Hi lorenr, looks like you are infected, but I'll do my best to get the computer clean. :)

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites and save it to your desktop:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/Fixwareout.exe
  • Double click Fixwareout.exe to run it.
  • Click Next, then Install.
  • Make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish.
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.
  • At the end of the fix, you may need to restart your computer again.
  • A report.txt file will be created in the C:\fixwareout folder. Please keep it safe as I'll need to see it soon.
Now lets check some settings on your system.

(2000/XP) Only
  • Click Start > Connect to > Show all connections.
  • Right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl.
  • Left click on Properties.
  • Click the Networking tab.
  • Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. (That option might not be avaiable on some systems).
Next!
  • Click Start > Run type cmd and hit OK.
  • Type ipconfig /flushdns then hit enter, (Note: there is a space between ipconfig and /flushdns).
  • Type exit hit enter.
______________________________

I would like to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
______________________________

Please post the following:

1) FixWareout report
2) Uninstall list
3) New HijackThis log

Also, if you saved Kaspersky scan, could you post that too please.

Start>Connect to

I don't have a Start>Connect to>Show all connections.
I have XP Pro, would it be something different?

Don't think its different on XP Pro.

You can access the same thing by going to Start > Control Panel > Network Connections.

I've installed AVG A/S but cannot see the "Start with Windows" option when I right click on the Tray Icon. I get a list of options, "Open, Run as, Scan with AVG anti-spyware, etc. etc.
What now?

Thats odd. When you right-click AVG Anti-Spyware in the System Tray (by the clock), you should get something like this...

Do you get same options?

OK, got that problem fixed, I was clicking on the icon on the desktop, not the system tray.
New problem...ATF Cleaner is on the desktop, but when I open in safe mode it is no longer there. How do I find it in safe mode?

OK...the simplest thing to do is run ATF Cleaner in Normal Mode, and then carry on with AVG Anti-Spyware in Safe Mode.

It took me a while but I managed to figure out how to carry out most of your instructions. I did have a problem in safe mode, though. In safe mode, everything shows on the screen much larger. I couldn't see many of the desktop icons and when I opened the AVG scanner, I couldn't see or click on most of the options. Is there any way to adjust the screen in safe mode. I tried going to display and changing that but it wouldn't change. I ran the AVG scanner and it said nothing found, but I couldn't save it. I have attached the HJT log below.

Hi lorenr,

What you said about Safe Mode is a common problem. If your sure that AVG Anti-Spyware found nothing, then that is fine.
________

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 9.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement."
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove the following...
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_09-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
______________________________

Please do an online scan with Panda ActiveScan

- Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log and let me know how things are.
