Hi sumo,

Welcome to Malware Removal forum. I'm Hillbillycj I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I realise that you need
your computer clean and working normally as quickly as possible, and I will work hard with you to that end.

As an Undergraduate helper my responses to you have to be checked by the instructors, which, of course, takes time. :D

I will get back with you shortly... :D

Hi Sumo

There are a couple of things I see in your log, but before we get our teeth into them I have a question for you.

I have tried resetting my computer to an earlier restore date but its having none of it i have noticed something keeps coming up about the windows defender checkpoint

Can you tell me a little bit more about what Defender is reporting?

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

  • Norton AV
  • Netguard

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

There are basically two types of these programs:
On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, it runs in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as:
Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict. I would suggest disabling or uninstalling Netguard as it will probably be easier to do than Norton.

Please uninstall your version of Ewido by clicking on Start --> Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs

Please download Ewido Anti-Spyware V4.0 from HERE. This is a free download and offers a 30 day fully functional trial of the program.

After 30 days have elapsed certain features will be disabled, but you will still be able to manually download updates and scan your system.

  • Save the program to a convenient location.
  • Install Ewido Anti-Spyware by double clicking on the saved file icon
  • At the end of the install put a check mark in the box to launch Ewido, then click on Finish.
  • The program will now open to the main screen at the Status menu.
  • The program will connect to the Ewido web site and automatically update it's definition files. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you allow this to happen. (See note below)

Note: If the program does not automatically update, you will have to update it manually.
Just click on "Update Now" next to the option marked "Last Update"

  • Under "Your Computers Security" Click on "Change Status on Resident Shield"
  • Change it to "Inactive"
  • Click "Last Update". You will be at the Update menu
  • Under "Automatic Updates":
  • Uncheck the option "Download and install updates automatically (recommended)."

Remember: From now on, every time you use Ewido you should click on "Update Now" and download and install any new updates.

Close Ewido, we will use it later.

You need to print off these instructions as you will be offline for at least some of this fix.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources. It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, and detects the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).

We need to temporarily disable the Real-time Protection on Windows Defender as it may interfere with the HijackThis fixes we make.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools => General Settings
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • Click Save
  • Close Windows Defender
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please disable SpywareGuard, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean. To disable SpywareGuard:

  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
  • Then go to Menu, file, exit.
  • Then confirm the program is closed.

Please temporarily Disable Norton's Internet Security as it may interfere with our fix.

Locate the icon in the system tray. To disable it:

  • Right click on the icon
  • Choose Disable from the menu

You can re-enable it after we are done.

Next I need you to show Hidden files and Folders like this:

Click on Start then My Computer. On the tool bar at the top of the window choose:
  • Tools
  • Now choose Folder Options from the pull down menu
  • Click on View.
  • Click on Show Hidden Files and Folders
  • Click on Apply
  • Click on OK

Please run HiJack This

Click on Scan Only

Place a check mark against each of the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [108.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\STUART~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\108.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [108.tmp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\STUART~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\108.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [109.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\STUART~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\109.tmp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [109.tmp.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\STUART~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\109.tmp.exe

Click on Fix Checked

Close HiJack This.

Reboot into Safe Mode like this:

By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Click on Start --> My Computer --> Local Disk C:

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\your account name\local settings\temp
and make sure that the following files are no longer there:

108.tmp.exe <--If found please delete
109.tmp.exe <--If found please delete

Open Ewido Anti-Spyware

Make sure you close all open windows/programs/folders, and have nothing else open while Ewido performs its scan.

  1. Click on scanner on the tool bar at the top of the Ewido desktop.
  2. Click on Settings
  3. Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
  4. Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
  5. Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
  6. On right side under Reports: click on Automatically Generate Report After Every Scan.
  7. Under What to scan select scan every file
  8. Click on scan Tab
  9. Click on Complete system scan
  10. Let the program scan the machine. This process will take a long time to complete.
  11. After the scan has finished, at the bottom of the screen click Apply All Actions
  12. Click Save report
  13. Click Save Report As (The "Save File As" window should open)
  14. Click desktop
  15. Click Save
  16. Close Ewido

Reboot into Normal Mode

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

    o Scan Options:

    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Re-run HiJack This

Please post:

The new HiJack This log.
The Ewido log.
The Kaspersky log.

How is the computer running. Did the IE and OE icons come back?

Please let me know.

Thanks :)
