Might need help - HJT log posted

Unread postby EM » December 20th, 2006, 9:27 pm

Three months ago, I was surfing what I thougth was an innocuous site when a flurry of pop-ups and NAV activity alerted me to a problem. I thought it was all fixed: NAV, Spybot SD, and Ad-Aware found nothing. A few days later, though, things started crashing and my browser was hijacked so any search took my to X-rated sites. I ended up reformatting my computer to get rid of the problem. Last night, I got the same thing--several sequential pop-ups and a bunch of activity that NAV says it fixed. Again, NAV and Ad-Aware find nothing. Spybot SD found that all my windows security settings were turned off, which I corrected (though I may have turned them off and do not remember). Rescan after that found nothing wrong. I ran HJT hoping someone would look at it and maybe I could head off what I fear in coming in the next couple days. Thank you in advance. Here is the log:

Hello EM

Welcome to the MalWare Removal forums! I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

In order to help me help you, please observe the following while we work:
  1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't continue, we don't want to start all over again!
  2. Understand that cleaning your computer can sometimes take multiple passes/posts,
and it's important to follow the steps as listed including re-running scans as listed
  3. Please reply to this thread, do not start another.

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly.

Hello EM,

I need to get you to rename HiJackThis.exe some infections hide from scan because of the name.

Please do the following:

1. Go to HijackThis.exe icon NOTE: located C drive > HJT folder > HiJackThis.exe
2. Right click on it and choose rename
3. Type showme.exe Note:Make sure to type exactly what is in bold blue
DONE

--------------------------------------------------------

This scan will show what HJT does not.

Next do the following:
1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

---------------------------------------------------------

Please run online scan
Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button NOTE: If you have a popblocker enable you will have to allow popup here.
2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
3. Enter your Country
4. Enter your State/Province
5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
6. Select either Home User or Company
7. Click the big Scan Now button
8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes. You may have to reboot here and start back with step 1. I did.)
10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply with others requested.
--------------------------------------------------

Please post these in your next reply to this thread:
combofix's log
Panda scan report
New HiJackThis log
after renamed

Hello EM,

Thanks for posting logs.
I need to know if you are still getting those popups and a description of them?

I have not gotten one in a couple days, but I have been minimizing my internet use until I know if I have a nasty or not--pretty much I have only been checking for responses on this site. Yesterday I got one asking me to register my software, but it did not say what software I was registering. It might have been legit or it might not, I am not sure.

Hello EM,

Ok this should take care of thoses please do the following.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
  5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
------------------------------------------------

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

----------------------------------------------

Use Explorer to navigate to and delete the following file (if it is present) just what is in red:

Files:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\EM\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler.exe

If it will not delete in normal mode you will have to boot into safe mode and try again.

How to boot into safe mode if needed.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Now navigate to file and delete.
When finished reboot back to normal mode

-----------------------------------------------

Java has release another update "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Click Start>Run type in appwiz.cpl and hit Enter and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

------------------------------------------------

Please let me know if you are still getting anymore popups.
Please post one more HJT log for me to recheck.

-Changed the viewing of files as recommended
-Ran HJT and deleted the line you directed
-The file was not present in the directory to which I navigated
-Downloaded JRE6
-Uninstalled Java V5 U10
-Installed JRE6
-Ran HJT. Log below

A couple questions before I lose you, though...
1. It seems like this was pretty tame as malware goes. Is this the case?
2. You determined that the other file identified by the Pandascan as possibly being a nasty was not a problem?
3. At this point, then, can I assume that I am in good shape as far as there are no keyloggers ot backdoor trojans on my machine (I get the heebie jeebies seeing some of the infections people have)?
4. Do you recommend anything for preventing infection other than what I have: NAV, Spybot SD, AdAware? Spywareblaster or something is one that I think I have seen recommended here and elsewhere.
5. Thank you SO much for your help. If you pronounce me clean after this HJT log, you will have given me great piece of mind. Have a Merrry Christmas.

A couple questions before I lose you, though...
1. It seems like this was pretty tame as malware goes. Is this the case?

Yes your logs appear to be clean.

2. You determined that the other file identified by the Pandascan as possibly being a nasty was not a problem?

Potentially unwanted tool:Application/PRScheduler Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\EM\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\PowerReg Scheduler.exe
PowerREGISTER from Leadertech. Registration reminder as used by Iomega, Hasbro & Microprose - amongst others
Not bad just annoying.
This one fixed.

Possible Virus. Not disinfected C:\Program Files\Collectorz.com\Book Collector\FlicAPI.dll
This came back not bad.
http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/dddsof ... s/1493801/

3. At this point, then, can I assume that I am in good shape as far as there are no keyloggers ot backdoor trojans on my machine (I get the heebie jeebies seeing some of the infections people have)?

Yes you are in good shape.

4. Do you recommend anything for preventing infection other than what I have: NAV, Spybot SD, AdAware? Spywareblaster or something is one that I think I have seen recommended here and elsewhere.

That is a good list you will see that in mine All clean speech post.
For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read here

5. Thank you SO much for your help. If you pronounce me clean after this HJT log, you will have given me great piece of mind. Have a Merrry Christmas.

You have a very Merry Christmas too.

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. You can go back and rehide system files:
    1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
    2. Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
    3. Select the Tools menu at top of this screen and click Folder Options.
    4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
    5. Remove checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
    6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button(round circle) labeled Do not Show hidden files and folders.
    7. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
    8. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
    9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
  2. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  3. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  4. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  5. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  6. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  7. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  8. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  10. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  11. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is ................ please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

May your God go with you..

Thank you for all of the info. I am afraid now that the request for registration was legitimate. Everytime I try to print something now, I get a window that comes up with "RTL" in the blue title bar. Inside it says: "Unable to start driver for HPZip12.exe (HPZip12.exe)". Clicking the OK button allows printing to proceed, but clearly something is not right. Do you think that the removal of the PRScheduler related to the appearance of this error window?
