Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Right click here and click Save Target As. Save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file you saved to run it. It will ask you if you want to merge it with your registry. Click Yes and then Ok on the confirmation. You will have to reboot for this to take effect.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Download Pocket Killbox.
Unzip the files to a folder like c:\killbox\

Click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot.
In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed in the box below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field). MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!
After each one, click the red circle with a white cross in it.

Update

Unread postby overwhelmed » July 20th, 2005, 11:54 pm

I still think I have viruses because:
* Adaware found 6 critical objects which I quarantined
* Spybot is NOT working, I tried running it but it said something about "winnet.dll" missing.
* Even though I reset my homepage to http://www.yahoo.com, it still defaults to http://www.kidshealth.org, which by the way does not show in the HJT log
* I have this DotcomToolbar that I am unable to remove using "ADD/REMOVE programs"
FINALLY, I CAN"T run PANDA online virus scan to see if I still have Smithfraud or not, the scan just sits there.

Ok clean out your quarantine folder and the do the following we will fix this step by step

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
since smitrem is changed since you downloaded it, please download the version which is now available

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:[list=1]
[*]Restart your computer
[*]After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
[*]Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
[*]Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log here, together with a new hijack this log.

Re: Wininet.dll file

Unread postby Perculator » July 27th, 2005, 3:02 pm

Download FixO by Miekiemoes and unzip it.
Make sure all the files remain in the unzipped folder.
Click FixO.bat and run it.
When it's finished, press a button and notepad will open with some txt in it.
Copy and paste the content of it in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Please go here: Jotti Virus Scan

Click the "browse" button and locate this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininet.dll

Click "Open", then click the "Submit" button. Copy the results and paste them here.

Please download FileFind from Atribune.
Unzip the file and save it to your desktop.

To run FileFind, please do the following:
  • Click on FileFind.exe
  • In the box labeled "Enter the directory to search"
    • Enter Drive eg.. C:\
  • In the box labeled "Enter wininet.dll
    "
    • Enter the file or use *.(file extention) to search for the file(s)
  • Now click on the "Find" button
  • Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
  • This will save a text file to your C:\ drive as "Export.txt"
  • Double click on Export.txt, copy and paste this information in your next post

please open Start> Run and type MSConfig in the 'Run' box. When the System Configuration Utility opens, go to the 'Startup Tab' and make sure there is a checkmark beside each entry. Then the general tab should have the "normal startup" option checked. REBOOT when asked to by Windows to complete the change

After completing the above please Please Scan again with HJT and POST a new HJT log, together with the outcome of FixO, the outcome of filefind and the outcome of jotti

Good Luck

    *Restart the computer.
    *as soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    *Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    *press Enter.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View Tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
    * Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Normally if you don’t have a wininet.dll it would be replaced by the one from the dllcach, but because that didn’t happen, I expect that file is also infected.

So we are going to copy the dll from another place

copy it from
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\wininet.dll

Copy it to
C:\WINDOWS\system32

when you did that.

Restart your computer in normal mode

· Click on FileFind.exe
· In the box labeled "Enter the directory to search"
o Enter Drive eg.. C:\

· In the box labeled "Enter wininet.dll
"
o Enter the file or use *.(file extention) to search for the file(s)

· Now click on the "Find" button
· Once the utility has found the files click on "Export"
· This will save a text file to your C:\ drive as "Export.txt"
· Double click on Export.txt, copy and paste this information in your next post

Please go here: Jotti Virus Scan

Click the "browse" button and locate this file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wininet.dll

Click "Open", then click the "Submit" button. Copy the results and paste them here.

We need to know if that file is clean, that's why we do this.

Please scan the following files in the same way and post the answers also
C:\Program Files\InterVideo\WinDVD\WININET.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\wininet.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dllcache\WININET.DLL
