Senior Citizen here - need help

I hope I am posting this in the correct forum. I allowed a teenaged son of friends to use my computer for schoolwork. The next day my browser (IE6) would not work. Had to access the internet by going to Run option and typing in URL. Was finally able to download IE7 but it was very unstable as was just about everything else on the pc. For those of you who don't use IE7 the History is located in a rather obscure location at least for me, maybe my old eyes and all. I finally was able to find it and discovered a few porn sites had been accessed. I confronted the teen and told him he had caused the problems with my computer and emphasized he could not bypass SiteHound. Of course he did and the infection got worse. I counted 51 porn sites plus many pictures he had googled.

It isn't like I don't have protection on my computer. I use an AV program, Registry Mechanic, Spyware Doctor, Win Defender, Spybot plus Zappit and a firewall. I also use defrag and scan disk. I now have the pc working pretty well but what I want to know is there anything else I should do? Naturally he will never be allowed to use my computer again but is there any way beyond continuing to run the programs I am using now that will detect any malware not found? Can any of this malware have caused corruption in files or become embedded that would cause further problems? I don't consider myself to be a guru when it comes to computers which is why I am here.

Any advice, thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello meandy...welcome to malware removal! The first thinbg we need to do is get a HijackThis log to analyze your system:

* Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Seeing that HJT log makes me want to see a HJT uninstall list before we start 'cleaning'. I do not see anything too particularly malicious in there, most of it is 'minor':

Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

The good news is that there is really not much in there.

Are those Nielsen and Net Meter/Ratings programs there by your choice? Some anti-malware sites describe them as 'spyware' as they monitor your surfing habits, but they do not garner any personal information about you..so, if you want them there it's your choice. Let me know.....

I am also 'fixing' two registry entries below in HJT for Weatherbug since I do not see it in your uninstall list...I am assuming that you had uninstalled it previously. If you want a 'clean' and 'free' alternative weather program, let me know and I'll provide a link!

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

2. Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

3. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

4. Update Java and Remove old Java Versions

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 10.<== scroll down the list to find THIS entry
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

Remove older Java Versions:

• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Install latest Java Version:

• From your desktop, double-click on jre-1_5_0_10-windows-i586-p to install the newest version.

5. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Re the Nielsen and Net Meter/Ratings, at one time I allowed them to be added but no longer want or need them. Apparently never were much use because they didn't work properly.

Your guess about Weatherbug is correct, I had uninstalled it quite some time ago, didn't realize it was still there. Yes, if you have a better weather program, I would like to have the link.

I do appreciate so much all you are doing to help me and I do feel better because you said there isn't much in the logs.

I will run the Panda scan tomorrow and post the results.

I just want to let you know that I am still trying to work through the Panda scan. Two scans but both times when the page refreshed to get the results (or go on to the next step) I would get the IE error page not found. Snarl. Will keep trying.

Good job meandy....Panda didn't find much either, and that is good. It's obvious that you are very careful with your internet habits! If Panda gives you the option to disinfect, go ahead and let it fix what it found..that would be great.

Let's do this:

1. Clear IE's Cookies and Cache

• Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.
  
• Go to Control Panel » Internet Options » General tab.
  
• Click Delete Cookies.
  
• Next to it, Click the Delete Files button.
  
• When prompted, place a check in: Delete all offline content, click OK.

Clear Firefox' Cookies (if you use Firefox browser)

• Open Firefox.
  
• Click Tools » Options.
  
• Click the Privacy tab, then the Cookies tab.
  
• Click the Clear Cookies Now button.
  
• Then click OK to exit.

Clean Temporary Files

• Go to Start » Run » type: cleanmgr » OK.
  
• Choose (C: ) and then click OK.

That's OK about Panda....I did not mean for you to have it clean for a fee. Some products clean without any charges!

Did you do the removal of Nielsen/Net Ratings and the HJT fixes as I asked in my last post to you? The HJT log entries are still there in the log. Perhaps one of your onboard anti-spyware programs are inhibiting HJT from removing them, so I'm going to have you disable spyware doctor and then do the instructions again. We'll also do an AVG anti-spyware scan and cleaning...which is 'free'!:

1. Disable Spyware Doctor:

From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".

2. First download AVG anti-spyware (previously Ewido) from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program

• Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
• Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
• On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
  • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
• Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
• Under "Reports"
  • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
  • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

3. Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

4. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

5. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

6. Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

• Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
• Navigate to the listed folders, then right-click to select them and click delete

7. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:

• Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
• Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
• ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  Once the scan is complete do the following:
• If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
• Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
• Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
• Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

8. Post the results of the AVG report scan and a new HJT log for me to review....
