annoying popups

Hi,
I keep getting annoying popups similar to those other people have reported: Casale media, winantivirus, yourdebts etc. I have tried running vundofix and it claimed there were no infected files, as did my other malware scanning problems. can you help me?

Thank you. Also it may help you to know I am not very computer literate!

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed.

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Also do whatever else that seems appropriate.

If you decide to reformat you should check that you have all the necessary information and software.

If you decide to continue with a cleanup you should not use this computer for financial or other sensitive transaction.

Let me know what you want to do.

The only things I use the internet for is very very infrequent internet banking checks but since I am a student I have no money to steal (I can guarantee any attemts to steal off me would bounce) and none of my credit limits can be changed without me going into my bank branch. I have nonetheless changed my passwords.

I have a query - I suspected I had a backdoor trojan as I ran a windows livecare scan which claimed it had found and removed this threat - why didn't it actually remove it?

I have also created the HJT folder on my desktop and put hijackthis.exe in it.
I do want to continue to clean up my computer - what do I do next?

I'm happy to help you try and clean this machine up as long as you have taken on board my warning.

I suspected I had a backdoor trojan as I ran a windows livecare scan which claimed it had found and removed this threat - why didn't it actually remove it?

malware can be very devious, sometimes hiding from a\v scans and in some cases turning off such programs

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
