Switched computer on this morning and was told i had all these virus by it. Ran all the spyware you told me to, and the pop ups have gone and my home page is back to normal and the icons have been removed from the task bar. But when i run the scans again to make sure, some still come up. Black adware/win32 and when i ran windows defender it told me i still had Zlob and spydawn which i removed.

I have included logfile, i have only got basic computer skills and it took me a while to work out how to run the system scan so please be gentle

G'Day stacy and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems.

HijackThis logs can take a little time to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
I'm working through your log and will be back soon.

Thanks
Vino

Hi Stacey

OK, let's take each step one at a time. There may seem to be a lot to do but you will be OK if you follow my instructions.

Firstly, you have a P2P (peer-to-peer) networking program installed. Use of such programs is not recommended as the download of unknown files from unknown sources will lead to malware infections. Continued use of any P2P program is your choice but, while we are cleaning your computer, I ask that you do not use such programs and only download files or tools as in my instructions.
I recommend you remove LimeWire, IncrediMail, and Desktop Messenger via Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. I'm happy to discuss these programs further later.

Note: You should print out these instructions for reference as you will not have access to the internet during this fix.

1 - Temporarily Disable Windows Defender
Certain protection tools may get in the way of the fixes we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • UNcheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.
Remember to re-enable it after we have finished.

2 - Run HijackThis Scan and Fix
Start HijackThis and click Do a system scan only
Tick the following entries, if present:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html

Close all windows except HijackThis
Click Fix Checked in HijackThis.

3 - Clean Out Temporary Files
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from >here<
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • UNtick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
4 - Scan With AVG Anti-Spyware
Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from >here< and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open.
Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

5 - Boot to Safe Mode and Scan
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

6 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
  1. the AVG Anti-Spyware Scan report
  2. a new HijackThis log
  3. and a description of how your PC is behaving - what problems are you now experiencing?
Remember, if you can, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck

Well i did it.......the only thing i couldn't do was on the system scan i couldn't find 04 - HKCU\..\Run:[LDM] C:\Program Files\Logitech\DesktopMessenger\8876480\Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe it just wasn't there to tick. Computer seems to be running fine, but the yellow shield in the bottom right hand corner came up again when rebooting and didn't update anything, and it wouldn't let me click on it. It was only there for about 1 minute. Is it safe for me to do online banking on my computer?

Well here are my reports many thanks Stacey

Well done, stacey!

Let's do a few more checks/updates before you start using your computer for online banking.

1 - Update Java
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system.
  • Download the latest version of Java by clicking >here<.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove ALL older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove ALL Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Using Windows Explorer, go to: C:\Program Files\Java and, in the Java folder, delete any folders like jre1.5.0_0x, if present.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the latest version of Java.
2 - Kaspersky Online Scan
With the exception of your browser, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
3 - Upload Files To Jotti
I'd like to be certain about the content of a file. Do you recognise "Magentic" as a program on your computer?

Please visit this link http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Click the Browse... button
Navigate to the following file on your PC:
  • C:\Program Files\Magentic\bin\Magentic.exe
Click Open
Please reply back with the results from Jotti.

4 - Questions
  1. Is bigpond.net.au your Internet Service Provider?
  2. Is the yellow shield still is your system tray? Is it perhaps hidden? Try clicking on the blue circle with the white < to see if you can see the yellow shield. If it's is there, try left-clicking on it... are there updates to download?
5 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please provide (it seems a lot but it's not really :)):
  1. the Kaspersky Scan report
  2. the Jotti results
  3. confirmation of your ISP
  4. a new HijackThis log
  5. let me know about the yellow shield and a description of how your PC is behaving - are you experiencing any problems?
Thanks
Vino

OK will do that, yes my server is bigpond.net.au. Have checked the system tray and the yellow shield is not there. Did i have to put my Windows defender back on now or when we've finished finished. Do i leave all the settings for AVG as you set them, did i need to put the shield back on. If that make sense. Right off to do these reports for you.

Here goes info you needed;

Bigpond.net.au is my ISP

Yellow shield still comes up but does not download anything, but does disappears but not into the system tray and it won't let me click on it. Computer seems fine , the only one thing I've never noticed is when i restart my computer it always Doings at me as it closing down. The noise sounds like when i try clicking something else when i haven't OK something does that make sense. It might have done it before but i have never noticed. I've only noticed now as I've never restarted my computer so much. :)

I've attached the 3 reports that you wanted. I did notice that one of the reports says Trojan in Quarantine, that's sounds scary!!!! I'm getting a bit better on the computer.

Hi stacey

Well done again for working through all the instructions and thanks for posting the logs.

Stacey wrote:Yellow shield still comes up but does not download anything, but does disappears but not into the system tray and it won't let me click on it.

