Hi! tiger_lady and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Vino Rosso - if it helps, you can call me Vino for short. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a little time to research and, while I complete my training, all my recommended fixes will be checked by an expert.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Finally, please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Be back soon.
Thanks
Vino

Hi tiger_lady

1 - Update Windows
You are currently using an unpatched version of Microsoft Windows XP. It is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1 as it is likely your PC will get re-infected as soon as we clean it up.

Please visit this link: Microsoft Service Pack 1 and install Service Pack 1. If you run into troubles, please post them here.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT update to Service pack 2. Doing so before your computer is clean can cause Windows to become unstable. We will update to SP2 when you are clean.

Please let me know if you are having any problems updating.

Once you have Service Pack 1 installed, please move on to step 2.

2 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide a new HijackThis log and let me know what problems you are experiencing with your PC.

Good Luck
Vino

Vino I'm not experiencing any problems anymore, I spent 2 days cleaning this system. It had 25 viruses and 65+ spy/mal ware and no antivirus. I just want to make sure the system is clean. Thank

Hi tiger_lady

Your machine needs a little more TLC yet :)

1 - Firewall
I have looked through your HJT log and cannot see any sign that you are using a firewall. Using a Firewall in its default configuration greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Further information and programs can be found >here<. Please install a firewall.

2 - Show hidden files
Next we need to show hidden files and folders.
In Windows Explorer, select Tools > Folder Options > View
Set 'Hidden files and folders' to Show hidden files and folders
Untick Hide protected operating system files.
OK

3 - Run HJT Scan
Run a scan with HijackThis and tick the following entries, if present:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinUpdate] C:\sex.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avserve2.exe] C:\WINDOWS\avserve2.exe

Close all windows except HijackThis
Select Fix Checked in HijackThis.

4 - Delete suspect files/folders
Using Windows Explorer, browse for the following files/folders and delete as instructed
NB Some files may have already been deleted by earlier actions so don't worry if you do not see them:

C:\sex.exe <=== This file only
C:\WINDOWS\avserve2.exe <=== This file only

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

5 - Scan With Ewido
  1. Download Ewido Anti-spyware from >here< - the program is fully functional on a trial basis
    1. Deselect the Run Ewido now option and close the installer
    2. Launch ewido, there should be an orange Turks head icon on your desktop or in the Systray, double-click it.
    3. Click the Update now button.
    4. When the update has completed click on the Scanner icon at the top menu
      • Click on Settings tab
      • Confirm that all check boxes are ticked on the left
      • Under Reports, select the first option to Automatically generate report after every scan and remove the check against Only if threats were found
      • Scan every file is selected
    5. Exit Ewido for now.

I suggest that you print out the following instructions or highlight the remainder and save to a WordPad file on your desktop as you will no longer have an internet connection until we have finished this phase of the clean up
  2. Physically disconnect your computer from the internet by unplugging the lead.
  3. Reboot the computer into safe mode using a clean boot sequence
    1. Select the Start button and Turn Off Computer
    2. Select the Turn Off option, when the computer has shut down switch off the power supply.
    3. After 10 seconds, restore the power supply and switch on the computer
      • Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
      • As soon as the BIOS loads, or a single Beep is heard then begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
      • If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
      • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, select Safe mode and then press Enter.
    4. When in Safe mode you will have your desktop with the word ‘Safe’ in the four corners.
  4. To reduce the chance of AntiSpyware interfering with the fixes, please stop all antispyware on your computer. If you right-click on the icon in the systems tray you will find an option to ‘exit’. When you reboot, this will all return to normal.

    1. Close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!
    2. Open the programme by clicking on the orange Turks head
      • Click on the Scanner icon at the top
      • Select the Scan tab and then the Complete system scan option and let the program scan the machine
    3. When the scan has finished:
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
      • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)
        Image
    4. When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
      • Click the Save Report as button.
      • Save the report to your Desktop.
    5. Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while Ewido is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper Ewido's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Note: If Ewido "crashes" or "hangs" during the scan, try scanning again by doing this:
1. Scan one sector of the system at a time by using the "Custom Scan" feature. To do this select Scanner > Custom Scan and click on Add drive/directory/file. Browse to C:\Windows > System, add this folder to the list and click on "Start Scan". When the scan is complete, repeat the Custom Scan but this time, browse to and add the System32 folder. Then keep repeating this procedure until all your folders have been scanned. Make sure you include the Documents & Settings folder.

2. If this still does not help, then turn the ADS scanner off while making a Custom Scan. To do this select Scanner > Scan Settings and untick "Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams". Then repeat the steps above for performing a Custom Scan.

