HijackThis! Log.

Unread postby Mrbigt » May 31st, 2005, 11:22 am

Hello
I need some major help and was told this is the best place. I cannot find/unhide windows\system32, I cannot open regedit and I cannot run virus scanners (except when Panda platinum is running- hmmm?).
NOD32 AMON finds about 300 files in system32 every reboot- similar names crop up (porn.exe, free crak woks with everything.exe etc.)
Anyway, HijackThis! log:

Hey Mrbigt,

From the looks of the HJT Log you ran it in Safe Mode,

Please run a HJT Scan from Normal Mode and post the Log back here

Oops. Sorry: I was unable to run HJT before in normal mode. However, Panda's presence has removed this fault. Here is the log:

Mrbigt,

Hello! and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.

Copy this to notepad or print it off so you can follow it,

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

Web Related

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Before we begin, let's move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

If it is on a disk then please move it onto your computer, and into its own folder as stated above

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing)

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Also from your HJT Log I can see you are running 3 Antivirus programs, this is not advised as they can conflict with each other:

nod32
Panda
Norton

Please disable or Uninstall 2 of them and only use them for a second opinion so to speak

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Thanks Bertha. A couple of notes: I don't actually have Norton on my computer anymore; why was it noted by HJT?
Also, HJT is in it's own folder- it's just the folder is inside another folder which I created and named Fileplanet Temp- I use it to store game patches for myself.
Sorry if that sounds flippant!

hey,

Well in all honesty even though you may not have Norton on your system it really beds itself down in your registry and can be very difficult to remove, so this is likely to be why

Also as long as HJT is in its own folder then that is ok

Please post a new HJT Log when complete

Bertha,
Trend picked up nothing, nor did Panda (I have uninstalled NOD32). I deleted the entries in HJT. The WEB RELATED entry in Add/Remove programs was not present, and so everything went as you said. However, I still cannot see windows\system32, even with all hidden files and operating system related files not hidden (using run: control folders).

By the by, after running the Trend scan, I noticed that the number of ZA intrusions had increased significantly- the number of high rated had gone from 78 to 178! Is it possible ZA is stopping Trend performing a proper scan.
Also, HJT keeps throwing up this error message:
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modRegistry_IniGetString(sFile=system.ini, sSection=boot, sValue=Shell)
Error #53 - File not found

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable

Hey,

I dotn see any problems at all with your HJT Log, but before I give the all clean I wanted to be sure things were ok now.

Yes it is possible that ZA is stopping TrendMicro but I think its unlikely,

As for the error message in HJT, well that is something merijn, (who mkaes HJT) will find helpful adn be able to use for future builds, he may also be able to tell you what is causing it, so maybe email him like it asks?

How is everything running now?

Everything appears to be fine. However, as I said I cannot make system32 appear. The system tools in start\Accessories is also missing. Also, right clicking/attempting to delete/run certains programs (acrobat, Emperor: ROTMK, etc) appears to have the effect of END TASK on explorer. I think that the infection is gone, but the effects are still around.
Why?
If you can't help, then it's okay. My computer could probably do with a clean format and partition.

Hey,

What I recommed you do is go here and post your problem - http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums ... d=sw_winxp

They will be able to help you far better than I can, :D

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I agree with that suggestion, and the one from Bettha to post at Dell.

The board that Bertha suggests you visit are experts with windows itself, let them know that you have been here at MWR and provide them a link to this topic.

Best of luck.

Thank you very much!
All of the suggestions above were covered before I got infected (except the Windows Update... )
Will ASquared be a good replacement for spyware blaster and SpyBot?
Oh- one remaining problem (one for Dell forum I suspect). I cannot disable System restore.

Anyway- thanks again!

By the by, which AV do you recommend?
I have access to Norton Systemworks suite, NOD32 or Panda Security suite.

If you ask 20 people you will get 20 differnet answers to those questions.

The best answer without picking one product, is the one you are comfortable with using and are keeping up to date.

Try our public library, computer safety online topic for some recommended products.

A2 is a trojan hunter, spyware blaster is a activeX killbit killer, Spybot is a anti-malware application.

So the answer is not which one, But all.
