Lots of pop-ups

Unread postby grbayl » November 23rd, 2006, 8:18 pm

Hi, Tried all of the tricks in my bag and can't get rid of this. Lot's of pop-ups in IE7 - heavy.com,vortal.com,dittodomains.com,aol.com,exacttarget.com, etc

Have tried adaware, symatec Av, safety.live.com, spybot. They all find remanents and remove. I notice 2 suspicious BHO's tcblkosj.ddl, vcbhasst.dll - disabled them and they got reenabled the next day. Also two suspicious extensions - research and something about resolving connection problems

Also, I removed a couple of other BHO's last week when the browser quit working - sorry, can't recall what they were

Ran HiJack and here's the log:

Any assistance is appreciated

Hello grbayl....welcome to Malware Removal! :D

I want to see a HJT uninstall list first before we start cleaning:

1. Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Hello grbayl....LOL. How did you know I was a Doctor?

I think we can help....

You have a lot of online gaming entries in your Uninstall list....I know they are fun, but online gaming is a potential source of malware. It's is often difficult to ascertain which online companies are 'clean' or not, so be careful. Try 'googling' the game/company first to see if there are any reports of problems, but even then you might still be at risk. Most security experts will recommend that you stay away from online games, but that choice is of course yours.

In the 'remove programs' list below, you will find that I have listed some of the online games you have installed (like the one's from zylom which I believe are 'bad'). The choice of which to remove or retain is yours.

By the way, the presence of old Java versions is a security risk on your system, even if you are running the most up-to-date version (which you are). When Java 'updates', it does not remove the old versions of itself from your system...you need to do it manually. We will do it below.

Before we get started, I need you to set your system to 'reveal hidden files':

Reveal Hidden Files

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Check Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes.
  • Click OK.

1. First download AVG anti-spyware (previously Ewido) from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop, we will use it later in safe mode.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: RunBus Class - {4865F155-CE00-4E93-A414-147844D7C81A} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcblkosj.dll
O2 - BHO: SelasI Class - {59F4F380-01A0-4083-9FA4-E3B827319F7E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vcbhasst.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Chckup] C:\WINDOWS\system32\Netverchk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ItalU] C:\WINDOWS\system32\italfds.exe
O16 - DPF: {288C5F13-7E52-4ADA-A32E-F5BF9D125F99} (CR64Loader Object) - http://www.miniclip.com/puzzlepirates/m ... Loader.dll
O16 - DPF: {41ACD49D-1974-791A-0981-AA9872721044} (Ganymede Board Games) - http://67.15.101.3/g_bin/eng/boards_2_0_0_30.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

Cubis Deluxe
Drop
Drop!
Gold Miner (remove only)
Penguin Puzzle
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05

5. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcblkosj.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vcbhasst.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Netverchk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\italfds.exe

6. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

8. Post the results of the ewido report scan, a new HJT log and let me know how your system is running....

Hi Navigator,

Lucky guess about the Dr. part - it was just a take off on an old line from the movie Airplane! And you are correct about the online games - two teenage boys use this laptop on a regular basis - usually no trouble and I run a variety of checks on a regular basis. From the looks of what you had me check it looks like whatever happened was installed on Nov 10, 9:17 pm (netverchk, italfds) - can you tell me which game created these so we can avoid in the future?

I did as you suggested and the logs are later on but there are a few buts that may be relevant:

#4 - J2SE (all 4) could not be removed in Safe mode. I followed the rest of the instructions and removed and rebooted again after I was back in normal mode. Something about the windows installer not available in safe mode

#5 - tcblkosj and vcbhasst were not found and therefore not deleted but the rest were

#6 353MB (!) were removed. Also, there was no prompt to save passwords but that's no big deal

After I had completed these steps, I rebooted several times and each time was very (!) slow and all the desktop and control panel icons were rebuilt each time. I finally logged off, shut down and restarted and all the icons were still there but startup took >5 min. (HJT took about 4 minutes to run instead of the normal 10 sec) I did a task manager and the most misbehaving task was guard.exe which I determined to be part of AVG so I uninstalled (it was running in the tray) and bebooted again. Same result with a long startup and task manager showed wmiprvse.exe to be the cpu intensive process. I think this is part of Windows so I left it alone. Current state is I haven't had any popups, new BHO's haven't show up but it takes 10 min or so for a complete startup compared to the previous 30 sec.

Thank you in advance

Here's the logs (HJT is after I removed AVG):

I am uncertain why the computer would be 'slow' to boot etc....nothing we removed should cause that; as a matter of fact, it should have sped things up.

Microsoft has a link with ways to speed up your system...perhaps with all the 'junk' on the computer you need to do a disk defrag (which is one of MS's steps below):

http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/getstarted/speed.mspx

The HJT appears 'clean', and the Ewido scan didn't find much either. As to which online game added the 'bad' files...I really couldn't tell you. I just know that when I researched those files and entries in your uninstall list they seemed bad or suspicious. I have seen a lot of 'bad' logs and computers with problems with games from zylom and trymedia.

Let's do an online scan to see if it finds anything:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Update

Unread postby grbayl » November 25th, 2006, 11:39 am

An Update

Used IE for about 1/2 hr this am and no popups so far. Also, boot time was back to normal - perhaps MS Update or nav was running before and I didn't notice it. We'll see what happens....

Thank you very much for your assistance. This has been a thorny problem for me.

Great!

If problems redevelop, this thread will be open for awhile so just reply here and I can take a look....

You are welcome!

Your HJT appears clean and I'm glad your system is running well with out problems!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points.

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. These are excellent reads too: I'm not pulling your leg and Malware: Preventing the Infection
