Hello Oat,

Great news :)

I need to see what else might be hiding on that PC so I need a couple of logs & scans.

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, put a checkmark in List also minor sections and List empty sections. Click on Generate StartupList log, anwser Yes and copy/paste the content in your reply.
Click Back and Click on Scan. When the scan is finished, click Save Log and paste the content in your reply.

Next :

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply. The log is located in the c:\ folder. -- C:\comboxfix.txt

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Next ...

Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
If no warning....
Click the rootkit tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked... leave everything checked. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.

Click the >>> tab. This will open up all available tabs for you.
Click the Autostart tab then the scan button. Once its done click the Copy button and paste it into a new notepad document. Save that document to your desktop please.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Notice!
A new version of Kaspersky Virus Scanner has been released on August 8, 2006. If you have installed a previous version, you must unistall that program first before installing the new version. To uninstall, please go to the computer control panel and select "Add/Remove Programs." Close all Internet Explorer windows before uninstalling the Kaspersky Online Scanner.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save Report As button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • File Type: Text file (*.txt).
    • Name: Kav.txt for example
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post:
1. hijackthis log and hijackthis startuplist
2. c:\combofix.txt
3. 2 gmer logs
4. KAV log

You might need several replies to post requested logs.

Yes, the more exact info they have, the better.

Should I tell them about the virus too?
Well imo it would be good to advice them that you have a rootkit and probably some other baddies because if they use a floppy, usb stick or put the PC on their network to do tests ... one never knows what might happen so it would indeed be nice to warn them.

As for cleanup ... that's up to you. :) Either you ask them to reformat or either you check back here when PC comes back.

Hi Kim,

Took computer to the shop today. Reason that my computer locked up all the time because memory card was dirty. He just clean it, now working like new. Told him about PWS-Goldun virus...but he doesn't know. But he don't even charge me for checking and clean memory. He recommended me to upgrade power supply to 500w, he said that this one only 250w. I think I don't really need to upgrade my power supply, since he was very nice for not charge me to check my computer, I just tell him to order power supply for me.

Here is info after I ran Hijackthis....
StartupList report, 06-10-28, 19:18:07

Hello Oat,

He recommended me to upgrade power supply to 500w, he said that this one only 250w. I think I don't really need to upgrade my power supply, since he was very nice for not charge me to check my computer, I just tell him to order power supply for me.
Depending on how many hardware you have in the PC ... a 250 W PSU might be not enough to be honest.

Let's hope further cleanup works ... :)

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.

Bad news. After working with the computer about 1 hour, it locked up again. That's why you didn't see the info on http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip yet, because I was locked up.
I will take it to do an upgrade on power supply on Wednesday and I might need new memory card too. I will let you know.

Hello Oat,

If they need to change the motherboard, I recommend a fresh install as many hardware settings and drivers will change. You prolly will have to activate XP again too.

Ah, ok ... I thought they still had to change it.

How do I know that if he do activate XP for me already or not?

Well if not activated you will get a reminder (popup balloon) in the tray saying that XP needs to be activated.

If the computer runs ok, they might have done a reinstall. Let's check a couple of things in order to see if everything is ok.

Give me a fresh hijackthis log and do an online scan with KAV.

Post both logs please. Thanks :)
