Possible Hijack

As I was reading a pdf file from a government website (not that it may or may not have anything to do with the issue at hand) it appeared that a remote source took control of my mouse and proceeded to rapidly open my start and click on something... it was so rapid i could not follow it. However, ccleaner opend....after which nothing else "appeared" to happen. During the event, I had no control over my mouse.

As you will see from my hijackthis log, i am running several defensive programs. I would appreciate you taking a look and let me know if you see anything out of the ordinary.

If not, you can temporarily disable Microsoft Ant-Spyware, run HJT, check it and remove it.

Otherwise, I have looked at your log as you requested, and it looks clean.
I don't see any entries likely to cause the event you describe.
If it continues or repeats, post again, and we will look deeper.

Of course, this kind of occurrence could be a hardware issue.

i was going to remove the hijackthis item noted in my last post. Back in March Chris helped me remove some rather nasty spyware issues. At the time I could not backup my registry using Microsoft Back. In normal mode the software would show up on my Task Manager as running process (ntbackup.exe) , but would not open. In Safe Mode it would open and any effort to backup the System State would produce the following error:

Operation: Backup
Active backup destination: File
Media name: "Backup etphonehome sys state data .bkf created 06/07/05 at 12:07 PM"


Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:Catastrophic failure


Aborting Backup.

I say that, because, while we seem to have cleaned out the spyware, the backup issue still remains today. It didn't occure to me to check the backup routine, until today, when I deciced to backup the registry for the fix noted in your post above. I hope this make sense....

I'm wondering if you or any of your great associates are aware of any issues with respect to ntbackup.exe being somehow disabled as a result of spyware infections, etc.? The original issue is located at http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... highlight=

I don't know of any specific issues regarding ntbackup.

We are, however, mostly skilled at malware removal, and not always involved in the details of legitimate system file malfunctions.
I would suggest the following possibilities for your consideration.
It's your choice which, if any, you want to do:

Start, Run and type sfc /scannow
You will need the WinXP CD. (this is the system file checker)

Have a run at http://www.pcpitstop.com/
They do some system file troubleshooting and might have an idea for you.

Query the Microsoft knowledge base on ntbackup error issues.

My question was really within the context of a malware infection that might have disabled the backup as part of its nasty work. I do apppreciate your suggestions, and will move forward with them.
