Hi, first time posting so hope i'm doing this correctly.
I have been having some problems with my pc for a while now with runtime error pop ups and I asked on the pcadvisor helproom forums for assistance in getting rid of this, I thought I had sorted the problem by d/l asquared & spybot and removing what was found.
I accessed my internet banking last night and didn't think anything of it, this morning at just after 9am my bank called me and said that they have received a report that I have a trojan virus on my pc and my internet banking and debit card details had been compromised and that both had been cancelled. They gave me another number to call for a card to re-issured and said that they wouldn't reinstate internet banking until my pc had been cleaned (they didn't ask for any personal information)

My initial thought was that it was a scam, so I called my bank directly to ask about this & they confirmed it was genuine and I spoke to debit card services, internet banking and also fraud prevention department and they all confirmed it was for real & not a scam. I've been asked on pcadvisor how the bank knew about the trojan on my pc and all i can say is that i don't know, they didn't say anything other than that they'd received a report. I confirmed with my bank (in second telephone call) what the last activity was and it matches with the last time I used my card to withdraw cash on Tuesday so nothing suspicious has happened and nothing has been taken from my account, although they said it was likely scammers have my banking details!

The only thing I can presume is that me logging into internet banking y/day has triggered something & therefore prompted my bank to call me this morning. The people on the helprooms in pcadvisor suggested that I use the facility here and create a log and ask for your assistance.
As a bit of background, I have Ad-Aware, Spybot, Asquared, AVG free edition & Zone Alarm running on my pc & all are up to date & I have run virus checking and it found nothing on my pc.

I did however come across a link on here to download some trojan hunter software on a 30 day trial, I did this & it found the following :

Trojandownloader.small.1142
winfixer.122

I cleaned & removed these from the pc, but my question is how do I ensure that I won't get them back & how do I ensure that my pc is covered sufficently in the future. The log file is below, any help greatly appreciated (please try and explain things in simple terms as I don't understand computer jargon) thankyou so much :

Hello and welcome to The Malware Removal Forums.

My name is curlylad and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess , simply post back with your query and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions !

I have now had chance to have a good look through your HijackThis log.

I see no obvious signs of an infection that would cause your financial institutions to come to the conclusion that you may be subject to fraud or theft from your banking accounts or credit cards.
However this does not mean that there is not a keylogger or back door trojan present on your system the type of which can steal your personal information.

Because of the warning from your financial institutions, and the potential catastophic results of trying to clean your system but leaving such an infection present are too great for me to ignore I offer you really only one safe, realistic and appropriate option and that is that you need to format your system and reinstall Microsoft Windows.

However should you decide that you wish for me to clean your system I will gladly help you do this but I will never really know whether there is still a backdoor trojan or keylogger running silently in the background.
Should you choose the option to format I will of course take you through that option step-by-step if you require me to.
  • At this point I advise you to disconnect immediately from the Internet
  • Get to a known clean computer and change all your passwords where applicable
  • Also contact any of your financial institutions that are not yet aware of your current situation
  • Many experts in the security community believe that the only real safe option is to reinstall your operating system

Please consider whether you wish to format your system and reinstall Microsoft Windows or whether you would like me to attempt to clean your system.

When you have decided please post back.

To help you make your decision please read through the following articles

How do I handle possible identity theft, Internet fraud and credit card fraud ?

When should I format, how should I reinstall ?

Hi,
Thanks once again for your reply. I would like to go with whatever method you suggest is the safest to be honest as my computer knowledge is pretty limited & so are my financies. I cannot afford to buy a new pc of take this one into a repair shop.
So if you feel a complete reinstallation is the best way forward then I am happy to go with this however the only problem I have is that I do not have a second PC, this is the only one I have regular access to.

So I'd need to know what I was doing before I started if you understand what I mean, so that I would be able to print off instructions and follow it that way, should I come into any major problems and be unable to get back online, then I could possibly get access to the internet at a friends house although that isn't a guarantee.

The only disc I have is my original Windows XP disc with product key, which i'm told is service pack 1 :? I've been asked if I have back up/recovery discs but the answer to that is no. This is really the only disc I have which I bought when I bought this PC as it originally run on Linux.

I have software for all my other things printer etc..
One other thing, when I have completed it all & I reinstall windows and get access to the internet , how do I go about protecting myself until I can d/l anti virus, firewall etc etc & is what I currently have on my pc sufficent or do I need to purchase better anti virus software?

