Firstly, I have some bad news, your computer has been infected by a backdoor trojan. This program has the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you are using your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

• Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
• Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
• Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you do decide to reformat then please let me know in your next response.

Before we begin cleaning, please download and install HijackThis version 1.991, the version you have is still a beta (testing) version and at this time is unproven, so we need to use the latest full release:

Download the latest HJTsetup.exe from this link:
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTsetup.exe

Once it has downloaded, please remove HijackThis v2.0 Beta by deleting HiJackThis_v2.exe from your desktop.

Double-click on HJTsetup.exe to start installation
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis
Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you are asked which additional icons you would like
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Press Install and then Finish and it will automatically launch HijackThis

Now in HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the uninstall list along with a new HijackThis log.

The backdoor trojan program on your machine has the filename svchhhost.exe, I don't know how it arrived on your machine but it could have come with a bad codec program you have installed named eMedia Codec 4.0.

Roboform is a trustworthy program and not a threat, however it's worth keeping in mind that malware can be attached to good programs and then made available for download, so files you obtain from an untrustworthy source (unknown websites, peer-to-peer file sharing, etc) could infect your machine.

Digital signatures and file checksums are ways to check the legitimacy of downloaded software, but there is no substitute for checking that software you intend to install is reputable and that the source is trusted.

Now, please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs:
BSPlayer
eMedia Codec 4.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

BSPlayer is adware, free alternatives are VLC Player or Media Player Classic
eMedia Codec is a trojan application and does not provide any useful functionality
The old Java versions are now a security risk and need to be removed.

Also consider these uninstalls:

You have LiveUpdate 2.7 and Symantec Network Driver Update installed. Normally these programs work alongside Symantec security products, but I can't see any such programs installed. They may be there from a previous installation. If they are not necessary you can remove them.

You have Logitech Desktop Messenger installed on your system. This is a background process which can access the internet without your knowledge or consent. Although it can assist in providing software updates for your Logitech hardware, it uses resources on your machine and the fact that it accesses the internet without your approval is potentially dangerous. I recommend you remove this program, to do so, find Logitech Desktop Messenger and select Remove

You have Azureus, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:

• Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open
• Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
• Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
• Close Windows Defender

Temporarily disable Spy Sweeper

• Open Spysweeper and click on Options->Program Options and uncheck Load at Windows Startup
• On the left side click Shields and then uncheck everything there
• Uncheck Home Page Shield
• Uncheck Automatically restore default without notification
• Exit the program

Temporarily disable Ad-Aware Ad-Watch
Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray
At the bottom of the screen, uncheck both Active... and Automatic...

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):

Do you know if you or the person who looks after your computer has placed restrictions on changes to Internet Explorer settings? These may have been put in place by protection software like Spybot S&D. If you think there is no reason for these restrictions or wish to remove them then also place a checkmark next to this line:

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Use Windows Explorer to delete the following folder (if present):
C:\Program Files\emedia codec

Then click Start-> Search
Choose All files and folders, and type svchhhost.exe in the filename box and under Look in: select Local Hard Drives
Then choose More advanced options, and ensure Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders and Search subfolders are all checked
Delete all occurrences of this file

Now reboot your computer normally.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:
  Select My Computer
  
• The program will start to scan your system.
• Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log and let me know how you got on with the instructions.

Thanks for that, i cant beleive thats its down to the codec pack, i got that from a friend, lol. Had it about 3 years!!

I think the best thing to do is to wipe the thing clean re-install windows, thats seems the best bet, and probably will speed the PC up by removing old registry settings from lots of programs which are no longer used.

Reformatting will certainly resolve the problem, and taking some time to check out programs before installing them may help prevent something similar recurring in the future. One way to check programs and download sources is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

I recommend you take the time to read the article through, particularly the advice about protecting your unpatched computer until it is secured. I suggest you have offline copies of your protection software ready to install, and do not use the computer for anything until it is fully patched and protected.

Antivirus protection is essential, please ensure you have one operating at all times, do not however install more than one as they can conflict and cause system problems. Two popular and free packages are:

Firewall protection: XP's in-built firewall helps you by blocking inbound connections to your computer, but adding a software firewall will allow you to monitor and control outbound connections as well. I recommend these programs:

IESPYADS helps protect you from malicious websites by placing a list of known bad websites in Internet Explorer's Restricted Zone.
