Can't run Hijackthis/regedit/msconfig, weird problems....

Unread postby chezdez » April 26th, 2007, 2:24 am

Hi guys,
I origianally posted this on pcadvisor, but it was suggested I bring it here, so here goes!

Firstly, I'm running a 2600+ Athlon on an A7V8X-X mobo, geforce 4 4200ti, 1GB RAM, 200GB Seagate HDD, (it was top of the line 4 years ago!!) with windows XP, fully legal and updated. I run spybot, Adaware, and spywareblaster on a weekly basis, and am running AVG. I sit behind a router, so haven't bothered with a software firewall.

OK, so, AVG tells me today that there are infected hosts files. OK, so I go have a look in the folder, 5 files in there, but properties says 7. Hmmm, weird, I'm not hiding hidden files either.

A quick browse on the Internet shows up a couple of registry keys that may be causing a problem, so I try and open regedit and see if I've got these keys, before I spend some major hours looking into something that doesn't exist. But regedit doesn't want to stay open for more than 2 seconds.

OK, back to google. launching from a bat file may work? Nope. I noticed a couple of people mentioning dodgy startup files, so I try to check msconfig. That doesn't wanna stay open either.

At this point I’m getting out of my depth, so I decide to download hijack this, and then post a log here. I type hijack this into Google, click the top link, and Firefox closes. Weird. So I try IE, that does the same. Try it through Download.com, and it’s just plain refusing to redirect to the download site!! When I try to get a torrent up, the webpage just crashes out.

That's the origianl post.

Since then, I have managed to get hijack this installed via a link directly to the .exe, but when I run it, it also closes down in 2 seconds, so I can't get a report.

Can anyone help here??

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi

You could try to rename HijackThis.exe -> scanner.exe and see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, I cannot open the directory long enough in explorer to get it renamed, and when I try to do it with the command prompt, it says that system cannot find the specified file.

Interesting. I just tried don't downloading AVG anti-spyware, but the connection timed out. So I tried pinging it, and it resolved to 1.1.1.1. I'm guessing this is courtesy of my virus host files?

Ah well, couldn't stop me from just entering the IP address of grisoft into the address bar :D

Could you try to get hjt log in safe mode? Rename .exe before running hjt.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies, sorry it's taken so long to get back to you, I've been pretty busy and it's not really affected the way the systems running, so it's not been a big problem.

Anyway, booted into safemode last night, and got this log. I know the hosts are the virus hosts that started all this, and I've already reset them with a program that I cannot for the life of me remember the name of. Unfortunately, they came straight back next I rebooted.

I can't see anything wrong in the log apart from the hosts, but feel free to correct me!!!

Thanks a lot :D

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop. (If you can't download with this computer try to get it downloaded on some other one.)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press
    Enter
    .
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, double click the SDFix.exe file. Click Install in appearing window,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
    a new HijackThis log

Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean :) Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
  5. Under the
    Hidden files
    folder, select
    Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Check
    Hide protected operating system files.
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
    kill bits
in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here

  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the
    bad
webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    1. Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    2. Click run
    3. In the dialog box, type services.msc
    4. hit enter, then locate dns client
    5. Highlight it, then double-click it.
    6. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    7. Click ok

  • Keep Anti Virus Software updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system... problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade
