Hello and welcome to The Malware Removal Forums.

My name is curlylad and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I have to let experts check the content of my fixes before I post them so be patient.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess , simply post back with your query and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions !

But 1 question

Unread postby ARFF1Tampa » October 19th, 2006, 5:00 pm

I want to also run a scan on my main computer, as I usually do one every 6-12 months. Can I start a new thread for that computer or wait till my son's is fixed?

As the other computer only needs a check up I would concentrate on cleaning this one first, by trying to deal with 2 sets of instructions at a time there is the possibility of mixing up instructions.

After this system is clean start a new topic for the other computer, much easier that way. :)

I do apologise for the wait but here are your first instructions.

STEP 1

Looking at your HijackThis log I do not see evidence of a Firewall.
This may be because you are using the Windows Firewall.
The Windows Firewall only checks incoming traffic to your system so is only doing half the job a good Firewall should be doing.
It is very important that you have a Firewall if you are using the Internet.
I strongly recommend that you disable the Windows Firewall if you are using it and try one of my suggested Firewalls below.
For your reference here is the link to some very good free firewalls

Kerio http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
Zone Alarm http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp

For more information on firewalls see http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=56#56

When you have selected which Firewall to download

* Download the program to your desktop
* Disconnect from the Internet
* Disable the Windows Firewall, if you are unsure of how to do this here is a tutorial to help http://www.utmem.edu/helpdesk/sp2/sp2firewall.htm
* Double click the Firewall download icon on your desktop to start the installation process.
* You may be asked to reboot your system to complete the installation process, please do so if required.
* You may now reconnect to the Internet.

STEP 2

IMPORTANT NOTE

Do not use either of the programs you are about to download until instructed to do so.

Next I need you to download some programs.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Next please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune ATF Cleaner Download Link
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop but Do Not use it yet.

STEP 3

Now I need you to post me an Uninstall list using HijackThis

To do that follow this instruction

* Open HijackThis
* Click 'Open the Misc Tools section'
* Click 'Open Uninstall Manager'
* Click 'Save list' and choose to save the list to your desktop
* Close HijackThis.

STEP 4

Finally for now I would like you to answer a few questions for me please

1) You appear to have a program on your system called Logitech Desktop Messenger
This is a background process that can automatically access the Internet without your knowledge or permission.
Although it does provide updates for your Logitech products, the fact that it can access the Internet without your consent is potentially dangerous.
It does download and update your Logitech products but this can be done manually by visiting the Logitech web site.

My advice would be to uninstall this program but this is entirely your decision.

Should you wish to uninstall the program inform me in your next reply and I will instruct you how to do this.

2) Are you having any problems gaining access to the Internet, dropped connections or any other such issues ?

Please provide details in your next post.

Please post the Uninstall list and Smitfraud text log back here along with the answers to my questions.
I will review the information provided and provide your next instructions as soon as possible.

I will uninstall Logitech Desktop manager. I am not really having trouble with internet access. Am getting about 14 mbps from my 15mbps cable connection. Only when playing games online do I get a 2-5 second interuption intermitently (about every 5 minutes or so), but it does not loose the connection, just a momentary freeze. I think it is related to the spinning up and clunking noise that my other computer has been experiencing (I think from one of the hard drives, but I'm not sure). I think to uninstall the Logitech Desktop Manager, I'de just go to add/remove programs in the control panel and see if it's listed. If not , let me know your way. Thanks again.

Sorry for the wait you've had but we can get started again now. :)

Glad to hear there are no Internet access problems, one less thing to deal with.
As for the Logitech Desktop Messenger, we will tackle the main infection you have first and then deal with the uninstallation of the programs and other issues when the infection has gone.It is more important to remedy the infection issue first. :)

OK, if you are happy to continue here are your next instructions.

______________________________________________

I have had chance to review your last post so here are your next instructions.

STEP 1

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd

Press "4" and then <ENTER> to check for updates.

When it has checked for updates close Smitfraud.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

______________________________

STEP 2

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Please disconnect from the Internet and unplug your modem.
This must be done now before moving on to STEP 3.

______________________________

STEP 3

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
______________________________

STEP 4

Now I would like you to configure your system to show hidden files and folders

To do that follow this instruction.

* Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
* Double-click on the My Computer icon.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
* Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now please boot your system into Safe Mode

To do that follow this instruction.

*Click 'Start'
*Click 'Turn Off Computer'
*Click 'Restart'
*As the system starts to reboot tap the 'F8' key
*A list of Advanced Options should now be visible , highlight 'Safe Mode' using the keyboard arrow buttons and click the 'Enter' button
*The system should now start in Safe Mode.
______________________________

STEP 5

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
______________________________

STEP 6

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
  • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
  • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.
______________________________

STEP 7

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.

Your log is looking much better but there is still some work to do.

STEP 1

First I need you to uninstall a program.

To do that follow this instruction

* Click 'Start'
* Click 'Control Panel'
* Double click 'Add or Remove Programs'
* On the left click 'Change or Remove Programs'
* When the list has generated scroll to 'Logitech Desktop Messenger'
* Left click 'Logitech Desktop Messenger' to highlight it
* Click the button 'Change/Remove'
* Close Add remove programs and Control Panel.

We need to manually remove a folder now.

To do that follow this instruction.

* Click 'My Computer'
* Double click 'C Drive'
* Double click the 'Program Files' folder
* Locate the folder 'Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker'
* Right click the 'Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker' folder and select delete
* Close all the open windows and follow the next step.

Please note this folder may not be present, do not worry if it is not.

STEP 2

Can you open HijackThis.

* Click the button 'Do a system scan only'
* Allow the list to generate
* Place a check or tick next to the following entry

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)

* Now click the Fix Checked button
* Close HijackThis.

Please now reboot your system and continue as instructed below.

STEP 3

We need to re-enable Windows Defender real time protection.

To do that follow this instruction

* Open Windows Defender
* Click Tools
* Click Options
* Scroll to 'Real-time protection options' at the bottom of the window
* Tick or check the box 'Use real-time protection (recommended)
* Click the 'Save' button
* Close Windows Defender.

STEP 4

In an earlier post I instructed you how to generate an Uninstall list.

I would like you to generate a fresh Uninstall list please using HijackThis

Also using HijackThis I would like you to generate a fresh HijackThis log file.

When you have done that please post the 2 logs back here.

I will review the logs and provide any further necessary steps as soon as I can.
