Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Greets, John.

Hi,

I've got one question for you first. Have you got the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware or not?

If you have got the free version please do this, if you have got the paid version you don't have to do this:
You aren't running Anti Virus Software. Please download and install one of them first!!!

Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
I recommend AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition)!

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Disable AVG Anti-Spyware Guard
The program is a 30 day trial but you can still use the free version after the trial.
The trial version however does not have the real time protection utility so its executable can be disabled as a service to save sytem resources.
You should be able to disable AVG Anti-Spyware guard like this:
  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking it's icon in the system tray.
  • In the 'Your security status' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware Guard realtime protection 'off' by clicking 'active' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
  • When you reboot, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the guard?".
  • Reply 'No' and set it to 'inactive'

The 'winsys2freg' can be cleaned without any problems, normally. First I want you to scan another suspicious file so if it's bad we can remove it together with the file coming from your main infection.

Upload a File to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Click on Browse... and navigate to the following file: C:\WINDOWS\System32\systysj.dll
Click Open
Please let me know the results.

Hi. I never could upload the file onto the jotti website in order to scan it although I could plainly see it on the first HJT log. Since, when I run subsequent HJT logs it is no longer there. I may have accidentally done away with it trying to find it on the jotti site.

Here is the latest HJT log:

Hi,

I'm sorry you had to wait so long but I come from the Netherlands (GMT +1) so it's really difficult to have fast communication with American people like you...

Please copy this fix to notepad or word, or print it, because you won't always have internet access!

Step 1: Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsys2freg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Update AVG Anti-Spyware
  • Open AVG.
  • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
  • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Step 3: Download and Run AFT Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 4: Boot into Safe Mode
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Step 5: Show your hidden files
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
  5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Step 6: Delete bad file
Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following file (if present):

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll

Now just exit Explorer.

Step 7: Run AVG Anti-Spyware
Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.

Sorry that it has taken me so long to respond but I had to travel out of town this past week and I have been away from my desktop. At any rate, thank you very much for your help and I will follow these steps and post the results asap, perhaps this evening. Thanks again.

Hi,

Seems like that worked :D

Step 1: Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winsys2freg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\winsys2f.dll (file missing)
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step 2: Post a new HJT log
Also tell me if you're still experiencing any problems.

Greets, John.
