Hi Sethland.

At first glance I do not see anything that looks bad but that does not mean that there is nothing there.

I would like you to answer some questions regarding the behaivior of your computer. When does the very high CPU utilization happen? Close to the start of the computer. Does it continue for a long time? How long does it continue? Are you getting the high CPU usage connected with the svchost intermittent?
This could be a problem that has to do with Windows and not with malware at all.
Therefore describe the behaviour as well as you can so that we can avoid hunting for something that is not there but on the other hand not miss somthing if it really is a malware problem.

Brand new laptop. SVCHOST.EXE is running very high.

Unread postby Sethland » January 20th, 2007, 6:53 pm

The CPU runs very high at the start of the computer. It prolongs for some time and then it "hibernates" for awhile. I have seen one of the SVCHOST.EXE processes run at more than 50,000 k when it starts up at around 25,000 k. I am aware of some processes using the cpu belong to my Norton Internet Security 2007. Also, for example, one of the SVCHOST.EXE processes is now at 42,948 but it's hardly using the cpu. It started around 26,000 k but now it's idle at this stage. I have run another program called Windows Worm Door Cleaner and it's the one that detected the unusual state of this said SVCHOST.EXE. It is stating that it might be infected by a virus. Of course, I performed a full system scan with an updated virus definitions and it didn't find any virus/worm/trojan.

My computer seems sluggish too.

The very high spike in the CPU use at the beginning often has to do with Windows automatic update. I have the same problem on my laptop and I have seen a lot of discussions about it.
To check that this really is the this problem I would like you to download Process Explorer from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysint ... lorer.mspx.
Save it to the desktop so that it easy to find. When you reboot open this program by doubleclicking the icon as soo as possible. It will show you what programs is using the cpu. It will also show what programs are using the svchost that is maximising the CPU. Let Process Explorer run in the background while you are using the computer. If you put the computer into Standby or hibernate check Process Explorer when waking up the computer. Let me know what the results are.

Hi Elrond,
Thanks so much for that information about Windows Process Explorer. It's a great resource tool to keep me well informed about the processes and dll's that are running in the background on my laptop. I guess I may have over reacted about the spike on my cpu regarding SVCHOST.EXE. This is something new to me since it hasn't happened until now or maybe, I just didn't noticed it before.

Thanks again.

This behaviour only started a few month ago and hopfully Microsoft will have a patch for it soon.
Let me know if you see anything else that is suspicious as we will then start hunting for other things.
