NoLop to your desktop from the link below...
Link 1
  • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
  • Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
    • Carefully type or copy and paste this series of characters into the lower text area labelled Insert CLSID Here. Include the { }brackets:

      {F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}
  • Now click the button labelled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
  • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
  • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
  • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish. Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log along with a fresh HijackThis log
--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder then rerun the program.--

Hi askey127

Did exactly as you said and it states:

No Infection Files Have Been Found.

I click OK and the NoLop program ends.

Here is a copy of the NoLop log:

RifRaf,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
------------------------------------------------------------
Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE} - C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\APPLIC~1\THIRDF~1\book open.exe (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\bin\jusched.exe"

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msjava.dll

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File and Folder Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), select View, Details. Then navigate to the files/ folders shown below and Delete.
In the case of a folder removal, you may have to delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.

C:\Documents and Settings\Christopher Green\Application Data\THIRDF~1\ <== any folder starting with Thirdf... it may be missing
C:\Windows\System32\msjava.dll <== this file only

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete. If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Tell me if you were able to delete the msjava.dll file.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download the Registry Search Tool from here (scroll down-there are also other tools on the page):
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop.
Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.
Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE

then hit Ok
It may take a while to run.
It will tell you when it's done and offer to have you look at the file.
Say Yes, and when it opens copy/paste the content in your reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Sign in as Christopher Green again. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
Please do not check ANY items in ANY HJT log for removal until instructed to do so.

RifRaf,
Delete both copies of msjava.dll
-----------------------------------------------------------
Copy/Paste/Run a Registry Edit
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new notepad document:
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}\InprocServer32]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}]

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-188909228-3211064663-3079583200-1007\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Settings\{F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}]

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-188909228-3211064663-3079583200-1007\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}]

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-188909228-3211064663-3079583200-1007\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE}\iexplore]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Save it as File Type All Files (not as a Text document, or it won't work).
Save it to your desktop as fixme.reg
Double click fixme.reg and merge it into the registry when asked.
Reboot Windows.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE} - C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\APPLIC~1\THIRDF~1\book open.exe (file missing)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Hi askey

Did everything you asked but the entry:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F9554134-FBC7-31DD-8EEA-CBD259E999CE} - C:\DOCUME~1\CHRIST~1\APPLIC~1\THIRDF~1\book open.exe (file missing)

was not found when I ran HJT. Is this because the registry entries were present but the file was missing ?

Here is my current HJT log:

RifRaf,
Those Browser Helpers in red are not harmful. Just leftovers from McAfee and Windows Live.
You can check them in HJT if you wish, to get rid of the unused reg entries.

Your log looks Clean to me.
I have a few suggestions going forward.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Secure your Internet Explorer
- From within Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
- Click once on the Security Tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Options page
-----------------------------------------------------------
If You Don't Already Have It, Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install and run a Third Party Firewall - The Windows XP firewall is the minimum to provide acceptable security, but it only protects against unauthorized incoming downloads. You can activate the WinXP firewall from Start, Settings, Control Panel, Windows Firewall and verify at Start, Settings, Control Panel, Security Center. Make certain the Security Center reports Firewall ON.
The third party products, even the free ones, can provide "outgoing" firewall protection, so that any programs already on your computer would need your permission before they could "phone home". The third party firewalls are slightly more complex, and have an early learning period, during which they remember which programs you will allow to talk to the outside world. Whether you want to accept the extra complexity to receive the extra protection is your choice.
The free Comodo Firewall is here:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Another Third party firewall, available in both free and paid versions:
Sunbelt-Kerio firewall : http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio-Download.cfm

Good Luck. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks askey your a superstar.

I'll do as suggested now and make sure I don't get infected again.

As for a firewall I sit behind a Netgear router with built-in firewall. Would this be enough to protect me ?

Thanks again for your help, no more pop-ups I'm more than happy.

RifRaf,
You are quite well protected from incoming with the Windows firewall and the Router.
You are not well protected against a downloaded app phoning home.
Either the Comodo free or the Kerio pay version would fix that issue.

Thanks and good luck with it.
