My Hijackthis log does not show this file. The web site http://www.processlibrary.com claims it is a trojan file. Does anyone have any other site to look this up?
I found it in c:\windows\system32 directory\. If I delete it, it returns in a couple seconds. It shows up when I run "A-squareds Hijack free" scanner.
Here is part of the log. I will only post part of it because the rest looks clean. I checked file names on http://www.processlibrary.com/
I can probably remove it by booting to safe mode command prompt but I suspect some DLL will just respawn it after I reboot. Plus I am not altogether sure its not a required process file.

Thank you for your help

Conclusions??

Unread postby Rondil » April 30th, 2007, 11:23 pm

I found the following information doing web searches. What I think is happening is that shmgrate.exe by itself is not an issue. However the trojan Backdoor.Gaster which uses the file name ibot4.exe uses this process to access the net therefore bypassing my filtering firewall. Since I can't find the file ibot4.exe on my PC I simply have an unneeded process running. However I am not sure of my conclusions. What do you guys think?

Code: Select all
shmgrate.exe
This is Windows NT User Data Migration Tool.
Used in startup to migrate your IE/Outlook settings (from Windows NT)
    to new W2K.

When Backdoor.Gaster is executed, it does the following:

   1. Copies itself as %System%\ibot4.exe.

Note: %System% is a variable. The Trojan locates the Windows installation folder (by default, this is C:\Windows\System32 or C:\WinntSystem32) and copies itself to that location.
   2. Adds the value:

      "Shmgrate.exe"="%Sysdir%\ibot4.exe"

      to the registry key:

      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

so that the Trojan runs when you start Windows.

Hello, sorry for the delay.

Shmgrate.exe is a valid Windows file that can also be part of the infection you already discovered. I have the file on my XP machines as well, so it's presence alone doesn't mean you are infected. If you don't have any other problems or signs of an infection, then I would leave it alone.

XP won't let you delete files from the system32 folder, so seeing it return after trying to delete it is normal behavior. If you have any doubts, you can upload the file to Virustotal.com and have the scanners there take a look.
