HijackThis log for Aurora spyware

Unread postby Kennethken » July 13th, 2005, 11:12 am

Hello,
I hope you can help me get the dreaded Aurora/ABI software off of my system. I contracted it 2 days ago and have downloaded some tools to help me.

I have Windows XPPro w/ Norton Systemworks 2005 (up-to-date virus definitions) and have run NAV, Ad-Aware, Sypbot-S&D, MS AntiSpyware Beta, Ewido, HiJack this from normal mode. Below are the HijackThis log (first) and the Ewido scan log (from Safe Mode).

Thanks
Ken

Register to Remove

Unread postby 'KotaGuy » July 13th, 2005, 3:14 pm

Hi Ken. I'm 'KotaGuy. Welcome to Malware Removal!

Download and install CCleaner. Don't run it yet.

Download Nailfix. Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to an Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Run and scan with HijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
O2 - BHO: Band Class - {01F44A8A-8C97-4325-A378-76E68DC4AB2E} - C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F79A2C4B-8776-4ED7-8B2F-4786A4A3500A} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Server Updt] C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [khvwdru] c:\windows\system32\pdjjjc.exe r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Iw77RiYmP] grptcpip.exe

Note: this 04 entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [khvwdru] c:\windows\system32\pdjjjc.exe r

May mutate on you when you reboot. If this line isn't in HJT, look for one similar to it... weirdly named file with an "r" after the "exe". You will want to fix that line. If it has mutated, take note of the file name... write it down if need be. Don't include the "r" after the "exe".

Search for and delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdjjjc.exe
grptcpip.exe

Note: Again... this file, C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdjjjc.exe, may have mutated on you, if it did, use the file name you wrote down.

Browse to your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files in the folder, do not delete the folder itself. Empty your Recycle Bin. Run CCleaner.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Here are the revised logs

Unread postby Kennethken » July 13th, 2005, 5:07 pm

Hi KotaGuy,

Thanks for helping out. I followed your instructions and below are the revised log files. Please note: I wasn't sure when you wanted me to generate the new HJT log - during the first scan, after the fix, before rebooting in normal mode or after. I made an executive decision (not a wrong one I hope) to generate the HJT log as the last thing before leaving Safe Mode. I hope this helps.

Good work! Log is clean! :D

I am curious about this one though....

Know what it is? If not, you can fix that line with HJT.

How is the computer behaving?

I dunno

I'm not sure what that is. I haven't gotten any popups since following your instructions. Should I have HJT fix it (in Safe Mode?)?

You can fix it... doesn't have to be in safe mode. Reboot when done.

Seeing as how your log is clean...

To take care of anything that may have been left behind, I suggest doing a couple online virus scans. A couple good ones are Panda ActiveScan and TrendMicro HouseCall. Let them fix anything they find. Reboot between each scan.

If you don't have them, download Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. Visit this page for proper configuration of Spybot and Ad-Aware. Run and scan with both, letting them fix whatever they find. Remember to reboot between each scan.

Now that your computer is clean, its a good time to reset your System Restore point. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if you ever need it. To do this:
  • Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

I recommend downloading and installing SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD as well. The programs are free and can be updated... so please do so. Installing these will go a long way in preventing reinfection.

If you don't have one, I recommend installing a Firewall. I'm sure you've heard of ZoneAlarm.

Check out these links How'd I get Infected and Understanding Spyware as well, some good information for you.

Other than that, remember to update Windows frequently, update your protection programs, scan often and...

Last cleanup and preventative measures

Unread postby Kennethken » July 13th, 2005, 11:08 pm

Thanks again for your help KotaGuy. Your instructions were clear and it appears that the issue hass been resolve.

A couple more questions though. I've followed the suggestions in your last post and am about to download and install the final three spyware programs you reccommened.

Should I keep MS AnitSpyware Beta running on my machine?

Between MS-ASW Beta, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, IE-SpyAd and AOL's spyware protection I'd have SEVEN programs resident (plus NAV, of course). Can they all coexist? Will they all slow my computer to a crawl?

You forgot one.... Ewido! :D

That is only a trial though... probably should uninstall it.

Using all the programs is a good idea. Some will catch things the others don't. Or protect your computer in a different way.

IE-SPYAD and SpywareBlaster don't have active processes. So those you don't have to worry about.

These ones will/can have active monitors.... AOL, MSAS, Ewido, Ad-Aware, Spybot, SpywareGuard.

The AV programs(Norton and Ewido) may conflict if you have both thier monitors active.

The Spyware programs are basically the same... if you have more than one monitor running at a time... it may cause conflicts. Each one will also warn you about changes to the system, so you spend a lot of time closing warning popups about the same thing.

You can have all the programs installed, but you really only need to have one AV monitor and one Spyware monitor active.

Who's most likely gonna watch my back the best? MSAS? Spybot? or one of the others?

I'd go with either Spybot's TeaTimer or SpywareGuard. I like them better than Ad-Aware's AdWatch. MSAS is still a beta. And I don't know anything about the AOL Service.
