Register to Remove

Unread postby Nellie2 » March 2nd, 2005, 6:40 pm

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall My Web Search Bar if you have that option

You have hijackthis in two temporary directories, Please extract hijackthis from the zip file into it's own folder. It is important that you run HijackThis.exe in its own folder so the backup files that HijackThis file will create will not be accidentally deleted on reboot.

Open 'My Computer', then double-click to open C:\ (or the drive letter that your Windows is installed)
In the menu bar, click File-->New-->Folder.
That will create a folder named New Folder, which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis". Now you have C:\HJT\ or C:\HijackThis\ folder. Put your HijackThis.exe there, and double click to run it. Scan and post a new log.

Run hijackthis and click the scan button, when it has finished scanning then put a tick against the following, close all other browsers and windows and click 'fix checked'

None of the "My Web Search" items were in the log I ticked (because I uninstalled My Web Search Bar?), and I could not delete "Windows FormatAd" (message: can't delete, Winform.exe access denied). Here is my new log. Thank you for your help.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

You are still running hijackthis from a temporary directory and from inside the zip file, please extract hijackthis into a folder of it's own.

It looks like you are running two anti virus, Norton and McAffee. If you wish to have more than one AV then that is fine, but you must only use one for real time protection and disable the other, you can use it for back up scanning purposes. If you have more than one AV running at the same time then this could cause conflicts.

Please boot into safe mode by tapping F8 as you reboot and run hijackthis and fix the following in the same way that you did before

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows FormatAd] F:\Program Files\Windows FormatAd\WinForm.exe

Then still in safe mode find and delete this folder

F:\Program Files\Windows FormatAd\

Reboot and post another fresh log please.

Your log file looks clean now!

Empty your temp files by using disk cleanup

Go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

Here are some suggestions to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future. I strongly recommend installing the following :

Spyware Blaster - It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.
Spyware Guard - It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE-Spyad - IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
I also recommend reading this article written by Tony Klein How did I get infected in the first place