I just wanted to check that we are talking about the same yellow shield. Does it look like this one?

Stacey wrote:I've attached the 3 reports that you wanted. I did notice that one of the reports says Trojan in Quarantine, that's sounds scary!!!!

Yes, I guess it does... but, in fact, it's good!

The Kaspersky scan shows that there are a number of infected files in Housecall, a-square's quarantine, and Windows system restore. We will deal with the system restore files later. To clear out Housecall and a-square, please do the following:

1 - Show hidden files
We need to show files and folders that are normally hidden.
In Windows Explorer, select Tools > Folder Options > View
Set 'Hidden files and folders' to Show hidden files and folders
Untick Hide protected operating system files.
OK
Instructions can also be found >here<.
** These files are hidden to stop something important being removed accidentally. It is advisable to hide them again after fixing your computer. **

2 - Delete suspect files/folders
Using Windows Explorer, browse for the following files/folders and delete as instructed
Note: Keep all windows closed except Windows Explorer

C:\Documents and Settings\stacey jordan\.housecall6.6\Quarantine\*.* <=== Delete ALL files in this folder but NOT the folder itself

C:\Documents and Settings\stacey jordan\Local Settings\Temp\*.* <=== Delete ALL files in this folder but NOT the folder itself

C:\Program Files\a-squared Free\Quarantine\*.* <=== Delete ALL files in this folder but NOT the folder itself

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

3 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please provide:
  1. confirmation that you deleted the files without a problem
  2. a new HijackThis log
  3. and any more problems?
Good Luck
Vino

Well i finally done it it took me awhile but i finally got there there were no problems. When i right clicked to empty recyle bin there were 2 bins..... One of them was Norton protected files. I delete that one as well. Then i had this bad feeling in my stomach that i shouldn't have done that. Was that a bad thing to do?

Here is my report.

You're obviously getting to be a bit of a computer wizard now! :D

Stacey wrote:When i right clicked to empty recyle bin there were 2 bins..... One of them was Norton protected files. I delete that one as well. Then i had this bad feeling in my stomach that i shouldn't have done that. Was that a bad thing to do?

No, that was OK.

I think the yellow shield is appearing and disappearing while it is checking for updates. Let's check that you have your updates set to the recommended setting of automatic.

Start > Control Panel > Security Center > Automatic Updates
Click the Automatic (Recommended) radio button (or leave it if it is already selected)
Click OK and close the Security Center window.

How is your computer behaving now? Any more problems?

Checked Automatic Updates that was switched on. I noticed when we did the Kaspersky scan at the end it had;

C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log Object is locked skipped

What does that mean?

Computer seems to running really well, it's running quite quick actually. Anti Norton did a sytem scan and that come back all clear. But i have no faith in my Anti Norton now. Why didn't it pick up on my Virus when it came through?

Hi stacey

When Kaspersky, and others, scan a computer's files, it can only scan those files that are not in use - which is why my instruction asks that all windows are closed before starting to scan. Kaspersky then reports back that the operating system (Windows) has locked the file therefore Kaspersky has 'skipped' it i.e. Kaspersky hasn't scanned it.

Excellent!

Unfortunately, no one antivirus program by itself will fully protect your computer. You need a combination of antivirus, firewall, and one or two other protection programs. Which nicely leads me on to...

Great News! Your log appears clean and here's some valuable information that will help to keep it that way.

1 - Enable Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we had to disable during the fixes we made.

2 - All Clean
This is adapted from my general post for the 'All Clean' status however please advise on any problems you may still have before proceding with the following:-

Hide your System Files
These files are hidden to avoid accidental deletion so please follow these steps:

Click Start
Open My Computer
Select Tools > Folder Options > Select the View Tab
Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section
Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click OK, OK

Reset your system restore points
This will remove any infected files that may have been backed up by Windows. Should you have any problems following this step, a tutorial is available >here<. Please note that you need Administrator privileges to do the following:

Turn off System Restore
Start > right-click My Computer and select Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Tick Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore
Start > Right-click on My Computer and select Properties
Click on the System Restore tab
Click on C: drive then Settings
Untick Turn off System Restore on this drive
OK, OK

Make Internet Explorer more secure
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note: If you are using IE, you may want to consider changing to Mozilla FireFox which offers more features than IE however remember that you still need to use IE for certain sites like Microsoft Updates.

Windows Updates
Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

Anti-Virus
It is important that your computer has anti-virus software installed and it is updated at least on a weekly basis. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Firewall
Using a Firewall in its default configuration greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read >here<

Anti-Malware Programs (all free)
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them on a regular basis:
  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
These two tools (Ad-Aware & Spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machine.
    >Tutorial<
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer. >Tutorial<