Thanks again for helping me & sorry for all the questions, but as I said I don't know that much about pc's.
Sarah.

I think that the best option here is definately the format and reinstallation.

Since that is the route we are going to take then here's what you will need to do.
  • Please read through this document thoroughly http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat/
  • When you have read through it please then print out a copy of it for your reference
  • Make sure that you haven't accidently cut off the bottom or side of the document whilst printing it out
  • Next familiarise yourself with the individual steps it is asking you to perform - if you are unsure of one minute detail please post back and ask me and I will go through it with you
  • When you have read and understood the entire document and there are no questions, make sure you have all the tools/programs etc downloaded onto removable media (eg CD)
  • OK, you should now be ready to begin the format and reinstallation
  • If however at this point you are still unsure of anything then post back with any query you may have no matter how trivial you may think it is and we will go over it
  • Make sure to take your time and perform each step as described, if you do that then you will soon have a newly installed operating system free from any malware or other unnecesaries.

Good luck and make sure to post any queries before you start the procedure, I am expecting a lot of questions from you so don't be afraid to ask.

Hiya
sorry you had to get the one who doesn't know what shes doing!

Right I have read your post & will print off the instructions in just one moment, but you mentioned d/l stuff onto removable media. I don't have anything I can d/l onto.I do have r/w in my tower but it stopped working some time ago & someone suggested to me that the laser has probably burnt out & i've never got around to replacing it or buying a new one.

The stuff you are referring to, is that ad-aware, AVG etc :?
If so maybe I could use a friends pc to d/l it onto a disc? but if thats the case I'll also need to know how to do that, as whenever i've d/l a program i have just saved it to my pc, never anywhere else.

I do have the original XP disc as I mentioned, this I assume I'll need, but if you could just be a tiny bit clearer on what I need to save to removeable media, then that would be fantastic.

Sorry to be pain.

Sorry again with the delay in getting back to you, snowed under with work this weekend but I'm good to go now.

OK let's look at the points you raised.

sorry you had to get the one who doesn't know what shes doing!

First and foremost please do not apologise we all had to start sometime.

If you do not have a means of downloading onto CD or DVD perhaps purchasing an external hard drive may be the option.
You can simply transfer all your important data onto it.
The other options would be to hook up to a network and transfer your important data to another PC in the network.
Or perhaps use a friends or family members PC to do the downloading.

The stuff you are referring to, is that ad-aware, AVG etc
If so maybe I could use a friends pc to d/l it onto a disc? but if thats the case I'll also need to know how to do that, as whenever i've d/l a program i have just saved it to my pc, never anywhere else.

The programs to download as an absolute minimum are an Anti Virus Program and a Firewall
At the moment you are using AVG Free Edition because you are familiar with that program then I would advise downloading this as your Anti Virus.
You are using Zone Alarm as your firewall, again because you are familiar with this program I would advise this as your choice.
Both these programs are good free programs that work well together so this is a good start.

The other programs you mention are in my opinion necessary but can wait until you have reformatted and got up and running.

As for downloading, if you have access to a friends PC to do the downloading I'm sure if they have this facility then they will be familiar with the procedure.
If your friend cannot help either, then in this example we will use CDs as the removable media
  • Select the program you wish to download from the Internet
  • Click the Save button in the download box
  • Using the drop down box at the top choose to save the download to the the CD drive
  • Place a blank CD into the drive that the download is to be downloaded to
  • Click to start the download procedure.
  • The required program should now be downloaded onto your blank CD ready for installation onto the newly formatted PC.

I do have the original XP disc as I mentioned, this I assume I'll need, but if you could just be a tiny bit clearer on what I need to save to removeable media, then that would be fantastic.

The items/programs to download onto removable media are as I stated above, an Anti Virus program and a Firewall.
You can also as you asked download Ad-Aware and Spybot and other such programs but the 2 most important are the Anti Virus and the Firewall.

In addition to the Windows XP CD and the product key you will need the driver CD that came with your PC.
Each PC has it's own unique set of drivers that need to be installed to make everything work.
If you do not have this then if you read the article that I provided a link for, it tells you how to proceed if you do not have your driver CD.
You should also have an installation and/or driver CD for other hardware devices such as printers and scanners.
If you have a printer for example but not the driver CD just simply go to the manufacturers web site and the drivers should be available for free download, make sure you have the correct make and model of your hardware device ready.

