Bad things happening on my computer

Unread postby Gamekid » February 16th, 2007, 9:51 pm

In the last week, I have had a lot of things, mostly bad, happen on my computer. At this point, I have had to turn some things off in order to fix certain things. I may have a possible virus spyware/malware or corrupted file somewhere. When I start up internet explorer, I get the following error message:
SiteAdvisor has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost.

Please tell Microsoft about this problem.
We have created an error report that you can send to use. We will treat
this report as confidential and anonymous.

Also my mcafee internet security software is turned off right now and if it's online, my AOL software seems to hang because if I sign on, the program will hang on checking password for a broadband internet connectin on a cable modem. I'm not able to update my mcafee even though I have the update option set to fully automatic, I have never seen the update process work. Here is my HiJackThis log:

Few questions..
Does your version of McAfee have a firewall?

If it does I also see AOL's fire wall looks active also.
Having 2 firewalls running is never a good idea. They will interfere with each other.
If this is the case I would probably try to turn of AOL's firewall.

_____________
To disable your firewall in the AOL Safety and Security Center software:
1. Access the AOL Firewall software. If the AOL Firewall software has not been disabled, on the right side of the AOL Safety and Security Center window, you will see a message indicating that your firewall is on.
2. Click the Turn Off link. A message window will be displayed, alerting you that your firewall has been disabled.
3. Click the OK button.

__________________________

Let me know what you are using as far a a firewall..

How long have you had McAfee site adviser ?
Any correlation between the time you have had it and your problems ?

In your next reply I would like to see:

  • The report from AVG antimalware.
  • Please answer all my questions as best you can.

I would like to focus on the adobe reader program right now. I have uninstalled the AOL safety and security center because the program stopped working. I do not have any mcfee program installed right now. I don't believe that I have any firewall program active right now, even the one that comes with windows. I believe that the adobe program is corrupt so what would I remove from the add remove programs list?

You say you have no McAfee programs installed?
These are in your log. and they are from McAfee.

C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\PPRT\bin\ITMRTSVC.exe
C:\Program Files\McAfee\MBK\MBackMonitor.exe

c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\mcafee\mcproxy\mcproxy.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\VIRUSS~1\mcshield.exe

Having your anti virus turned off is never a good idea.

This line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sscRun] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\1105228050\ee\SSCRun.exe
shows me AOLs firewall is set to run at startup.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startup ... 15498.html

to remove any programs you may not want use add/remove programs. Then reinstall it.
We do sort of concentrate on Malware at this forum.
I will need to see those logs please. Before repairing some things it is best to be certain you as as free of malware as possible.

Also I see you have pest patrol installed. It does generate alot of false positives. Removing something that is supposed to be there is never a good idea.
