Hi Codrington,

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly

Hi Codrington,

I see one infection in your log and the other is hiding. Please do the following.

This program can block removal of infection please disable.
Disable A-Squared Guard
- Open a-square
- Click on "Configure Background-Guard"
- Deselect "Enable background guard on system startup"
- Close window
- Close a-square
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Please do the followng:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Please Post these in your next relp to this thread:
vundofix.txt
rapport.txt
New HJT log
for me to recheck

Hello Codrington,

Thanks for posting logs.
Ok there are still infected files in log.

Do not run this tool yet just download I will let you know when to use it.
Download and run Killbox
Download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop

-------------------------------------------------------

This is to double check that AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 is turned off
Disable program can interfer with HJT fix.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Tray Icon (on bottom right corner of monitor screen) and choose Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
---------------------------------

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

------------------------------------------------

Now please do the following:
Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DllRunning] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\hfdbywau.dll",setvm

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

--------------------------------------------------

Start Killbox place a tick next to [+]Delete on reboot
Copy this file path into the windows clipboard, all the bold below...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hfdbywau.dll

Back in Killbox go to > file (Top left corner) > choose from drop down menu paste from clipboard.
Next, click the red highlighted X button and say NO to the prompt to restart the pc.
Now, exit Killbox and restart Your PC.
--------------------------------------------------

You should be back in normal mode here.
Rerun VundoFix

----------------------------------------------------

Now you should be back into normal mode.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Please post in your next reply to this thread the following logs:
vundofix.txt
kaspersky scan report
New HJT log.

Instructions Carried out Pt 1

Unread postby Codrington » January 7th, 2007, 4:47 pm

Thanks for your continued help
I have had a hard time posting this info, just probably me not used to this type of forum
I have had a problem in Safe Mode where I keep getting prompted. The box askes if I want to continue in safe mode or carryout a system restore.
This happens every 20 seconds or so. I did manage to run the programs you requested.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

There are two more files we need to take care of.

Start Killbox place a tick next to [+]Delete on reboot Press the ALL Files button <<<< This is important to hit the ALL FILES button now

Click the red highlighted X button and say NO to the prompt to restart the pc.
Exit Killbox and restart Your PC.

Hello Codrington,

Great job. Your logs appear to be clean and has for the safemode problem I am trained in malware removal so I have not found out what could be causing the prompt you are getting but it does not appear to be coming from infections so I will list some sites you can try for help with hardware problem I am sure one of them could help you. I am sorry I could not help on that part.

Your version of Java is now outdated. Java vulnerabilites are commonly exploited by viruses. You need to update.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Click Start then Control Panel > then Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed to complete uninstall.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now let do some tiding up. Please delete these tools that I had you download. They update so frequently that new verisons come out as we speak here so they are of no longer of any use.

VundoFix.exe and C:\vundofix.txt
SmitfraudFix.exe and SmitfraudFix folder
combofix
Killbox.exe

Now go back and reable A-Squared Guard

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be:-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.
Image
Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is Vundo and Smitfraud please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

May your God go with you..
