IE Browser has slowed down horribly

Unread postby BayBee » March 5th, 2007, 8:23 pm

Along with opening of e-mail programs. I use Firefox as well and that is a tad bit quicker than IE, but not by much. I have been quite careful about downloads and strange e-mails and I keep many of the spyware progams on my machine, updated and ran regularly, yet, here I sit with a slow running newer machine. I have tried running and re-running many of the programs, to no avail. I do this type of thing for a living, I am embarrassed to say that I may have become a victim to what I tell folks to watch out for! I just can seem to figure out what I have going on? I am hoping someone can see what my old eyes can't. I hate seeing and hearing my HD grinding away so hard each time I try and open something!

Here is my HJT log - Any insite would be greatly appreciated...

Hi BayBee,

My name is silver and I'm currently looking over your log.

As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator so there could be a small delay between posts, we appreciate your patience. I'll be back with some instructions shortly.

Hi BayBee,

As I'm sure you know, malware infection is just one of many reasons for a slow computer, and if it turns out you are infected I wouldn't be embarrassed, the bad guys are very smart so unfortunately anyone can be infected.

First please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Once complete, please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.

Here are the reports you asked for

Unread postby BayBee » March 6th, 2007, 1:36 am

Vundo did not ask for a reboot and it said there were no files to fix.

VundoFix V6.3.12

Checking Java version...

Java version is 1.5.0.6
Old versions of java are exploitable and should be removed.

Scan started at 9:59:35 PM 3/5/2007

Listing files found while scanning....

No infected files were found.

Beginning removal...

Hi BayBee,

You probably noticed that you have malware in your Incredimail junk mailbox, I can see no sign of it having been executed/installed so I'd simply suggest you empty your junk and trash email folders.

Otherwise your system doesn't look too bad, so next we'll clean with HijackThis and do another couple of scans to see if anything turns up.

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to the following lines:
O16 - DPF: {B991DA79-51F7-4011-98D2-1F2592E82A56} (ACNPlayer2 Class) - http://drm1.reelsurvey.com/ePlayer/V3_2 ... Player.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddabx - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabx.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked and close HijackThis

Make your hidden/system files visible as follows:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Now use Windows Explorer to navigate to and delete (if present) the following file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabx.dll
If the file isn't present or you cannot delete it, please let me know in your next response.

Download Silentrunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip

Unzip it to the desktop then double-click on Silent Runners.vbs to start the program. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
Say Yes to skip the supplementary scan.
A logfile called Startup Programs... will appear on your desktop, wait for the message box telling you the scan is complete before opening it, and post a copy with your next reply.

Next, please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
- Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
- Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
- It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
- The log will have a list of all items found.
- Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
- Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Once complete please post the Silent Runners and Blacklight logs along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi BayBee,

The good news is that all your scans are clean and there doesn't appear to be any malware on your system. Of course the bad news is that this hasn't helped you with the problems you are experiencing, but I have some important information and then some recommendations which may help:

First, reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(It should have this icon next to it: Image)
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java.
Repeat to remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ‘spyware’, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it ‘unsolicited’, and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly ‘commercial’. So it does meet the definition for ‘parasite’: unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

I recommend that you uninstall WeatherBug and choose one of these free alternatives:
Weather Pulse
Weather Watcher
or use Mozilla Firefox and then get ForecastFox

To uninstall WeatherBug:
Navigate to Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
Look down the list for Weatherbug and click Remove

You have plenty of protection software installed, however please keep in mind that too much real-time protection can cause conflicts and degrade system performance - such as two anti-virus programs with active protection enabled or two firewalls active at the same time.

I am not intimately familiar with SpySubtract, but I believe it covers some of the same ground as MS Windows Defender. I recommend you consider whether having both installed is required. Also, check that if your Symantec package has a firewall component, it is not active at the same time as Zone Alarm.

With regard to performance, a good place to start is by examining activity on the system and eliminating applications. I'd recommend using a monitoring tool like Process Explorer to keep an eye on activity, and then try temporarily uninstalling resource-hungry applications to check for improvement. Sometimes it isn't a bad application, it is conflict between two good applications which causes performance problems.

However, you sound like a fairly advanced user and this may not be news to you, if so then you could try somewhere like PC Pitstop which specializes in dealing with performance issues.

In any case, please read this article which contains excellent information on how to stay safe on the internet which I hope you'll find useful:
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=33687

Please post back to let me know how you got on and if there are any further issues.

silver,

Thanks for the great assistance! I will give your suggestions a try as soon as I get home and have access to my system. I had considered Weather Bug being a nuisance, I have become quite dependant on it so I greatly appreciate the alternate options you provided. I will get things going and post back in a few days as to how things are working. Again, thanks for your patience and assistance with my problem.
