Help! Cant figure out whats wrong

Unread postby lion163 » June 15th, 2005, 4:55 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if someone could help me. Ive been getting some pop-ups of stuff like winfixer, this search42 thingy comes up sometimes by itself. In addition my antivirus software detects something it calls Trojan.Vundo.B but cant delete/repair it. Ive run Spybot S&D many times, it doesnt detect anything, altho the first time i did, it detected some CWS variant, which it supposedly removed.

Please could someone help me out here, getting really annoyed with my computer crashing.

Thanks

Hi lion163, Welcome to MR :)

Let's see what's running on that system; post up a HiJackThis log for analysis.

===============

Download, then unzip to "C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Now, let's do the following:

1. Click "Scan"
2. Click "Save log"

Notepad will pop-up with a copy of your system long, then:

1. "Edit | Select all"
2. "Edit | Copy"

Now paste the log into your next reply here.

Hi

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from HERE

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from HERE

Step 2:

Download the file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of vbvga.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the vbvga.dll's under winlogon click OK.

If you see any .ini or .bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of vbvga.dll then click the kill button.

If you see any .ini or ,bak files with either the same name or the file name in reverse, kill them as well

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44} - C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\vbvga.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vbvga - C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\vbvga.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\vbvga.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and say yes to the delete prompt but no to reboot now
then repeat with any of the reverse named .bak or .ini files

after you have input the last file name then reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

It also said something about the computer having a large number of hijacked domains at the start of the scan.

Thanks!

Hi

Please download HOSTFIX from here

Unzip it to its own folder.

Double click HOSTFIX.exe and when it prompts you to Fix your Host File click on YES

Reboot, run another Hijackthis scan and post back the new log.

lion163, sorry for the delay in reply. I must have missed the email notification.

Your log is now clean :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  1. Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  6. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
