Help Please: Infection

Unread postby srs » November 6th, 2006, 1:45 am

Hello MR Forum Experts

I need your help please.

I appear to have an infection. I have an icon (red circle with a white cross in the middle) in the start-up tool bar at the bottom right of my screen. This appeared a few hours ago, about the same time that Norton AV momentarily displayed a warning about a virus (I was surfing the web at the time). Now a "balloon" comes-up every few minutes from that icon saying that "Windows has detected an infection" and asking me to click on the icon to download "anti-spyware" to remove the infection. Also, now my computer is working much slower, particularly when I go on-line.

I have set-out below the HJT logfile I have just run.

Thank you
srs

_________________________________
Welcome to the Malware removal forums. I will be more than happy to help you work on your problems.
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!
Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

It looks like you have been infected by a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
Its very possible that anything could have been installed on your computer by the remote attacker, including opening other backdoors and installing rootkits. While we can attempt to clean what we see in your logs, we can't guarantee that your computer will be completely in the clear since we have no way of knowing that has been done to the computer. Your computer could be completely compromised at this moment. It may be prudent to backup your information, reformat, and reinstall.
More information on Remote Access Trojans can be found
here
I suggest you do the following immediately:
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.
If, however, you decide that the computer is not used for any sensitive work, or if you do not wish to reformat at this time, I can help you clean your computer to the best of my abilities.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let me know what you decide to do in your next post.
Should you decide to clean this machine start by doing the following.

______________________________
Download and install CCleaner from here.
NOTE: Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option .
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
Now open the program and click on Run Cleaner
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
You may opt out of cleaning cookies. If you clean them alls you will have to do is retype names and passwords for places you visit on the net 1 time.
I clean all my cookies out from time to time. It's not that big a deal if you remember passwords.
If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for Cookies is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla

Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath, copy and paste these filepaths: 1 at a time.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\aspi677211.exe

Then hit Submit
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

]IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

In your next reply I need to see:

  • the report from Jottis or virus total
  • The rapport.txt file from smitfraud.
  • A new HJT log.

Bob4,

First, thank you very much for helping me out with this problem. It is appreciated.

I am sorry for the delay in responding. I am in Melbourne Australia, and the time difference is a pain.

Second, I am now doing this from my spare computer. The main computer (ie the one that is infected) is trying to send spam email whenever I now try and connect to the internet. Fortunately, Norton prevented any from actually being sent (but the screen is full of Norton alert/error messages). Also, that computer would not allow the virus scan from jotti or virustotal I presume because it was tied-up trying to send the spam. Is there a workaround for that problem?

Third, I have done a Ewido scan in safe mode, and it detected the following problems/viruses:
Downloader.Small.cyn;
Adware.PestTrap;
Not-A-Virus.Hoax.Win32.Renos.fl;
Downloader.Small.awa;
Downloader.Small.ddx;
Trojan.Dialer.ay;
Downloader.Small; and
Dropper.Small.aok.

Ewido reported that it was able to quarrantine everything but the first one (ie Downloader.Small.cyn). However, now that I have re-booted back into normal mode many of the others may have come back.

Fourth, when I tried to start Taskmanager as you asked, I got the following error message: Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator. I think this must also be the result of the infection. I am not part of a network, and I have full administrator privileges on the computer, and I did not at any stage disable Task Manager.

Fifth, I was not able to find the service "aspi113210" or "Microsoft ASPI Manager" in the list that came up.

Sixth, I ran Killbox in the way you asked. It did not report any errors.

Seventh, I fixed the files you asked using HJT.

Eighth, as explained above, I could not run a scan on "C:\WINDOWS\System32\aspi677211.exe".

Ninth, I ran SmitfraudFix as you asked. The Report is in the separate post below.

Tenth, the new HJT log is in a separate post below.

Thanks again for your help, and I look foward to your next set of instructions.

Regards

Bob4,

After an afternoon of trial and error (and much frustration), I appear to have made some progress.

The red circle with the white cross has now gone from the task bar in the lower right-hand corner of the screen (along with the annoying warning message that came-up every few minutes).

I have also got Task Manager to work again. But I cannot find "aspi677211.exe".

I have posted a new HJT log in the post below.

The remaining problem I have is that something keeps putting icons/files on my desktop every few minutes. The files have the following types of name: "bcioyntp.t"; "fkpuukop.t" etc. My suspicion is that it is connected to the file/process "O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [UpdateService] C:\WINDOWS\System32\wservice.exe". Despite deleting this with HJT "Fix checked", the file keeps reappearing (even without the computer being rebooted).

I have not been brave enought to go back online to see if the spamming restarts.

Let me know what you think I should do next.

Thanks

That's great that you have a second puter to work from. Take this one completly off the internet unless we have to download something.
You can transfer logs and reports that I need via a usb flash drive or CD rom.
PULL THE PLUG. ;)
Also in my following directions we have to run AVG again. Please don't skip this step.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

OOOO I saw that you ran ewido.. I thought I might of asked for that which I didn't.
Ewido has been purchased by AVG . So lets uninstall that and redownload the newer version.
Then you may continue with my directions.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware.

  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.

    • At the top of the main screen click Update.

      • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • When updates are completed, close AVG.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.

Do not use it yet.

Bob4

I have encountered 2 problems.

First, I cannot uninstal Ewido 4.0. I get the error message: "Uninstall.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close".

Second, when I ran smitfraudfix.cmd in safe mode, after the promt to select 2, and the notification: "killing processes...", I got the error message: "C:\Documen~1\Suresh~1\locals~1\Temp\A3E71.dn The process cannot acess the file because it is being used by another process". The rapport log is set out below.

I then get many error messages along the lines of: "erysuy.t has encountered a problem and needed to shut down".

What should I do now?

Also my desktop is full of those icons/files I described earlier.

Thanks
srs

Are you running the smitfraud fix in safe mode ?

For Ewido for now I would like you to try and update manually.
From this site.

http://download.ewido.net/ewido-signatures-current.exe

Download full definitions file and with ewido closed run that file.

Then I want you to use Ewido as I described to use AVG.

Bob4,

Yes, I was using smitfraud fix in safemode.

I will now download the Ewido update, and then start the procedure from the beginning as per your instructions.

Thanks

Bob4,

I am afraid that the problem still remains.

I re-did everything you instructed. Again, when I ran smitfraudfix.cmd (in safemode), and selected 2, I got the error message as eralier. In any case the log is attached below.

I ran Ewido (also in safemode), and its log is attached below.

I ran into troble with HJT. I renamed it as you asked (in safemode). However, on rebooting I cannot run it because I get the message that Windows does not know how to open it, and it comes up with a dialogue box of programs with which to open it. What should I do?

Also, the desktop, the smitfraudfix folder and the HJT folder also have the lots of the same "xyzab.t" files in them now.

Thanks
