I have created a system restore point following your instructions, then rebooted the PC into Normal Mode. Then I ran HijackThis again.
Please find the HijackThis log below.

Your hijackthis log looks good. There are just a couple of tidying-up fixes. Then run Kapersky. The Kapersky log is just a double-check. If everything is fine then I will be able to give you the final clean-up/prevention instructions.

Scan with HijackThis. Place a check against each of the following:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close all windows or browsers except for Hijackthis. Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Now run this online scan using Internet Explorer:
Kaspersky Online Scanner from http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Standard
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
  • Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

Please post (reply) with a fresh hijackthis log and the results from Kapersky.

To be able to use the Kapersky Online Scanner, is it now OK to access the internet directly from my PC?

You can use Normal mode right? You should be fine with the Normal mode.

Your AV and Firewall would not be working with the "Safe mode with Networking" which was why I did not want you to access the Internet.

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » October 4th, 2006, 5:37 pm

I seem to have hit a glitch with my PC.
I followed the first set of instructions with respect to HijackThis, and following your confirmation that it would be OK to access the internet using my PC in Normal Mode, I decided it would be best to first update my McAfee components before going to the Kapersky website.
Everything seemed fine, and following the update of the McAfee components, I was prompted to restart my PC.
However, on restarting, once I got to the point of clicking my personal icon and being told my personal settings were being loaded, everything seemed to slow down to an absolute crawl. It took ages for the applications to load (minutes rather than seconds) - they are all loaded now and it would appear that they are responding as usual. I am posting this using my laptop, but will now attempt to access the Kapersky website using the PC.

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » October 4th, 2006, 5:53 pm

Just to say that I have now found that everything seems to be responding extremely slowly on my PC. What would normally have taken just a few seconds is now taking ages and I couldn't seem to get Internet Explorer to work at all.

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » October 4th, 2006, 6:15 pm

Sorry to add another post so soon.
I remember that as I was updating the McAfee components, I received a pop-up telling me eScan (which I had installed on my PC) had been updated.
It occurred to me a little later that as this is an anti-virus program, there could be a conflict between it and McAfee VirusScan (as both were running at the same time), which might be what was slowing down the PC (I'm no computer expert, this was just a guess really). I managed to uninstall eScan and restarted the computer and at present, the applications seem to be responding at what would seem to be their normal speed.
As a matter of interest, I got a message from McAfee Antispyware that images had been disabled in Internet Explorer - how can I rectify that?

anti-virus program, there could be a conflict between it and McAfee VirusScan

You are right! Normally when I ask person to run the MWAV, it is just a scan and there is no conflict. But you have a version that allowed scanning and cleaning—so it was more than just the scanner version. You should only have the McAfee installed to avoid conflicts.

Your hijackthis log appears to be clean. The MWAV and Kapersky scans were clean. Here are some recommendations to help prevent malware infections.

You can also uninstall the Haxfix tool. We thank Marckie for the tool.

If you have any additional questions, please reply and ask.

STEP 1.
======
DON’T BECOME OVERCONFIDENT WITH ANTIVIRUS APPLICATIONS INSTALLED!!!

http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 6ea0b5e8ee
Stay up to date on security patches and be extremely wary of clicking on links and attachments that arrive unbidden in instant messages and e-mail.

"The number one thing the majority of the malicious code we're seeing now does is disable or delete anti-virus and other security software," Dunham said. "In a lot of cases, once the user clicks on that attachment, it's already too late."

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  2. Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Updates regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  3. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  4. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  5. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  6. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  7. More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you for allowing me to assist you.

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Unread postby dkwright » October 5th, 2006, 7:41 am

Thanks for your last post and the advice contained therein. Everything seems to be fine now.
Just a couple of questions. I have uninstalled Haxfix, but is it OK to leave Kaspersky Online Scanner and HijackThis installed?
Secondly - perhaps you could give me some additional advice. I have run McAfee Anti-Spyware scans several times on my PC, but I can never tell what are 'good' and 'bad' cookies. I'm concerned that if I get rid of all the cookies, either I'm going to lose some vital information or that some application won't work properly.

Lastly, I can't thank you enough for all your excellent help and your time in ridding my PC of the Trojan. I could never have managed this on my own. Thank you again.

Hi Daivd,

The Kapersky scanner will not hurt anything. You can get rid of hijackthis and Kapersky if you want.

Running SpyBot and Ad-aware will help get rid of the bad cookies if you clean/ delete them.

What I do is to use Mozilla Firefox as my browser. I also have the SpywareBlaster installed. On SpywareBlaster, if you click the Mozilla/Firefox tab, you can see the check-box for Preventing ad/tracking cookies. I have enabled all protection for SpywareBlaster and the check-box is checked.

Thanks for your reply and your advice.
I have now installed Spybot, Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster on my PC and will install them on my laptop as well.
Once again, thank you so very much for all your help and patience in helping me to get rid of the Trojan - all greatly appreciated.
I intend to give a donation as well.

You are welcome. Did you have information on the infected computer that might have been stolen? I neglected to ask this earlier.

http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusen ... J_GOLDUN.D
This memory-resident Trojan attempts to access e-Gold accounts by opening an identical page whenever an affected user accesses the e-Gold Web site.

It then fills out the hidden site with the same banking information entered by the user, thus gaining access to the user's account and allowing it to make transactions such as transferring money from one account to another.

Removal of Trojan PWS-Goldun

Here are the details of my PC that was infected by the Trojan:
My PC is a Mesh Matrix Titan X-Fi, with 2x300Gb hard drives, one CD rewriter, one DVD rewriter drive, floppy drive and a card reader (I also have a Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop, which I have used for all our communications). Windows is installed on the C drive - the D drive is intended for storage of digital photos, but I haven't as yet got round to copying anything to this drive yet.
However, I'm not sure if these are the details you need. Let me know if you need more information.
My first indication that the PC had been infected was a pop-up warning from McAfee VirusScan on 21st Sept. The infected file was called bt848rom.dll - its properties showed it was last modified on the 3rd Sept. - could that be when the PC was infected? If so, I was away for a few days over this time, but my wife would have been using the PC, but she can't remember anything unusual happening at this time.
Anyway, if I can provide you with any other information, let me know.

I was concerned that personal information may have been stollen by the Goldrun trojan like information for online banking. I did not know if you used the computer for that or not. I am not trying to be an alarmist but at the same time, I wanted to warn you.

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

If You do any online banking, ebay/paypal purchases, any other sensitive online transactions...:

Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

Change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
