browser hijack

Unread postby Gripper » December 1st, 2006, 5:53 pm

Hi There :)

I have been hijacked and cant seem to find what the problem is. I've ran spybot and adaware and also done an online virus scan. The hijack most likely came from a porn site which a friend looked at at the weekend. I'm not tyring to say that I dont look at porn ocassionally because I do, I'm just careful about sites I use. I know he looked at alot of porn when he stayed because I have since checked the history :(

You guys have helped me once before and I wondered if you would be kind enough to help again...

Many Thanks

Hello Gripper...welcome to Malware Removal...you have a Wareout infection!

We need to do some things before we 'fix' your malware problem:

1. You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues. If the program is in a temp directory, you will lose your backups if your temp files are cleaned!
Please create a directory on your C:\ drive called C:\HJT, move the HJT download into this new location and unzip HijackThis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on.

STEPS For Creating Folder
    a. Please go to My Computer, open your C:\ drive, Select: New >> Folder and name the folder HJT.

    b. Copy the HijackThis.zip download to the new folder

    c. Double Click on 'HijackThis.zip' to extract and install HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Run HJT from now on from this new folder...

If required, look at this Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

2. You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/l ... areout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads a text file will open (report.txt), you can close it - the file has already been saved.

Run HijackThis. Click "Do a System Scan Only", and place a check next to the following items (if found):

Close all other windows other than HJT, and click FIX CHECKED. Close HijackThis.

Finally, please post the contents of the text file that opened earlier (you can find it at C:\fixwareout\report.txt ), along with a new HijackThis log into this topic.

Hello Gripper...

You are welcome.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that you cannot change your homepage to google....is it that you 'can't' change it or do not know how?

Try this:

Open IE and type google's address (http://www.google.com) into the address bar. After the google page loads, click tools>>interrnet options and in the home page box check/select Use Current and then hit Apply at the bottom. Does this work?

I think that the additional file identified by FixWareout is 'OK', but I want to be sure...and your Java version is WAY out of date, and this is a security risk:

1. There is a file I'd like to get analyzed

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DMCPL.EXE

Just to be safe, go to this site and have it scanned:
VirusTotal File Scan

Use the Browse button at VirusTotal, navigate to the file's location on your hard drive and submit it to them.

Let me know the results.

2. Update Java and Remove old Java Versions
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.<== scroll down the list to find THIS entry
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Remove older Java Versions:
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Install latest Java Version:
  • From your desktop, double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windows-i586-p to install the newest version.

3. Post back with the Virus Total results and let me know if your computer is having any problems...

You are welcome....

What are your security settings set at?

It's possible the malware caused this problem....let's see if anything is remaining:

1. First download AVG anti-spyware (previously Ewido) from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Reboot your computer into SafeMode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight SafeMode then hit enter.

3. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

4. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

5. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

6. Post the results of the ewido report scan and the active scan report....also let me know if the problem with the inability to change the homepage persists.

interesting.....:

Adware:Adware/VideoAccess Not disinfected C:\Program Files\VideoAccess\Uninstall.exe
Virus:Trj/DNSChanger.NO Disinfected C:\WINNT\system32\kdejf.exe

These two entries make me think there might also be a Smitfraud variant on your system.

Please do the following:

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Great job....

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

Please post the C:\rapport.txt file along with a new HJT log and let me know if you are still having problems...

No problem...and I think I now see the problem changing your homepage in your HJT log:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

These options should only appear if your administrator set them on purpose or if you used Spybots Home Page and Option Lock down features in the Mode -> Advanced Mode -> Tools -> IE Tweaks section.

Since I do not see Spybot installed on your system, I have to assume that these restrictions were set by the system administrator...is that you?

If you did not set these entries with Spybot or another protection program, or if your administrator did not set it, then fix/check these entries as follows:

Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot your computer.

See if this fixes the inability to change the homepage....

We will still have a few more things to do.

I do have spybot installed.

The pc was 2nd hand when i bought it, but it is mine so i should be the administrator.

I do know that the administrator settings were changed ages ago by something one of my brothers did on here, because i have to go to control panel to open internet options....it wont let me do it from the web browser.

I am not particularly pc literate, so I have always let other people do the techie stuff on here :)

I used to have kazaa lite on here, but it stopped working....reading around I saw a newer version was available so i just downloaded and installed that....further reading around on here I saw that it wasnt recommended so i deinstalled and tried to install bittorrent - that wouldnt install as it said the file was corrupted. I'm letting you know this in case by doing this I have messed something else up....better safe than sorry.

In relation to wether i set the restrictions with spybot, quite posible when my homepage was google, but I honestly cant remember.

What do you want me to do now? (I'm away for the next day so no need to rush with a reply :) )

Many thanks again :)
