probs

Unread postby bribot » April 18th, 2007, 4:02 am

well, i noticed i had in c:\windows\sytem32
the file ipv6monl.dll
and in c:\programfiles\mozilla
js3250.dll was getting deleted so i couldnt run firefox

so i dl'ed various suggested freeware, and also deleted ipv6monl.dll in safe mode

since then ive been able to run firefox.exe without a problem. however, after running spybot/ad aware etc and rebooting, programs like coolsearch, hotbar, webdialer were reinstalled after cleaning.

Should i reboot and post another hijack this log? i just want to make sure my computer is clean before taking further security measures. thanks

Now that your topic has had a reply the normal helpers will NOT see it as they will consider that someone else is help[ing you - so I am afraid joeyakaspce did you a dis-service as it will probably slow down normal assistance.

I will post to a helpers room asking for one to take this topic over.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
If you truly had c:\windows\sytem32/ ipv6monl.dll It is a back door trojan!!!!

Reported by sophos
here and here
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.
More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here

I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.

can't use kaspersky

Unread postby bribot » April 19th, 2007, 12:50 am

Thank you for the reply.

I was not able to run Kaspersky's Online Virus Scan. I visited http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner but for some reason cannot load the Accept/Decline page using Internet Explorer 7. I can click the grey icon but nothing happens.

I followed the link you provided regarding Troj/Cimuz-AX.
Before I posted the first Hijack This log, Ad Aware identified
Win32/Spy.BZub, along with two other TAC 10 entries, on my PC, which i Deleted.
I regret not having written down or quarantined these files for reference purposes, sorry.

Below, I've provided the AVG scan, which was clean, and second HJT log.

Your help is most appreciated.

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste these filepaths: 1 at a time.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_0o.dll

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • Check that Active Scripting is set to Enabled
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Open a new IE window and try to run the online scan.

Please retry Kasperskys now. If that doesn't work let's try the following scan.

I followed the instructions to the best of my ability.
After disabling TeaTimer, I completed the following instructions

quote:
______________________________
HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\bmchatto\LOCALS~1\Temp\200741718217_mcinfo.exe /insfin
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_0o.dll

__________________________

HTJ gave me the following response after I choose Fix Checked

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win_0o.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 7.0.5730.11
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

After which, I examined c:\documents and setting\bmchatto\local settings\temp and there was no file or folder 200741718217_mcinfo.exe
(i had followed instructions to reveal hidden files/folders)

C:\windows\system32\win_0o.dll was also no longer present, so i could not submit it to Jotti

I was able to run kasperskys

below are the latest HJT & kaspersky

Your logs are looking clean now.

You need to update SunJava for security reasons.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1... allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

A few optionals to consider.

______________________________
You have iTunesHelper.exe running at Startup. iTunesHelper.exe is a process belonging to Itunes MP3 streaming tool
by Apple which allows you to play MP3's. This process speeds up iTunes when it starts, and the program also monitors
for connected iPod devices. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it.
It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize

You have NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize running at Startup. This is a video card tweak. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize

profuse thanks, everything seems fine.

if i may trouble you with another question, i have limited systems resources, are any of these programs redundant? startup is a bit slow with zonealarm, avg, and teatimer loading. but afterwards i don't notice slow performance.
i reviewed the "how i got infected in the first place" thread suggestions.
so i'm using, avg, spybot + teatimer, ad aware, zone alarm, MVPS HOSTS and spyblaster.

one other question, should i review zone alarms logs to identify possible probes considering my computer was recently compromised. any advice in regards to general use?

As I don't know the specs of your system some programs use a bit of memory..
avg can be hard on older systems.. Some programs just take a bit to load ..As long as everything seems to run fine after that you should be OK.

Nothing I see is redundant or overkill.

Question; Do you have Zone Alarm security suite ? Is that your anti virus ?

Yup thats an oldtimer for sure... If it's just boot up times that are slow I would just live with it on that machine.

That being the case you DO NOT have an anti virus program running. AVG antimalware is not an anti virus..

I see no signs of an anti virus program.. I suggest you get one in asap.
I will list 2 free anti virus programs just choose 1.

AVG FREE

Avast

Download and install one of these.