Sorry to be pain.

Your not being a pain, your just learning and we all had to start exactly where you are now so please do not apologise for trying to educate yourself.

The main thing here is that you may feel this to be a daunting prospect, that's normal as you have never had to tackle this before but as long as you follow the procedure as per the topic then there is no need to be worried.

You'll be fine !

Has that answered your questions?
Have I explained everything or do you need me to go over anything more, as I said do not be afraid to ask.

Hiya
thanks for getting back to me. First off the guys over on PCadvisor thought it best I mention this here aswell. I'm due to give birth soon (baby is due 9th March) so if I disappear without telling you, it isn't that I don't want continue this process or have lost interest, simply because I'm in hospital!!! They said that sometimes threads get locked if not used, so thought I had better pre-warn you so that doesn't happen on here.

Secondly I have saved all of the discs that I got with my PC when I bought it. It was running on Linux when I bought it but that was switched to Windows soon after. But I have software discs for everything that came with it. I was given the scanner & printer from my brother & he also gave me the discs (have just checked).

I have a cd/dvd r-w in my tower but it stopped working, have no idea why, someone said maybe laser has gone it ....but as its still in tower, would i need installation disc for that aswell? If so i've got that anyway.
Just I want to make a list of what I need to reinstall and what discs I need so that I can make sure I have everything to hand before starting.

The only thing on my PC that I want to save are my photos and I've decided to upload them to an online photo album/storage place. Have used one before and it was fairly simple, so that should be ok.

I have a friend who lives downstairs, who is equally confused by PC technicalities as I am but she has internet access and has said should I run into any problems along the way I can use her PC to communicate with you on this forum.

So I think that is everything covered??

If so I'm ready to make a start when you are....I've got the stuff printed off that you asked me to do.

Really sorry.

More questions. Printed the information out but just running through it all on screen the questions etc & the part where it says

Do you have an IDE or a SATA hard drive?

The second step is to right click on the Disk : 0 bit & it brings up one of two windows with either IDE or SATA on it....

Well mine doesn't I don't think , I get the following :

ST340015A

Device type - Disk Drives
Manufacturer - (Standard Disk Drives)
Location - Location 0 (0)

Device Status - This device is working properly.

absolutely nowhere on that screen does it mention IDE or SATA
Is that a problem?

Firstly may I be the first to offer my congratulations in advance of your new arrival, I hope all goes well for you.

so if I disappear without telling you, it isn't that I don't want continue this process or have lost interest, simply because I'm in hospital!!! They said that sometimes threads get locked if not used, so thought I had better pre-warn you so that doesn't happen on here.

Don't worry about that what so ever.I will stay with you here on this thread until we are both satisfied that your PC is reformatted and up and running with new and improved security measures.

Secondly I have saved all of the discs that I got with my PC when I bought it. It was running on Linux when I bought it but that was switched to Windows soon after. But I have software discs for everything that came with it. I was given the scanner & printer from my brother & he also gave me the discs (have just checked).

So you have the
  • Windows XP CD and original product key
  • The drivers disc
  • The driver/installation discs for your other hardware device(s)
  • Stored onto removable media or web site your data that you wish to save

I have a friend who lives downstairs, who is equally confused by PC technicalities as I am but she has internet access and has said should I run into any problems along the way I can use her PC to communicate with you on this forum.

Can you confirm that you have the capability to download onto a CD via your friends PC
  • An Anti Virus program, AVG Free Edition
  • A Firewall, Zone Alarm

I need to know that you have at least these 2 programs on a CD or DVD before we begin.

A word of encouragement at this point, try not to stress yourself out when doing this for obvious reasons !
Just remember that there is absolutely no rush what so ever, just take it one step at a time and post back using your friends PC the moment you have a slight doubt about any of the procedure in the document you have printed.

Now lastly just please confirm to me that you have the correct driver CD and we are about good to go.

