hi all ,

i am new to these forums and certainly do not wish to run afoul of any protocol ... i kinda figured this is the place/way to start .

i have a comp (XP) that is infected with "startpage.21.ar" (and possibly other nasty stuff) ... i tried a system restore (safe mode too) to no avail . i reloaded (repaired) windows with the same results ... boot up is normal untill just past the startup logo and then there is a black screen with an arrow . i can bring up task manager/applications and browse thru the folders and files . everything seems to be normal except for the obvious ;) .
i am not certain as to how to impliment "hijack this" or load it in this case . i am familiar with comps (but by no means a guru) and not afraid to try something ... as long as i have instructions on what to do .

any help in this matter would be most appreciated .
thanks in advance ...

Hi,

You have the Smitfraud Trojan,

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Please right-click: HERE and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Grinler's reg file. Save it to your desktop. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg

Locate "smitfraud.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
Hotbar

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\system32\hhk.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SMSSU.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tmntsrv32.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\opzhwdvc.exe

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following, if found, (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard
C:\Program Files\Hotbar

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED

i am posting this information as it may be of help to others at sometime .

an "on the fly" update ...
not having the "normal" desktop makes this a bit interesting .

copied files/progs on one comp ... burnt them to disk ... transfered files to the sick comp using the task manager (switching back and forth between desktop folder/cd drive using cut and paste) .
i tried to run the "smitfraud.reg" ... "problem accessing registry" ... booted comp into the safe mode , found a user profile that allowed access to the registry (it was not "admin" !!) ... ran the reg program again ... it merged with the registry .

... continuing to the next step .
more to follow as it becomes available

weeelll ... i am stuck at the point mentioned above . i cannot find a way to access the control panel or the add/remove programs . i did a search at microflop for a listing of path names to those sections i may need access to ... i came up empty handed . is it absolutely imparative that i get to the add/remove programs at this point ? running the start menu might get me around the problem as i could open the control panel from there .
i am also wondering if there is anything in the recycle bin that i might be able to restore in order to get the desktop back . heh ... i can't find the path for that !
does anybody have a list of paths for the various sections i need to access ?

/me walks away muttering with a little saliva running from the corner of mouth ... :toothy10: :tongue3: :sign11:

Hey CWB,

Really yes it would be a great hep if you could access Add/Remove as removing those that I have asked through that will also take the registry entries with them.

Im not sure about paths to Add/Remove, let me shop around

Hi CWB,

Please try this to remove those items:

Open HJT, Click on Miscellaneous Section/Tools, then Open the Uninstall Manager (Thanks LD and Chris)

Uninstall the above from there, Let me know how it goes

hehehe ... the game is afoot !! ;)

"hijack this" ... can open the "genuine" windows add/remove frame ... cooolll ! it also generates a simpler listing of what is installed .

"security iguard" shows in the list . there are two others ; "hotbar outlook tools" and "shopper reports by hotbar" ... i assume that these are permutations of the four items you listed for removal ?
i did a google search for "hotbar" and found these and others listed in the same class (pure junk) .

/me does the happy dance .

...(sigh)...

i followed thru ... clipping right along ... did the final restart ... the comp starts normally ... goes thru the"blue windows welcome screen" ... then turns to a solid blue with an arrow ... no desktop/icons .
the hijack logfile looks good as far as i can tell . i compaired the running processes on my comp with the sick one ... i tried starting a couple of them ... it says it can't find them to run them ... but that may be due to the differences in machines ... i did not look them up to see if they were associated with the desktop or not .

edit ; whoops ... i see the entry ... "security iguard" ... one more time !

Hey CWB,

Ok unfortunately Smitfraud is still present on your system,

Also please dont do any rebooting, or messing around unless I ask, as this wil only help the problem plant its foot again back on your system, Just do as the fix asks (I know its harsh)

I have included the links for the downloads again incase you have deleted the current copies

We need to run the fix again (note it has changed though)

Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT*CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

I need you to copy all of the Killbox file paths below and paste them into Notepad.

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
http://www.atribune.org/downloads/KillBox.exe

* Save it to your desktop.

* Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Open the Notepad file where you saved the file paths earlier and copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\bsw.exe
C:\Windows\sites.ini
C:\Windows\popuper.exe
C:\Windows\system32\hhk.dll
C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

While still in Safe Mode, do the following:

Make sure all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis and place a check next to the following items, if found, then click FIX CHECKED

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://default.home
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Security iGuard] C:\Program Files\Security iGuard\Security iGuard.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WindowsFY] c:\wp.exe

Close HiJackThis.

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download The Hoster Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip

2.) Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp! http://www.spywareaid.com/index.php?fil ... tware&id=1

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan! http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan
