Can you please check my system for me. It has been running very slow lately. I have run some scans but nothing shows up. Here is my log file:

I am running windows xp and I discovered my cpu usage is at 100% quite frequently.

Thank you!

Hello golf1here,

I don't see anything outstanding in your log. Bring up the taskmanager by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL and see which processes is spiking up near to 100% please. Post the name in your reply. Does it happen all the time or only during surfing on the web ?

Run[/b] HijackThis, click on None of the above, just start the program, click on Scan. Put a check in the box on the left side of the following items if still present:

Hello,

The Kaspersky report is clean.

golf1here wrote:the processes spiking are svshost.exe and ixplore.exe earlier it was svcxhost.exe but all afternoon today it was ixplore.exe

I suppose you mean svchost.exe and iexplore.exe ?

It only seems to happen when I'm on the internet

From what I can see, you probably have the phising filter turned on. Do you have this update installed ?

The computer may respond very slowly as the Phishing Filter evaluates Web page contents in Internet Explorer 7
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=928089

or you can try this workaround
Start Internet Explorer 7.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then click Disable Phishing Filter in the Settings list.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Restart Internet Explorer 7.

Let me know if that helps.

Also, which version of McAfee is installed on your PC ?

Iwasn't able to download from the microsoft site. It said something about not being able to find a program to open the file. But i did the workaround. That did seem to help. Also i right clicked on my McAfee icon and I think this is the version you asked me for (McAfee MISP Shell) Thank you.

Hello,

Iwasn't able to download from the microsoft site. It said something about not being able to find a program to open the file.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
You will have to validate. Save the exe to your HDD, once saved run the file. You don't need any programs to open the file, it's an exe installer.

Did the workaround improve anything ?

Also i right clicked on my McAfee icon and I think this is the version you asked me for (McAfee MISP Shell)

Doesn't really help, you should see a program version ... 6 or 7 ...
Normally you can get that in most programs by going to the About menu item.

Hello,

First off all, glad to hear that the workaround did help so it might be usefull to activate the filter again (it's a protection) and get the update installed. :)

The McAfee version is 7.2

Thanks for checking. Apparently the slowdown was not related to McAfee at all, but I needed to know the version just in case.

I'm sorry what is my HDD

No worries. :)
HDD = Hard Drive. The disk that contains your OS. The place where all your files are saved.

Hello,

I have been notified by Elrond, one of our other teachers that the svchost spike might be related to Windows Update and from time to time you get a spike that takes a couple of minutes. I was told that Microsoft has a patch for it but it can only be obtained at request thus not available for download from the Knowlegde Base Center.

Most people simply live with it.

Kim