Hiya
ok I have the original purchased copy of windows XP & original product key.
I also have all of the following disks - I am not entirely sure what some of them are, but obviously must be for the things that I need, I've kept all the installation discs that came with this pc , plus a couple of others that I had with my old pc (which i no longer have) The discs are as follows :

Ulead Video Studio 6 (think this is to do with my digi cam which i rarely use)

Verto Auto-Installation Driver Set up disc (haven't a clue what thats for, think possibly graphics card that was in my old pc)

Xwave series driver disc (I think this is for my speakers)

Mandrake Linux 9.2 Installation Desktop CD 1 (but I gather I won't be needing that)

Samtron Installation Driver CD (this is for the Monitor)

Goodmans installation CD (this is for digi cam)

Epson software disc (this is for printer)

Microsoft Suite 2000 x 6 set up discs (I don't use these though)

Norton Internet Security 2004 original disc & product key (but I can't get on with this - had it on pc and kept causing alot of problems)

A CD which simply says "Drivers & Utilities" - Abode, Acrobat Reader, Fuzzy Logic, Live Update, PC alert, PC-cillin,useful website (have to confess not sure what that is for)
:?

Nero CD (r/w software but my r/w doesn't work anyway)

Cyberlink Multimedia pack with product key - powerdvd etc (think that is also to do with r/w)

Packard Bell installation disc (this is for scanner)

now somewhere amongst all that must be the disc i need for the pc itself - i hope - or is that it was running on linux that I don't have a driver for the tower - or don't I need one? am so confused

**My friend has a r/w and also one of those removable memory stick things, which i'm sure I could use to save stuff onto, BUT I don't understand how to save firewall & anti virus onto disc, whenever I've d/l it before, have just automatically saved it to pc, how do I save to disc or memory stick? sorry.....could you give me step by step instructions and i'll ensure I do that before I begin**

just with regards to my previous post about the whole IDE/SATA harddrive thing, do I have anything to worry about these, as I have absolutely no idea whatsoever which I have as it didn't look like either of the pictures on the tutorial

the c&p of the notepad bit on the tutorial aswell, do I need to preform that step?

and lastly many thanks for the congratulations. [/list]

Sorry deneka, I posted back answering your penultimate post and didn't realise you had posted again.

OK if you take it that this post will now answer your last 2 posts we should be OK.

The second step is to right click on the Disk : 0 bit & it brings up one of two windows with either IDE or SATA on it....

Well mine doesn't I don't think , I get the following :

ST340015A

Device type - Disk Drives
Manufacturer - (Standard Disk Drives)
Location - Location 0 (0)

Device Status - This device is working properly.

Your particular hard drive is SATA but be careful, when you go:-
Start > Run > deskmgmt.msc if you get a screen that says something like Hidden recovery partition then you must Stop immediately what you are doing and post back informing me of this.

Backing up your important data

The only things I want to save on my pc are photos of my kids & family, but I can put these on an online photo album. The rest of the stuff is not important, so can I skip this bit?

As long as you have saved your photos etc to a place of safety, in this case a hosting site then you can download them back onto your PC once it is up and running so if you wish to save nothing else we can indeed skip that bit.

Service Pack 2. I don't understand that bit. (sorry) do I do this when I'm back online or do I need to do something now before reformatting?

Do not worry about Windows Service Pack 2 for now.
Once we are up and running we will get you to update to Service Pack 2 then.

am lost about all the drivers!!! I really thought I had this sussed but apparantly not, the more & more i look at it, the more confused i'm becomming. Ok I have software discs for my printer which is Epson, Scanner which is Packard Bell, I have a Samtron monitor which came with discs when I bought it & the tower itself is made by ?? actually i don't know, can't see a name on it but have all the disks that came with the pc when i bought it.
my mouse, keyboard etc, i just assumed were straightforward plug them in & go kind of things, is this not the case?

OK, you apparently, if I have this right, have some discs that came with the PC.
You have a disc for the Epson printer and the Packard Bell scanner - great, put those to one side until after we are back up and running.
Your mouse and keyboard could be plug and play or the drivers for them could be on this elusive disc we seek.
As I have just said, place the discs for the various things you know - the printer and scanner to one side, what do you have left ?
There should be a disc that says on it something like Driver CD or System and Driver CD.
If any of the remaining discs do not say this on them, and they do not have any indication that they are the driver disc then we must assume that you do not have the correct driver CD for your system.

If you do not have the correct driver disc then go to the Drivers ! section in the document now that tells you what to do if you do not have your driver disc/CD.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This is now to answer your last post

ok I have the original purchased copy of windows XP & original product key.

Great, this is our first need covered.

