408,

Welcome to MalWare Removal! My name is David, and I'll be assisting you with your computer problems. As an Undergrad, all my fixes will be checked by an expert before I post them for you, so please be patient with any perceived delays. Now and until we're finished, please:
  • Do only as I tell you to do, and don't follow instructions at another site or thread
  • Ask if anything at all seems unclear
  • Keep me informed of any noticeable changes to your system
Do this, and we'll have your computer fixed in no time! :D

I'll post back to you as soon as my instructions are OK'ed. In the meantime, could you please tell me what sort of problems you are experiencing?

408,

I don't see anything malicious in your HijackThis log. What sorts of problems are you experiencing?

Let's go ahead and take a slightly deeper look...

Make an Uninstall List Using HJT
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply, along with another HijackThis log, and a description of what problems you are experiencing.

Thanks!

408,

First, I want to apologize for keeping you waiting. Your log required a lot of study because, so far, you have no obvious signs of infection. (Also, it's just been a very busy day -- once again, I'm sorry if it's been inconvenient). Don't forget that I have to get my fixes OK'ed first, too. With this in mind, it's time to dig a little deeper. Three scans of various types follow; make sure to do them ALL!

Run Kaspersky Online Scanner
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner - click here.

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Search for Malware with ComboFix
Download Combofix abd save it to your Desktop. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Search for Rootkits with GMER
Download GMER to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
  • Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer, so save any work you have open
  • Double click gmer.exe.
  • Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
  • If no warning....
    • Click the rootkit tab
    • To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked... leave everything checked.
    • Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Once done click the Copy button.
  • Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your Desktop.

After the scans finish, post-back with the Kaspersky, WinPFind, and GMER logs, along with a new HJT log. If the logs will not fit in a single post (and they won't), please split them over several replies. Thanks! :)

Go ahead and post the other 3 logs (including the new HJT log) -- we'll see what those reveal, and take it from there.

I am real sorry it took me so long to reply back, but I was out for a week or so, and haven't come back to my bros house 'till today. But anyways, here the logs you wanted. Also, I'll get you that Kaspersky log in an hour or so, but here's the rest of them.

408,

Right now, I still see no evidence of malware in any of your logs. Perhaps we can try and figure this out:

1) What game was your brother's account on?

2) Were any security settings (ie firewalls) changed to allow for the game to function?

3) How did your brother come to realize he'd been hacked?

4) What did your brother's password consist of? (a word, random letters, random letters/numbers/symbols, etc.)

Hopefully this can clear-up things a bit more.

Regards,
David

Now lets see . . . .

1)If I am right, the game he plays is World of Warcraft

2)Nope, no security settings were changed, as far as I know, but I highly doubt it though. (I think though when you install the game or, start it up to acess the internet, his Firewall had asked if he should allow it or not, and of course he did, in order to play, but I think that has nothing to do with it of course . . . .)

3)Well he came to realize it by, I guess ALL of his characters items were gone, and he was locked out of his own account; this has happend three or so, times before.

4)Since he had got hacked more than three times, he had multiple passwords, but all of them were 6+ characters words, and along with 3+ numbers. EX: square666 (If this is what you mean)

408,

While there is no way to say for certain how your brother's account was hacked, I can say that it was not malware, and more than likely it was something much simpler: his password.

Take a look at this page, and the guidelines for a secure password, which must:

* not contain [English Words]
* contain at least 3 [Lower-Case Letters]
* contain at least 3 [Upper-Case Letters]
* contain at least 2 [Numbers]
* contain at least 2 [Non-Alphanumerical Characters]
* be at least 8 characters in length for [Total Characters]
* be sufficiently random - [Binary Signal Entropy] greater than 300

A password like square666 passes less than half of those tests, and would take less than a day (sufficiently so) for a cracker to brute-force guess. Try the applet on the site and see if the passwords you use would suffice!

Unfortunately, I'm willing to bet that a weak password was all it took to clean-out your brother's account. Consider it a lesson well-learned, especially when it could've been a PayPal account, bank or credit card site, etc...

Is there anything else that remains a bit hazy and you would like clarified? Just let me know, and tell your brother to use a password that satisfies all the above conditions!

Regards,
David

That was never his password, that was just an example . . . .
