Runtime error and HJT log

Unread postby LeeB » January 2nd, 2007, 8:02 am

Hi

Hope someone can help with the following. I'm trying to uninstall Itunes and Quicktime. In add/remove programs the installshield wizard starts momentarily but them shuts down. I think this is related to a problem with Quicktime as when I try to run Quicktime it gives the error message.

Microsoft Visual C++ Debug library

Debug error!

Program: C:\Program Files\Quicktime\QuicktimePlayer.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way etc etc.

I've heard this type of problem can be caused by Malware?. MY HJT log is below, I'd appreciate it if anyone can have a look and let me now if anything looks suspicious. Thanks

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Greets, John.

Hi,

Your computer seems clear. I've got two questions:
Do you have Apple things installed?
Do you have Tiscali as ISP?

The Debug problem isn't malware and we'll be able to fix it, probably.

Step 1: Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Download and Run VX2Finder
Download VX2Finder by Option^Explicit from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click to run it.
Click the Restore Policy button on the right hand side, and then OK in the Administrator Policy window that opens.
Close the program.

Step 3: Disable AVG Anti-Spyware Guard
I see from your log that you have AVG Anti-Spyware installed.
The program is a 30 day trial but you can still use the free version after the trial.
The trial version however does not have the real time protection utility so its executable can be disabled as a service to save sytem resources.
You should be able to disable AVG Anti-Spyware guard like this:
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking it's icon in the system tray.
  • In the 'Your security status' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware Guard realtime protection 'off' by clicking 'active' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
  • When you reboot, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the guard?".
  • Reply 'No' and set it to 'inactive'

Step 3: Tell me if you still have any problems

Greets, John.

Hi John,

OK I've carried out your instructions. The only problem I had was with AVG anti-spyware. I couldn't see active/inactive in the status section. My AVG looks like this in the status section.

Your Computers security

Resident Sheild: n/a
Automatice updates: n/a

Last Update: 03/01/07 Update Now
Last Scan: 03/01/07 Scan Now

Signatures in Database: 577,515 Reset counter
Detected malware so far: 490
Files in Qurantine: 0 Show quarantine

I can't see an Active/Inactive button anywhere? Is there another way to disable the executable?

I ran VX2Finder and the computer rebooted itself, was that OK?

My ISP is Tiscali and the only Apple products I have installed as far as I know are Itunes and Quicktime.

I should also mention that since I sent the last e-mail I have changed my security software. I no longer run Mcafee (subscription expired) but have ZoneAlarm Firewall and AVG Anti-virus instead. (Both Free versions). Are they OK?

Forgot to mention..... Itunes and Quicktime still don't work, neither can I uninstall them.

Hi,

Your resident shield seems to be n/a so it's ok. Also, it's not bad that the guard starts with Windows but it can use some system resources.

I use ZoneAlarm Free and AVG Free Edition too and I think it's very good!

I see some signs from eTrust in your log too. You probably don't use it anymore so please uninstall it.

Step 1: Uninstall eTrust
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    eTrust Internet Security Suite
  • Close the window
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CaISSDT] "C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Internet Security Suite\caissdt.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eTrustPPAP] "C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Internet Security Suite\eTrust PestPatrol Anti-Spyware\PPActiveDetection.exe"

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.
  • Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following folder (if present):

    C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Internet Security Suite
  • Now just exit Explorer.

Step 2: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Make sure the log is saved.

Step 3: Find properties of C:\Widows\System32\Msvcirt.dll
Please check which version C:\Windows\System32\Msvcirt.dll is.
Go to Msvcirt.dll in the System32 folder > Click on it with your rightmouse button > Click Properties > Go to the tab Version > Copy/paste the version into a reply together with the Uninstall log.

Hi,

Lets try the Windows Hotfix.

Step 1: Download and Run a Hotfix
Please download the hotfix here:
http://aknow.prevx.com/zerol/WindowsXP- ... 86-ENU.exe

Run it and reboot.

Step 2: Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step 3: Post a new HJT log and tell me if the problem is solved

Greets, John.

Hi John

OK I've done that. The problem is persisting unfortunately. I cannot uinstall Itunes or Quicktime + Quicktime still gives the runtime error when I try to run it.

Hi,

As this is a computer troubleshooting issue, not a malware issue, I suggest you use the following link to go to the CastleCops General Computer Problems forum for help from a CastleCops SRT...

I recommend that you register before posting your problem. Registered members can receive notification when there has been a reply to their topic. There is no way for CCSP to notify "guests" when they have received a reply.
