Slow start/shutdown etc

Unread postby ism » September 14th, 2006, 4:59 pm

System slow to start/shutdown. May need several reboots before desktop loads properly - blank screen with wallpaper only - no icons, taskbar etc.
Sometimes locks up - unable to close programs from Task Manager - have to reboot.

Hi ism and welcome to malwareremoval forums

I am currently looking over your log. As I am an Undergraduate, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Thanks for your patience!

Hi ism

Is this yours or company network ISP? O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{7F1E56DC-922F-431A-B633-B0974BB62611}: NameServer = 194.168.4.100 194.168.8.100

Can I ask if you or an administrator set these restrictions with a program like Spybot S&D or something similar... If not, they should be fixed...check them with the others if you decide to fix

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Did you put these items in your trusted zone. If you did not, or if you don't need them there for access, they should be removed; otherwise, your giving those sites unfettered access to your computer...
check these also if you decide to fix

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://register-tesco.qa.business.ntl.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://memberservices.tesco.net

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTStartup] C:\Program Files\Creative\Splash Screen\CTEaxSpl.EXE /run
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Please download Ewido to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install Ewido by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch Ewido is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
Note: If the Update now option is grayed out, follow the steps below.
      • Click on Update on the toolbar.
      • Under Manual update, click on the Start Update button.
      • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
Ewido manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that Ewido is closed before installing the update.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido and run a full scan.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act?
      • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
    • Under How to scan?
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software:
      • All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports:
      • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan?
      • Select Scan every file.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan the machine.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below.
IMPORTANT : Don't click on the "Save Scan Report" button before you did hit the "Apply all Actions" button.
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine (1), if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu. (2)
    • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button. (3)

      Image
  • When done, click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the Ewido Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
  • Scan Options:
  • Scan Archives
  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post:
  • Ewido log

Hi Dan - apologies for the delay and thanks for your help

Quick answer to your queries

PC is home stand alone - ISP is tesco.net on dial up - does this explain 017? Should it be checked and fixed?

06 - restrictions - I ran SpyBot S&D over a year ago - it caused problems (can't remember what) and was removed. Currently run SpywareBlaster.
I haven't (deliberately) set any restrictions

015 - trusted zone - can't access the first, the second is exactly what it says. I didn't place them in the trusted zone - I assume that happened during automatic set up.

For info, security on this PC is Avast, Zone Alarm, AdAware, SpywareBlaster, A squared.

XP sp2 - updates up to date.

Time permitting, I should have the other logs for you in the next couple of days.

thanks

Hi ism
Your log is now clean.
You say
Ewido drew a blank so no log

I'm suprised that ewido didn't pick up a few tracking cookies.
Its important that I see the results of these logs even if as you say "it drew a blank" because I have the responsibility when I say your log is clean.
So if you have the log it produced could I see it please It may have quarantined items.
I need to see these items, and to insruct you to delete them.
You didn't say if you have improvement?
How are things at this point in time?
Thanks dan

Hi Ism

Download and Save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there!

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script.

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

There is another vbs included to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your prefered picture press apply & then ok to exit and then press F5.

You will need to do this step for every user account.

let me know how things are.
Thanks dan

Hi Dan

Tried cleandesktop.
Rattled through up to "press F5" - nothing happened.
Had to reboot. Got desktop back on third reboot. First two reboots, it stalled at the welcome screen, played the jingle then eventually brought up the background picture, but no taskbar, icons, functions etc - this was part of the original problem, so probably coincidence that it did this after running cleandesktop.

Hi ism

Your problem doesn't seem malware related now.
May I suggest you visit one of these forums and ask in the software\hardware sections
http://forum.computertrouble.co.uk/index.php
http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?

A few things to help with possible threats in the future would be to download run and keep all these programs updated.
Adaware
spybot seach & destroy
spyware Blaster

Always keep windows patched and updated.
And it goes without saying do not open Email from someone you don't know.

To find some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
Thanks dan
