Hi evildave567,

My name is silver and I'm currently looking over your log.

As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator so there could be a small delay between posts, we appreciate your patience.

I'll be back with some instructions shortly, in the meantime could you please tell me what sort of problems you have been experiencing?

I hope I did this right...

Sorry I never did forums or whatever this is called so I'm a little new to this so if I do anything wrong, please correct me accordingly. Anyways, one problem I face is that I went through about 10 different virus, trojan, anti-spyware and anti-malware programs, each showing me different issues the others couldn't find. But the problem is, none of them can show why I'm still getting the popups that usually start with the "~" symbol. I do financial transactions on this PC and I'm worried that this information might get stolen despite my Mcafee Firewall. Also some of my windows I have up tend to crash randomly without giving me the chance to save my work which is really fustrating because I'm one to forget to save every so often but I think that's just me installing BIOS's and drivers wrong but that's just an assumption and might need some precautions.

Forgot to mention..

Oh and you might need to know this or not.....my PC is a Athlon 64 3000+ with a gig of ram with intergrated graphics and plenty of harddrive space, and when I first built and ran this machine, it ran perfectly. But after I connected to the internet, my pc has slowed to an aching level with most apps taking almost 5 minutes to start instead of the usual 10 seconds. I installed Mcafee before I connected though so I can't see the problem.

Hi evildave567,

Thanks for the information.
I can't see much wrong with your log, but that doesn't mean the computer is clean so we'll have a closer look.

First open HijackThis, press the Config button, click on Misc Tools and then press Open Uninstall Manager
Select Save list... and save the Uninstall log to your Desktop, include a copy of this in your next response.

Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner:

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Once complete, please post the uninstall list, the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log along with a description of the symptoms you are experiencing.

New Stuff

Unread postby evildave567 » March 6th, 2007, 7:45 am

Symptons: Random ads popping up despite me turning the blocker to strict. Example: newgrounds and kontraband.com results in ~videoz (adult popup) popups. Other sites give me the infamous ~ed.net popup. I did scan my PC and still no better. Plus some of my apps tend to crash on random.

Hi evildave567,

Thanks again for the information, that's just what we need.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe):
https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
- Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
- Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
- It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
- The log will have a list of all items found.
- Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.

Then exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi evildave567,

Please run Blacklight in exactly the same way as before, but when it shows the list of the items found, we want to rename the following entry:

tidkifaifr.exe

Do this by selecting the filename and pressing the Rename button.
The Action column should now change from None to Rename
Then press Next, OK the warning screen and then choose Restart now and OK again.
Your computer should now reboot.

If you have any problems with this step then please stop here and let me know.

Next download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
  • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
  • Click "Next"
  • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
  • Click "Browse"
  • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
  • Click on "Local Disk (C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
  • Click "Make New Folder"
  • Type in BFU
  • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download EGDACCESS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Copy the text in the code box below into notepad and save it with the filename aftermath.bfu
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU) and set Filetype to "All files"
Code: Select all
RegDeleteKey HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\tidkifaifr
RegDelValue HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run|tidkifaifr
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\tidkifaifr_navps.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\tidkifaifr_nav.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\tidkifaifr.dat
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\tidkifaifr.exe
FileDelete %SYSDIR%\tidkifaifr_m2s.xml
FileDelete %WINDIR%\tidkifaifr.exe-*.pf
FileDelete C:\Windows\system32\tidkifaifr.exe.ren
FileDelete C:\Windows\system32\temp\NSIS_Install_IGB.exe

Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
  • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Image and select EGDACCESS.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon Image again and this time select aftermath.bfu
  • Press Execute and let it do it’s job.
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Once complete, reboot once more and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi evildave567,
(By the way, thanks for helping me.)

No problem! :D

If everything went as per the instructions in my previous post then the malware should have been removed, however we will do couple further scans to confirm. How is your computer running?

Open Blacklight once more (blbeta.exe)
- Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
- Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
- It will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.
- The log will have a list of all items found.
- Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
- Exit Blacklight

Next, download, install, and update AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5
Download the installer from this page:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
- Save the installer to desktop
- Double click the installer, select your language, and then select OK
- Click NEXT->Do or don't read the "User License Agreement"
Select I Agree->NEXT->INSTALL
- AVG will now install and afterwards click FINISH
- Click the Update tab at the top. Under Manual Update click Start update.
- After the update finishes the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
- Close AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5. Do not run a scan yet.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode, please restart your computer. Tap F8 before Windows loads. Select Safe Mode at the top, on the screen that appears.
Sign in with your normal user account

Once in safe mode

- Then run AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 and click on the Scanner tab at the top
- Click the Settings tab and then change the recommended action to Quarantine and ensure that Automatically generate report after every scan is selected and Uncheck "Only if Threats are found"
- Click back to the Scan tab and then click on Complete System Scan.
- This scan can take quite a while to run, so be prepared.
-AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will list any infections found on the left hand side. When the scan has finished, it will automatically set the recommended action. Click the Apply all actions button. AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 will display All actions have been applied on the right hand side.
-Click on Save Report, then Save Report As. This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again (like on the Desktop).

Once complete, reboot your computer normally and post the Blacklight log (check that you are posting the latest one), the AVG Antispyware log and a new HJT log; and tell me how your computer is running.

Hi evildave567,

The scans look good so we just have a little tidying up to do:

First open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a check-mark next to this line:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
Then close all windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked then close HijackThis

Next we will Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
Right-click My Computer (from the desktop or Start Menu)
Click Properties and choose the System Restore tab
Check Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then Yes to confirm, you may need to wait a moment while Windows deletes old System Restore Points
Then, UN-Check Turn off System Restore
Click OK

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(It should have this icon next to it: Image)
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java.
Repeat to remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours. You can remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

You have good antivirus and firewall protection with your McAfee program, and in addition to it I recommend you use an antispyware application with real-time protection. You now have AVG Antispyware installed which is an excellent program, however the real-time protection is not free. I suggest you consider purchasing the full version, however if a free application is preferable then you could use Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

Ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date in the future by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

For your information, the malware we removed was of a very nasty type but it's main aim was advertising, not keylogging or data theft, so I know no reason for you to be concerned about your internet banking - however - right now is an excellent time to change all your important passwords and to review your internet security.

You should also know that this malware may have come bundled with a download from a site called internetgamebox_dot_com. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide which websites and programs are trustworthy, and sadly, the bad guys are working hard to make it more difficult all the time. I recommend you check out unknown websites and their downloads before trusting them, one way is to use a site like McAfee SiteAdvisor.

Please read this important information about how to stay safe in the future:

Well, that was a fun couple of days. :D I'm hoping I won't have to do this again, but if I do, I'll look for you because you were very very helpful. My PC seems to be back on it's feet and I'm currently installing various anti-spyware like you recommended. Thanks for all your help. Saynora.
