Internet Problems

Unread postby Cameraken » November 12th, 2006, 4:00 pm

Hi.

First post here and looking forward to learning.

I have been asked to look at a Friends Teenage daughter’s laptop.
I was told that she is receiving popup messages asking for payment to remove spyware (or something) She it also complaining that the Laptop is running slowly. And some messages about cleaning the disk?

I have run AVG and it found four Trojans but they were all in the recycle bin.(Hidden) I deleted them and AVG ran clear of virus.
I also ran Adaware. It found about 15 problems which it repaired.

I believe Her Windows Updates are up to date.
One problem is that Her machine is set up for AOL broadband and I only have modem access so I can’t connect Her laptop to the internet. (Without changing her settings)

So now I am asking for your help.
I am attaching the HJT log and I would be grateful if one of the experts here could take a look and see if anything else is wrong.

Thanks in Advance.

Ken.

  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files a pop up will appear, answer Yes

  • Click More advanced options.
  • Click to select the Search system folders

Hi Gary

Thank you for your time, I really appreciate it.

There are three accounts on the PC but only one of them uses the internet.
They are all using IE only

The link you provided to AVG now links to Ewido. Which I downloaded. I also downloaded the manual updates to save me connecting the laptop to the Internet. The strange thing was that running the virus pattern did not find AVG installed. I had to locate the signatures folder for it manually.
As soon as I upgraded AVG I started getting messages about Adware_Hotbar which I have been clicking Ignore.

Gary I was working through the instructions and got to the line
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\holemovewmaidol

I cannot delete it because it is in use?

(I have killed this)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Wma Idol Eq Sixth] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\holemovewmaidol\mix tray.exe

Hi Ken,

Ewido anti-spyware got taken over by AVG and became AVG Anti-Spyware.
It's essentially the same program with a different skin. It's still downloaded from the old Ewido site.

Looks like they haven't quite upgraded the manual update facility properly (haven't tried it myself) sorry for the problems it caused.

Look forward to seeing the logs.

Hi Ken,

Looking better, but still some work to do.

I'm going to need a startup list from you.

Creating a Startup List
  • Open HJT, and click on Config followed by Misc Tools.
  • Check List also minor sections (full) and List empty sections (complete) before clicking on Generate StartUpList log.
  • A window will open asking for permission to create a log, answer Yes.
  • Notepad will open a text file, Save it please. By default it will be named startuplist.txt and saved to your HJT folder.

Please post me the list.

Hi Gary

I find all this fascinating. I have just applied to the University. I want to learn more.

Hi Ken,

Could you please go to Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programmes and check for Messenger Plus. If found uninstall it..
Perform a scan using HJT, and check the following items (if found).
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPPORTFOR] C:\DOCUME~1\kira\APPLIC~1\SURF2S~1\dent flaw multi.exe

  • Close all windows except for the HJT window, and click the Fix Checked button.
  • Exit out of HijackThis.
Now lets use Killbox to delete some files.
  • First copy the filepaths in the box below to your clipboard, by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl+C.
C:\DOCUME~1\kira\APPLIC~1\SURF2S~1\dent flaw multi.exe

  • Open Killbox and check a mark in the "RadioBox" which says Delete On Reboot
  • Click File > Paste from Clipboard.
  • Click on the Red button with a Cross, and answer Yes when prompted to Backup and Delete the pasted files.
  • Answer Yes when prompted to Reboot now.

After Rebooting, can you delete the following Folder.
C:\Documents and Settings\kira\Application Data\SURF2S~1

Note: This will be a folder whose first 6 letters are SURF2S~1

Now run ATF Cleaner
  • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the following boxes:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch
    • Recycle Bin
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check Select All.
  • Now click Empty Selected.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • Open Notepad (Note: to open Notepad, click Start>Run then type Notepad.exe, then click OK).
  • Copy the text in the box below, and paste it into the Notepad file.
Code: Select all
@echo off
jt /sd A845B9C091EA3008.job

  • Save As KillJobs.bat
  • In the Save as type select: All Files
  • Copy KillJobs.bat to your Windows folder. C:\Windows
  • Double-click on KillJobs.bat(when prompted, allow the file to run).

Reboot and send me a new HJT log and Startup list please.

Hi Gary

Messenger Plus Live & Sponsor WAS installed. I removed It.

I followed the instructions to Kill dent_flaw_multi.exe but got a message

Pending file rename Operations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process

I Rechecked the HJT log and I DID remove this line

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SUPPORTFOR] C:\DOCUME~1\kira\APPLIC~1\SURF2S~1\dent flaw multi.exe

I tried a reboot but I am still getting the same message.

No need to use Killbox, as uninstalling Messenger Plus should have removed the file.

To check Download FileFind by Atribune.
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the programme.
  • Enter dent flaw multi.exe into the File: box. (Note: there is a gap between dent and flaw and between flaw and multi).
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.

This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

Re-boot and run a new HJT scan please. Then send me the log and a new startup list please.

Hi Gary

Thanks.
FileFind found no instances of Dent Flaw Multi so I continued with the instructions.

Deleted SURF2S~1 (Surf2Sign) Folder

Ran ATF Cleaner
Ran KillJobs.bat

Here are the new logs

Ken.

Hi Ken,

Log looks clean now. How is the computer running?

Are you still getting the Pending file rename Operations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process message?

As there are 3 accounts on the machine, can you send me a HJT log for each of the other 2 accounts. Can you name them so I know which is which when I refer to them. (I don't expect to find much, but best to check).

Hi Gary

Log looks clean now Yippee:occasion5:

Thanks Gary.

This Laptop is used 99% of the time by a teenage girl at boarding school.

Is there a list of Do’s and Dont’s anywhere to help her keep this laptop clean?

It seems to be working fine. (I have still not connected it to the internet)
