Hi anniesboy68.

Your HijackThis log is clean but there are a few things we need to sort out. I have been looking through your thread on PC Advisor. SpyHunter is not on the list of "rogue programs" now but you were right to uninstall it. It was giving you false positives exactly as "gudgulf" told you. The so-called trojans were entries in your registry which stopped you going to 'bad' sites. I have similar entries in my registry.

-----------------------------------------------

Disable Programs

You have Windows Defender and AVG Anti-Spyware installed. These are good programs but they could interfere with our 'fix'.

Disable Windows Defender's realtime protection.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.
Remember to re-enable it after we have finished.

Disable AVG Anti-Spyware Resident Shield

Please check the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top.
  • Under Resident shield is... make sure that this shows as inactive or not available in the free version.
  • Change it, if necessary.
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan.

-------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
-------------------------------------------

NoAdware4

This program used to be on the list of "rogue programs". It has now been removed but I suggest that you uninstall it. Please go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs: NoAdware4

--------------------------------------------

HijackThis Fix

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Have you had Webroot SpySweeper installed on this computer? If so, and you have uninstalled it, please include the following green line in the fix. Otherwise please leave that one and let me know.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: WRNotifier - WRLogonNTF.dll (file missing)

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.

    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.

----------------------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:

You already have this program installed. Please update it and make sure that the settings are as shown below.
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
You may need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
  • Under How to act? click Recommended actions and select Quarantine from the menu.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.

Boot to Safe Mode. To do this:
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

Hi anniesboy68.

Your logs are clean! :)

A quick question: did you uninstall NoAdware4? It's gone from one section of your log but still shows as being run at startup.

Yes I did and removed the folder. However, since reading your post I note there are two more folders namely No Adware 3 and 4. I shall remove them promply. Incidentaly, my AVG Spyware is the free version, would you recommend purchasing the full version. In addition you may have noticed somewhere in the log I have Crap cleaner installed. Can it remain?

Hi anniesboy68.

It looks as if NoAdware didn't uninstall cleanly. It would be a good idea to delete those folders, but we also need to get rid of the registry entry.

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following, if present (don't worry if any are missing):

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NoAdware4] "C:\Program Files\NoAdware4\NoAdware4.exe" :Min:

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above items are checked and then click on Fix checked.

AVG Anti-Spyware:

If you purchase the full version you get automated updates and the real-time protection (Resident Shield). It's up to you really. I use the free version and scan about once a week. I update manually frequently and always do so before running a scan. It's a good idea to run ATF Cleaner or CCleaner before scanning as it reduces the scan time.

BTW There is no need to run it in safe mode for routine scans. We only do this to avoid difficulties with removing 'nasties'. If you think that you're infected, then run it in safe mode - otherwise normal mode is fine.

CCleaner

This doesn't show in HijackThis logs. It is a very good program. I recommend that people don't use the 'Issues' feature unless they are familiar with the Windows Registry.

--------------------------------------------------------

This is my standard 'speech' once someone's computer is clean. Forgive me if you already do some, or all, of the following.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Set Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt to Disable
      • Set Allow Scriptlets to Disable
      • Set Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Set Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Set Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Set Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to 'Prompt'
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to 'Prompt'
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the OK button to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that you have a good anti-virus program running on your computer. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Without one, you are wide-open to infection. Two good ones are Avast and AVG. Both are free, for personal use.
  • Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (even more if you can). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Kerio and Zone Alarm are both good and have a free version.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure you always have the latest security updates installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • If they are not already present, I would recommend that you download and install some, or all, of the following programs (all free):
    • Spybot - Search and Destroy -Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer, alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
    • Ad-Aware SE Personal - Download and install Ad-Aware SE Personal. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Instructions for Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware
    • SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and websites into your Internet Explorer and/or Firefox browser settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. An article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor and Firetrust Sitehound. These both give warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. I use Sitehound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).
  • Update all of these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
