Unread postby SpotCheckBilly » September 22nd, 2006, 7:54 pm

Hello czimmerman33,

Welcome to the MRU forums.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
NOTE: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Hello czimmerman33,

OK, that's odd since your Hijackthis log shows definite signs of Vundo as evidenced by these two lines
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A17D4DF0-2493-462C-8DE0-D80ED4F8D10D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcspi.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mfcspi - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mfcspi.dll

in the HJT log that you provided. Well, there is more than one way to skin a cat, as we say.

I see that you have ewido installed, so please update and run as follows:
  • Under the Status menu (which opens by default), under "Your Computer's Security," Change Status on Resident Guard to Inactive
  • Click Update Now
  • Under the now-opened Update menu, uncheck "Download and Install Updates Automatically (Recommended)"
  • Click Scanner in the top bar
  • Click the Settings tab
    • Under "How To Act?" set "Default Action for Detected Malware" to Quarantine
    • Under "How to Scan" ALL boxes should be checked
    • Under "What to Scan," "Scan every file" should be highlighted
    • Under "Possibly Unwanted Software" ALL boxes should be checked
  • Under Reports select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and uncheck "Only if threats were found"
  • Do NOT scan yet: We'll do so shortly.
  • Exit ewido.
Reboot into Safe Mode:
  • Restart your computer
  • Contiunally tap F8 until a menu appears.
  • Use your up/down arrow key to highlight Safe Mode.
  • Hit enter.
Please close ALL open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open as it can interfere with ewido while performs its scan!

Run the Ewido Scan
  • Click on the Scan Tab
  • Click on Complete System Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine -- it can take a while, just give it time.
  • When scan has finished, at bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
  • Click Save Report
  • Click Save Report As ("Save As" window should pop up.)
  • Click Desktop
  • Click Save
  • Exit ewido
Next, please run VundoFix.exe again as directed in my earlier post.

Finally, run a fresh Hijackthis scan.

In your next reply, please include:
  • The report from ewido.
  • he contents of C:\vundofix.txt
  • A fresh Hijackthis log.
Additionally, it would be very helpful if you would also include a description of the symptoms/problem(s) you're having. We will go from there.

The symptoms started with multiple popups saying that I needed to install software to protect myself. I believe there were 3 different ones. One of them said that I had public records of visiting 650 porn sites and that I needed to remove it with this software. I was having Norton Internet Security popup and ask if I wanted to exclude it. I had it removed it but they just kept showing up.

I was using IE and was having it close all of the sudden when I would click on a link on a web page. I'm now using Firefox and didn't seem to be having any problems until just now when Norton IS popped up with a notice that it has discovered a Trojan Horse virus on my computer which it has quarantined because it couldn't get rid of it.

This is a very new Dell D620. I have all computer access wired behind a Cisco Pix 501 and running Norton IS 2006 and Windows Defender.

I have had this same problem happen to a Dell desktop here in the same office at the same time, showing the same syptoms.

Hello czimmerman33,

Your ewido log looks okay except for all of the cookies. We can take care of this easily by doing the following:

Please download ATFCleaner by Atribune©

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox and/or Opera browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit von the Main menu to close the program.

Note: For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Next, we need to take care of the following:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Sorry, I overlooked Windows Defender in your first log. Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix. To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender
We also need to disable ewido guard, as it may interfere with our fix:
  • Open Ewido
  • Click Guard
  • Click under "resident shield is"
  • Change it to inactive
  • Close Ewido
For the remainder of the fix, let's stop ewido from launching at Windows startup (a little FYI here. ewido does not need to launch with Windows. You can launch it manually when you wish to do a system scan. The resident ewido guard launches independently once reenabled.) To stop ewido from launching with Windows:
  • Right-Click the ewido icon in the system tray.
  • Remove the checkmark next to Start with Windows.
  • Right-Click the ewido icon in the system tray once again.
  • Click Exit.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection qand ewido guard.

When you have done the above, please run Vundofix again, since Vundo is still showing up in your Hijackthis log (same two files as mentioned in my earlier post). Your symptoms are classic Vundo.

In your next reply, please include:
  • The contents of C:\vundofix.txt
  • A fresh Hijackthis log.
If Vundofix does not do the trick this time, we will have to do the more complicated, manual fix.

Hello czimmerman33,

I'm a bit curious. According to the following:
Scan started at 8:22:39 PM 9/23/2006

Java version is 1.4.2.3

Java version is 1.5.0.8

it would appear that you still have the old version of Java installed. You really need to uninstall the older version.

Additionally, according to this:
Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 8:46:52 AM, on 9/25/2006

C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe

C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\guard.exe
it would appear that the Windows Defender as well as the EwidoGard have not been disabled. They both need to be disabled and remain disabled for the duration of the fix. You may wish to print out the instructions as this may help keep you from missing a step along the way. Also, if you are uncertain or have questions about any step please don't hesitate to ask. We certainly don't want to cause you to waste your valuable time running a fix that will not work due to uncertainty or misunderstanding.