6 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide:
- the Ewido log
- a new HijackThis log

Remember, it's worth printing these instructions out before you start.

Good Luck

I activated the windows firewall, cause as per my friends request, they do not want a firewall installed, something about it stops them from getting on websites. I didn't want to argue so I figured the windows firewall is better than nothing at all.
I hope it's clean now cause after 2 1/2 days and finding over 100 viruses and spy/mal ware I have just about had it with this machine :banghead:

And thanks again for all your help!

Hi tiger_lady

Well done on the progress you've made with this PC. I believe there are now two main things to consider and action.

1 - Firewall
The Windows firewall ONLY protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I highly recommend that you discuss this with your friend and install a firewall that monitors traffic in both directions. Please have a look at this article >here< which provides good information and links to free firewalls.

2 - Update Windows
Visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Click Express Install (Recommended)
If your computer qualifies, Windows XP SP2 will be one of the updates automatically selected. Click Install.
Review and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).
Windows XP SP2 will be downloaded to your computer, and the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup Wizard will help you install it.
Further information is available at the Microsoft website >here<

Please note that Microsoft will cease supporting Service Pack 1 at the end of October 2006.

3 - Check on status
After you have completed the above, please reboot and provide a new HijackThis log and let me know how your PC is behaving.

Good Luck

OK Vino I'm done!

I ran the updates, I don't think this machine was ever updated. I installed over 60 updates and rebooted. I had to remove a program that locked the machine up. I figured it must of had a virus or spyware and got damaged in the fixes. But now the machine is running smoothly. I will talk to her about the firewall, but for now I will not install one.

here is the hjt log after the updates:

one more question. That ewido thing I installed, it only has a 30 day trial (I think) and if I uninstall it, will it put the spyware back on the computer?

Yes, I suspected that. Well done for all the effort you've put into rescuing this PC :D

Not in itself. To quote Ewido,
"This setup contains the free as well as the paid version of ewido anti-spyware. After the installation, a free 30-day trial version containing all the extensions of the full version will be activated. At the end of the trial, these extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version. The purchased license code can be entered at any time.
I understand this to mean that, after 30 days, certain elements of the software, such as the real-time monitoring and automatic updating, will stop working. You will still be able to manually update and scan on-demand with Ewido so it is definitely something worth keeping.
Ewido product information is available >here<

Please bear in mind, as I feel you probably know, that Ewido is just one tool in the available arsenal out there and, once we are happy that your PC appears clean of malware, I will provide further information to help keep it that way.

Meanwhile, can you please let me know whether you are experiencing any more problems with the PC.

Thanks
Vino

Hi tiger_lady

Great News! Your log appears clean and here's some valuable information that will help to keep it that way.

1 - Downloaded Tools
As mentioned in my last post, Ewido can stay on the PC and used periodically to help keep the system clean. Once the 30 day free period has expired, please ensure the program is manually updated before using it.

2 - All Clean
This is adapted from my general post for the 'All Clean' status however please advise on any problems you may still have before proceding with the following:-

Hide your System Files
These files are hidden to avoid accidental deletion so please follow these steps:

Click Start
Open My Computer
Select Tools > Folder Options > Select the View Tab
Uncheck Show hidden files and folders in the Hidden files and folders section
Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click OK, OK

Reset your system restore points
This will remove any infected files that may have been backed up by Windows. A tutorial is available >here<.
Please note that you need Administrator privileges to do the following:

Turn off System Restore
Start > right-click My Computer and select Properties
Click the System Restore tab
Tick Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore
Start > Right-click on My Computer and select Properties
Click on the System Restore tab
Click on C: drive then Settings
Untick Turn off System Restore on this drive
OK, OK

Make Internet Explorer more secure
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note: If you are using IE, you may want to consider changing Mozilla FireFox which offers not only better security but it also has more features than IE however remember that you still need to use IE for certain sites like Microsoft Updates.

Windows Updates
Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

Anti-Virus
It is important that your computer has anti-virus software installed and it is updated at least on a weekly basis. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Firewall
Using a Firewall in its default configuration greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Further information and programs can be found >here<

Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file, for more information regarding host files read >here<

Anti-Malware Programs (all free)
Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs, and the updating of them on a regular basis:
  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot is a tool like Ad-Aware SE whereas it seeks out and removes known spyware from your machine. >Tutorial<
These two tools (Ad-Aware & Spybot) are perfect complements to each other as one will most always find something the other missed.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machine.
  • IE_Spyad - Works by placing known "bad" sites into your Internet Explorer "Restricted Zones" prohibiting them from doing potentially problematic things to your computer.

Well done for all your hard work :D
