Security programs are not starting up

Unread postby Sb23 » March 22nd, 2007, 4:38 am

It would appear that for the last 10 days or so, I have been running the pc without security. The pc was on selective startup, and when I realised this tried to put it back to normal, but the programs will still not startup. I was advised to come here and post a log to see if anyone can offer any suggestions.

Hi Sb23.

I've looked through your log and there's nothing showing that would cause the symptons you mention. Before we go any further, I would like to check for the infection I mentioned on the PC Advisor forum.

Please download FindAWF from: http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/FindAWF.exe and save it on your desktop. Double-click on the file to run it. It will produce a report (awf.txt). Please post that report as a reply to this thread.

Note: If a DOS window does not stay open throughout the search (approx a minute), you need to change how the program runs:
  1. Locate the file
  2. Right-click and select Properties
  3. Select Compatibility and select Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 98/Windows ME and click OK.
  4. The tool should now work.
Let me know if you have any problems.

Hi Sb23.

Well that's a relief! :) Now that we've eliminated that, we can start investigating further. You say that your security programs will not start up. The following programs appear in the running processes:
  • Windows Defender
  • SpywareGuard
  • Avast
  • ZoneAlarm
You also appear to have SuperAntiSpyware installed but it doesn't appear in the running process list.

Could you please clarify what isn't working. You mentioned the Eicar test in your thread on PCA - how did you check this? Are the programs not working at all, or is it just parts of them? Please give as much detail as possible.

  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,

  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine

  • If it finds anything, do not rename any. Legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight
Please post the contents of the log as a reply to this thread.

------------------------------------------------------------------

please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log
  • The Blacklight scan log
  • The answer to my questions regarding your security programs.

The Eicar Test Virus I downloaded to my documents in a zip file when I realised that something was up. When opened Avasts alarms go off, and Defender notes that there is something trying to get access, but this time as I said on the PCA forum nothing happened.
ZA has just started reacting, and SpywareGuard seems to be working now.

I would like to see an AVG Anti-Spyware report. Please install and run it as below. You can uninstall it again once we have sorted out your problem.

AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Under Resident shield is... make sure that this shows as inactive or not available in the free version.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in Normal Mode.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Please post the AVG Anti-Spyware report.

Hi Steve.

It's looking hopeful that it is not malware causing your problem. There's a couple of things we need to tidy up on your HijackThis log. Before we do this, we need to disable your real-time anti-spyware programs as they can interfere with the fix. While they are disabled, I would like you to try the Eicar test again and see if Avast picks it up. Please could you check the settings in Avast's control panel. HijackThis says that the program is running. I want to make sure that it's not just switched off real-time protection.

Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => General Settings
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
SpywareGuard:
  • Right-click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Go to Menu -> File and choose Exit.
  • It will automatically restart at next boot.
Please make sure that SuperAntiSpyware is still not running. If it is, please disable it.

---------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Please try the Eicar test and then reboot the computer.

--------------------------------------------------

Please re-activate Windows Defender and try the Eicar test again.

--------------------------------------------------

Download WinPFind2.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind2 on your desktop. This program will enable me to see more of what is happening on your computer.
  • Open the WinPFind2 folder and double-click on winpfind2.exe to start the program.
  • Keep the standard settings.
  • In the AddOn Options group (on the right-hand side) click the checkboxes for:
    • Jobs.def
    • Policies.def
    • SID_Run_Policies.def
  • Now click the Run All Scans button on the toolbar.
  • When the scans are complete click the Simple Report button in the lower right-hand corner to create a report file. Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Copy the report and paste it as a reply to this thread.

----------------------------------------------------

Please post the following (you may need to split this into two, or more posts):
  • The WinPFind2 report
  • A new HijackThis log
Please also let me know the results of the Eicar tests.

Beynac, sorry if the reports are too close, but in answer to your other question, Windows Defender now will not let me download the Eicar Test Virus without warning me (in bright red colours), and Avast seems to be working again.

But I will tell you aswell, while I was offline I reinstalled the previous version of ZA, as a hunch suggested that the newer version was causing the problems aswell as. I've done exactly as you suggested and it all seems to be working again.

What caused these problems, is it possible that it was ZA (well the newer version).

Hi Steve.

It looks as if it was ZoneAlarm. There is nothing that we've done that would have made any difference (all of the scans came up clean). Someone on the PCA forum suggested it could be the ZA updates that may have caused the problem. The main thing is that everything is working again. I'm sorry if I worried you with my suggestion that it could be something more serious, but the signs were there. At least you've had a good 'health check'. :)

There are a couple of other things that I would like to tidy up. Part of the HijackThis fix didn't work and your Java is out-of-date.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
---------------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

We need to try the HijackThis fix in Safe Mode.

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing, but please let me know):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

----------------------------------------------------

Reboot the computer normally and post a new HijackThis log, please.

in safe mode those 2 lines are not there

That's strange! Could you try again in normal mode please.

Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => General Settings
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
SpywareGuard:
  • Right-click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Go to Menu -> File and choose Exit.
  • It will automatically restart at next boot.
Please make sure that SuperAntiSpyware is still not running. If it is, please disable it.

---------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

Reboot the computer.

Please let me whether this works.