I'm going to double check with some other experts to make sure we don't need to disable any components of Norton Internet Security before we continue with the fix. There are also a couple more automatic removal tools that I would like to research a bit before moving on to the more difficult manual removal of vundo.

That is very interesting. I followed the instructions previously provided to the letter and everything seemed to do work as you suggested. I removed the old Java program using the Add/Remove software tool and re-booted. I checked and it was not on the list. However, when I used Windows Explorer and looked at the programs folder there was a subfolder that was labelled with the old version. Inside was a file called WinRar.zip. I manually deleted this file and the folders.

I had made sure that Ewido and Windows Defender don't automatically start when I rebooted. So I have used the Windows Task Manager to end those 2 processes. (When I looked at the Hijackthis log after pasting it below I saw another Windows Defender process running - I stopped it and ran Vundofix again with the same result).

Then I ran VundoFix again and it says it found no infected files. Here's the latest logs:

Hello czimmerman33,

Fortunately for us, there is always more than one way to skin a cat. 8) First, lets make sure that ewidoguard and Windows Defender don't launch with Windows: Take care of ewidoguard by performing the following steps:
Click Start=>Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit Ok
  • Scroll down and find the service called ewido anti-spyware 4.0 guard
  • Right-click=> Stop.
  • Right click=>Properties area
  • Under the General Tab, in the "Startup Type" drop-down box:
  • Select Disabled.
  • Hit Apply=>Ok and close any open windows.
When we have finished the fix, we will use the same procedure to start, then reenable ewidoguard . Now, let's stop Windows Defender from launching with Windows:
  • Launch Hijackthis.
  • Click "Do a System Scan Only".
  • When the scan is finished,
  • Put a checkmark in the box next to:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe" -hide
  • With ALL other Windows closed,
  • Click "[b]Fix Checked."
  • Exit Hijackthis.
OK, now we can move on to Vundo. The author of Vundofix has thoughtfully provided a way for us to add bed files to the program. Please do the following:

Launch Vundofix:
  • Right-click in the blank window within Vundofix.
  • Click "Add more files?"
  • Copy/Paste the following into one of the boxes: C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcspi.dll.
  • Click "Add files".
  • Run Vundofix
Atribune (program author) wrote:
Like in VundoFix 5 I do not use clsid's anymore. Which means if there is a file VundoFix doesn't find we need it submitted. Please submit the files to upload malware http://www.uploadmalware.com

In this case the file would be:C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcspi.dll

In your next reply, please include:
  • The contents of the Vundofix log.
  • A fresh Hijackthis log.
Also, let me know if you are still experiencing problems with the pop-ups. We CAN get there from here.

Okay. I think I've got this done correctly. I disabled the Ewido and Windows Defender as stated and ran Vundofix which found no infected files again.

While I use Firefox browser I don't seem to be experiencing any problems. However, I opened and used Internet Explorer for something this afternoon and within about 10 minutes got a popup saying I needed to install something to take care of a security problem and then Norton Internet Security said I had an infected file which it asked me what to do with. Same problem as before.

Here's the Vundofix log:

Hello czimmerman33,

Did you add the file to Vundofix as per my previous post? If not, please do so then run the program again. If you did, well, as I said, there is always more than one way to skin a cat. You might wish to print out these instructions:

Download combofix.exe Save it to your desktop. NOTE: (Must be saved to this location).
  • Click start-->Run.
  • Copy/Paste the following:
"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /v mfcspi
  • Hit Enter
Tool will produce a log when finished.

NOTE: Don't mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. Doing so may cause it to stall.

In your next post, please include
  • A new Hijackthis log.
  • The Combofix log
***use separate posts to ensure the logs don't get cut off!***

Hello again:

I found out today where my virus came from. Last week I was logged into Cpanel which my web host uses (Hostgator) and they were attacked. I've seen the story all over the place. It apparently has to do with the Microsoft IE security flaw. I have installed the Microsoft patch at the request of my server company. Of course that's like closing the door after the intruder is inside.

I did follow you last instructions, including pasting that file into the right spot, etc. So here's the combofix log:

Chuck Zimmerman - 06-09-27 20:12:52.04 Service Pack 2
ComboFix 06.09.27 - Running from: "C:\Documents and Settings\Chuck Zimmerman\desktop"
Command switches used :: /v mfcspi

Hello Chuck,

Not many people would make the effort that you have in finding where their infection came from. Good job! 8)

Looks like we may have finally gotten rid of Vundo (thank heavens for small favors LOL). However, there still appears to be one oddball entry in your latest Hijackthis log. That being:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\vtutrro.dll

That file doesn't look legit and I have been unable to find any information on it.

There are a couple of entries in your combofix log that I need to check on, then I'll get back to you as soon as possible with further directions.

Looks like we're seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
