Sorry about the delay in answering. I made an extensive backup, just in case.

Two Antivirus programs running:
I'm running only one Antivirus program, McAfee. I have the security suite, which includes a firewall, antivirus program, etc. The computer came with a backup application that automatically backs up to another hard drive using Norton Ghost. Maybe you saw Norton or Symantec.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\F3BEF78FA5.sys
I deleted this file (actually copied it to a folder in MyDocuments and then deleted the file in the system folder), rebooted, and everything seemed to start normally.

I see you are using Wild Tangent. It is not malware, but is sometimes thought to bring malware along. Unless you are an extremely avid games player, I recommend you fix this...

Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although it’s not technically considered spyware, it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including
  1. Operating System Version
  2. CPU Type and Speed
  3. Memory Amount
Video Card type and Driver Version
  4. Sound Card type and Driver Version
  5. DirectX Version
Location that the Web Driver was installed from
  6. It is also a MAJOR resource hog.

Glad to hear things are running better.

Let me look at 1 more log to be certain nothing remains.

Download this file - combofix.exe

and save it to your desktop.

go to start --> run and copy/paste in the following:

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /v vtsrq

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

In your next post, please include
    combofix log

Wild Tangent
This computer is never used for games, so I used add/remove programs to delete it. I think it was part of the original Dell installation, because the WildTangent "Ready to Uninstall" said "The Wildtangent Game Web Driver is a media player for your games. The following items depend upon the Web Driver to function. Wildtangent Web Driver and Dell Game Console were listed. I uninstalled both.

Are Things Running Better?
I hope so. All problems are intermittent, so I never know immediately. Shortly before going through the steps in your last post (asked to remove the win32 file). the computer completely refused to shutdown. The desktop remained, didn't darken when shutdown requested, and hibernate didn't work. I didn't have this problem earlier (partial shutdowns occurred), and I no longer have it.

There's only one problem at the present time, the Drive Letter Access Component screen appears, saying: "Driver Letter Access component has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft...." There's a debug button, which I used. The screen appears during most startups, but doesn't seem to cause any problems

Yes, still here. I'll be leaving shortly for a trip that will last about a month, and was busy resolving problems that seem to occur at the last moment.

I agree it must be something else; if you missed it, it is really an obscure issue. The checks were interesting; wish I knew more about interpreting them.

Computer went back to it's old tricks, not shutting down properly.

I decided to try Norton Ghost again, and do my surprise it worked. I picked an earlier restore point and it went back (but also erased all the later restore points, unfortunately, as I didn't pick the best one). However, the problems that plagued me seem to be gone.

Bob - many thanks for stepping in and working on my odd-ball problem.
