New comuter, now new problem

Unread postby gdietman » January 8th, 2007, 12:20 am

I ran several free anti spy programs because of a new problem. When I go on the internet via IE (defaults to yahoo.com) I do a search for something. The 1st few results look legit, but when I click on them it sends me to several different generic search pages 1st instead of the address (web page) shown. I haven't been doing anything different except trying Second Life recently. Here is my report from HiJackthis:

Register to Remove

Unread postby Mr_JAk3 » January 8th, 2007, 10:35 am

Hi and welcome to the Malware Removal Forum :)
You seem to have an infection there...

We need to make sure that HijackThis.exe is in safe location. Download HijackThis to your desktop from here

Create a new folder for HijackThis to the desktop and move HijackThis.exe into it.

At first you need to disable a few realtime protections. These may interfere with our cleaning process.
We'll enable these when you're clean...

Disable SpywareDoctor's realtime protection.
  • Open Spyware Doctor
  • Click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
  • Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".
  • Exit the program.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/l ... areout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish. The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.

Finally, please post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

quick question

Unread postby gdietman » January 9th, 2007, 11:46 pm

Im new & I thought we were done. Yesterday I downloaded & installed Windows Defender from Microsoft's website. Does this change the process we started or can I continue with the instructions above? Please let me know because I don't want to mess this up.
Thanks

Hi :)

Don't worry. Just disable Windows Defender's realtime protection before starting with the intructions. We may enable it when we've got you cleaned.

Disable Windows Defender's realtime protection.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Uncheck "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.

Thank you for letting me know :)

Hi again, it is looking clean now :)
The computer is running fine ?

You don't seem to a firewall running, you must install one firewall.
NOTE: If you're using Windows XP firewall, I recommend that you install a better firewall. Windows firewall doesn't really provide enough protection.
Disable Windows firewall after installing a new firewall.

These are good (free) firewalls:Now you can enable Windows Defender again.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click on "Tools"
  • Click on "General Settings"
  • Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
  • Check "Turn on Real-time protection (recommended)"
  • Click "Save"
  • Exit the program.
Now you can clean AVG's Quarantine:
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Click Infections
  • Click Quarantine tab
  • Click Select all
  • Click Remove finally
  • Close the program
You can remove the tools we used.

Then there is a one optional removal if you want so speed up your computer:

BigFix or BigFix.exe process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. BigFix or BigFix.exe can automatically download and read technical support information provided by computer and software manufacturers and other technical support experts (published in the form of Fixlet® Messages) and can automatically check your computer for bugs, configuration conflicts, and security holes. It should only be started manually as it's a resource hog. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - Global Startup: BigFix.lnk = C:\Program Files\BigFix\BigFix.exe

=============

Now that you seem to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Clear your system restore
This will clear the system restore folders from possible malware that was left behind during the cleaning process.
  • Use ATF Cleaner
Download and install ATF Cleaner. Clean your temporary files & folders with it regularly.
  • Use Ad-Aware
Download and install Ad-Aware. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Use AVG Anti-Spyware
Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Use Spybot S&D
Download and install Spybot S&D. Update it and scan your computer regularly with it.
  • Install SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Install MVPS Hosts file
This prevents your computer from connecting to harmful sites.
  • Use Firefox browser
Firefox is faster, safer and better browser than Internet Explorer.
  • Keep your systen up-to-date
    Visit Windows Update regularly.
  • Keep your antivirus and firewall up-to-date
Scan your computer regularly with your antivirus.
  • Read this article by TonyKlein
So how did I get infected in the first place?
  • Stand Up and Be Counted !
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Stay clean and be safe ;)

One more Question

Unread postby gdietman » January 13th, 2007, 1:20 pm

The step to disbale BigFix is something I think I did, but now I get this message upon boot:

WARNING: Conflict with Internet Explorer 7

Microsoft recently released Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7).

BigFix has received various reports of compatibility issues with IE 7. IE 7 can prevent Fixlet messages from being displayed.

BigFix strongly recommends clicking on the link below to apply a change to BigFix that will allow it to work in conjunction with IE 7.

Important Note: When the link is clicked the following actions will occur:

BigFix will close.
A blank DOS window will open and then close.
BigFix will reopen.

Click here to resolve this issue.

Also, on final steps, I currently clean nightly with cc cleaner, have Window Defender from Microsoft running because of these is it still recommended to run & install the ATI programs? And with this BigFix, it seems more trouble than its worth, what benifit does program provide.

Again thanks for all your help!

Hi again :)

So you fixed th BigFix O4 line with HijackThis ? If you scan again with HijackThis, the O4 entry isn't visible in the log anymore ?
Do you get warnings on every reboot or was it just the one time ?

You don't have to use ATF Cleaner if you use CCleaner.

Well the benefit of BigFix....I haven't used the program.

BigFix or BigFix.exe can automatically download and read technical support information provided by computer and software manufacturers and other technical support experts (published in the form of Fixlet® Messages) and can automatically check your computer for bugs, configuration conflicts, and security holes.

But you may restart the program manually if you need it, no need for it to start automatically.

So you're trying to install ZoneAlarm and it alerts about Google Desktop/Toolbar...
If you don't use it, please see if it has an uninstaller in Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and remove it via there first.

Removing the folder without an uninstaller leaves leftovers to the pc.

Please ask if you have any questions :)

Hi gdietman :)

If you don't post back in a few days I'll assume that the problem is solved.
