Good morning.

I think that you may have something that's hiding from HijackThis. To fool the 'nasty' into letting us see the complete picture, we need to rename HijackThis.exe. Use Windows Explorer and navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\ and rename HijackThis.exe to ShowMe.exe. Please then open it, scan and post another log.

What problems have you got with your computer? Please gives as much detail as possible.

Hi.

We need to temporarily disable Spybot S&D 'TeaTimer' as it may interfere with the fix. Please do the following:
  • Right-click the Spybot icon in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools then Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Reboot the computer
Do not re-enable TeaTimer until we have finished.

----------------------------------------------------------------

VundoFix

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • It will create a report named vundofix.txt on your main drive (C:\vundofix.txt)
Note: It is possible that VundoFix may encounter a file it cannot remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot Simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The VundoFix report (C:\vundofix.txt)
  • A new HijackThis log (showme.exe)

Hi.

VundoFix didn't remove the files. Please could you re-run it. Make sure that all windows are closed and do not use the computer while VundoFix is running.

Please post the VundoFix report and a new HijackThis log.

Good morning.

Well done - it worked that time! :) It probably wasn't your fault last time, it just happens sometimes. That's got rid of a lot of the 'nasties'. We now need to get rid of the rest. You have a line in the HJT log which shows eTech, Ohio as a proxy server. Is this correct?

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FB426006-6BAF-40F8-ACB9-6B5A8B2E82C3} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnmk.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {74DD705D-6834-439C-A735-A6DBE2677452} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Services] C:\WINDOWS\System32\svmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SoundService] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxuyhelf.dll",setvm

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

HijackThis may not remove all of the files relating to the fixed items. We therefore need to check this and delete them if necessary. First we need to make sure that you can see all of the files.
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View tab
  • Advanced Settings:
    • Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files and folders
    • Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
    • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • Click Apply to All Folders
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK
------------------------------------------------------------

ATF Cleaner by Atribune ©

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
----------------------------------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Delete Files

Click on Start then My Computer, find the following files and folders (highlighted in red) and delete them, if present. Don't worry if any are missing, but please let me know..
  • C:\Documents and settings\Administrator\Application Data\SearchToolbarCorp\ <-- Folder
  • C:\WINDOWS\System32\svmp.exe <-- File only
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxuyhelf.dll <-- File only
-----------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in Normal Mode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log
  • The answer to my question about eTech, Ohio
Please also let me know how your computer is running now.

Hi Beynac,
Thanks for the help,
Computer still runs a little slow, but now working fine. No messages or pop ups. The mouse still has a mind of its own.

eTech Ohio is a proxy server my daughter uses to access USA web sites like ABC, NBC to watch TV programs.
I use a UK one to access The BBC to watch live sport on the internet which is restricted to UK IP addresses. It's a pain finding one some times.

Here are the two reports. Hows the weather in Norwich?

Good morning rpm.

It's another cold, dry, sunny day in Norwich. :)

Computer still runs a little slow, but now working fine. No messages or pop ups. The mouse still has a mind of its own.

I'm glad that we've stopped the messages/popups but I'm a bit worried about the mouse, although I don't think that it's malware-related. Could you please explain a bit more about its behaviour. Have you tried another mouse on the computer? Is it an optical mouse? If so, have you tried a different mouse mat?

The AVG Anti-Spyware report is clean. It found the Vundo infection in your System Restore points, which we'll clear in a moment, and in the VundoFix backup directory. I think that we can tidy up now, although we won't close this down yet as I want to make sure that your mouse problem is not malware-related. You can delete VundoFix form your desktop, together with its report (C:\vundofix.txt) and the backup folder (C:\VundoFix Backups\). I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware as they are useful programs.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6u1.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
-----------------------------------------------------------

Flush System Restore

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
This will create a new, clean restore point.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Please let me know the answers to my questions about your mouse and post a new HijackThis log (just to be safe).

Hi.

The mouse is optical. It sometimes goes to start, file or close top right.

That sounds as if it's trying to be clever! I suggest that you check the mouse settings in Control Panel. It would also be worth trying a different mouse. I don't know of any malware that would have that effect.

We can tidy up now. Please delete VundoFix and its report (C:\vundofix.txt). I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware as they are useful programs. You have a good level of protection on your computer. If you do not already use it, I suggest that you install SpywareBlaster. This program will:
  • Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
This program blocks these items but does not run in the background. It therefore does not use any resources.

I would also recommend that you have a look at Firetrust SiteHound. This gives warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. An alternative is McAfee SiteAdvisor. I use SiteHound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Good morning.

I've been reviewing what we've done and feel that it would be wise to run an online scan to make sure that there are no remnants of the infection left on your computer.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as... button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Please post the Kaspersky report as a reply to this thread.

Hi.

It's a good job that we checked. One of the Vundo files didn't get deleted. Sorry about that - I didn't spot it in the VundoFix report. I would like to run VundoFix again to make sure that we get everything. Obviously, as I asked you to delete it, you will have to download it again!

Please post the VundoFix report (C:\vundofix.txt) and a new HijackThis log.
