Dear whoever can help me,

Please check my HijackThis log. My operating system is Windows XP. There are 2 users on my computer, Admin, and Christine (which is me). Admin works fine, but I cannot seem to be able to use Christine because I keep on getting the following messages:

MediaAccess.Exe Application Error
The aplication failed to initialize properly

and

MediaAcck.Exe Application Error
The aplication failed to initialize properly

Two things: both of these come with numbers in parentheses after them, I can write them down if needed and let you know, and they will NOT stop popping up! It seems like they come over and over again like a thousand times. Possibly I am too impatient, but I think that this shouldn't be happening. I have to manually turn off my computer to get back to Admin. I can't run ANYTHING once this starts happening.

I have run various programs such as Adaware and Spybot and virus scans such as McAfee and Trend Micro On-Line scan, and those haven't fixed it.

If you can help, thank you thank you thank you so much!!! ~Christine

Register to Remove

Unread postby crunchie » June 25th, 2005, 9:10 am

queenchristine41,

Hi and welcome to the Malware Removal forums :). I will be assisting you to clean up your PC.

===============

If you haven't run HouseCall lately, let's go back to www.trendmicro.com, download the latest definitions, and run it.

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments(prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from this system. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

MediaAccess.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\s0e3o5cv.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccess.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

O2 - BHO: My Web Search Bar BHO - {8EAB99C1-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB\bar\1.bin\W6BAR.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qpwdqryl] C:\WINDOWS\qpwdqryl.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [s0e3o5cv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\s0e3o5cv.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe

O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/CDT/i ... e-c139.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/31b16535fb3 ... xIE601.cab

Now, with all windows closed (including Internet Explorer) except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\Media Access
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearchWB

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\s0e3o5cv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\qpwdqryl.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Let me know how everything goes.

Couldn't get very far...

Unread postby queenchristine41 » June 25th, 2005, 4:31 pm

Hello again,

I did everything in order exactly as it says (just so I won't screw up anything) and when I got to the part where I get into Hijack This to kill process of:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\s0e3o5cv.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccK.exe
C:\Program Files\Media Access\MediaAccess.exe

this popped up twice:

The selected process could not be killed. It may be protected by Windows.

I tried it again and again and again, and got the same result as before. Then I even tried doing it in Safe Mode, but they weren't even listed there. I don't want to go on any further down your list for fear of doing something wrong.

Any ideas?

Thank you!
Christine

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Finally, everything worked this time, except that this:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qpwdqryl] C:\WINDOWS\qpwdqryl.exe

was not listed to delete, but I think it doesn't matter.

Thanks again!
Christine

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus.
There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

===============

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.