The other discs that you refer to are:-

Ulead Video Studio 6 - video editing and DVD authoring software.
Not needed for this format.

Verto Auto-Installation Driver Set up disc - This is for a graphics card.
Not needed if you no longer have that particular graphics card installed.

Xwave series driver disc - Driver disc for your speakers.
If you still use the speakers then install the driver for them from this CD after the format is complete.

Mandrake Linux 9.2 Installation Desktop CD 1 - Linux drivers, not needed.

Samtron Installation Driver CD - Monitor driver CD.
We will need this after the format/reinstallation.

Samtron Installation Driver CD - Without knowing the serial number of the product or the product I.D. number I will have to take your word for this.

Epson software disc - Again if you know this to be for your printer then keep this until after the format.

Microsoft Suite 2000 x 6 set up discs - Make sure this is put to one side out of the way so as not to get it mixed up with a disc you need.

Norton Internet Security 2004 original disc & product key - If you do not wish to use this then that is fine.
We will as I stated previously get you to download a Anti Virus and Firewall to CD.

A CD which simply says "Drivers & Utilities" - Hmmmmm, this could be the one we need, what does the cover look like ?
Does it have all that text printed on it or is this written on the cover in the CD case ?
Please take the CD out of its cover and tell me what Exactly is written on the CD itself.

Nero CD - This is for your Music/CD/DVD authoring and editing etc.

Cyberlink Multimedia pack with product key - powerdvd etc - Similar to the Nero, for music/CD/DVD.

Packard Bell installation disc - As you say the scanner CD.

Good, we have a lot of what we require it is just the one disc I am interested in now

A CD which simply says "Drivers & Utilities" Please post back as soon as possible telling me what is written on the CD itself.

OK the next point you raise

how do I save to disc or memory stick? sorry.....could you give me step by step instructions and i'll ensure I do that before I begin

We went through this in an earlier post but no problem , this is how you would download the program to a CD.
  • Select the program you wish to download from the Internet (e.g. AVG Free Edition Anti Virus)

Hope this helps.

Next you say

just with regards to my previous post about the whole IDE/SATA harddrive thing, do I have anything to worry about these, as I have absolutely no idea whatsoever which I have as it didn't look like either of the pictures on the tutorial

As I have outlined above, yours is a SATA drive.

the c&p of the notepad bit on the tutorial aswell, do I need to preform that step

If the tutorial says it, then thou shall do it !
Yes, please follow all the instructions no matter how meaningless they may appear to be.

OK, hope that has covered everything but please remember I still need to know about the driver CD.

and lastly many thanks for the congratulations.

Not at all, my pleasure.
Just remember Brian is a good name for a boy (wink wink) ! ;)

Hiya

ok all disks that i need are in a seperate pile away from the ones that I don't.

The 'Drivers & Utilities' disk...there is no case, it came in a white paper envelope type thing. on the front of the cd itself it's mainly blue in colur & on right hand side has a picture of buildings and people. on the left hand side in a box it says
*Abode Acrobat Reader
*Fuzzy Logic
*Live Update
*PC Alert
*PC-cillin
*Useful Website

I don't know if that means anything to you, as it certainly doesn't to me.

My PC tower says : AMD Athlon XP on a sticker at the front, if thats any use to you?

***********************************************************

With regards to the SATA bit & the start>run>deskmgmt.msc
do i need to do that before i start and then post back, or won't i be able to do that until afterwards & then need to use my friends pc to check back to you?

***********************************************************

The Samtron disc is 'user guide - install driver' and at the bottom of the disc it says BH59-00335D-03. Is that the serial number you are referring to? on my monitor it says Samtron 76E. :?

***********************************************************

Right think we're getting there. Just need to sort out if we have the driver or not for the pc - am going to go and re-read the part about if i don't have it and make some notes on that.

Thanks again.
Sarah.

deneka

Yes you're right I think we are getting there.

Going from the information that you provided about the mystery CD I will have to assume that this is not the driver CD for your system.
All that information relates to different programs and not to a systems drivers.
Please proceed to follow the tutorial instructions as if you have not got the driver CD.

Regarding the SATA Hard Drive, again just follow the instructions exactly in the order that they are outlined in the tutorial.

Regarding the Samtron monitor, do not worry about that for now.
We know the serail number and have the driver CD.
Please however put the CD where you can find it as it will be needed after we are up and running again.

Does that answer your questions ?
