help with hijacked IE - log posted

Unread postby stardog » May 16th, 2005, 7:24 am

Hi

I was looking for a software to download for free, and got infected with some hijack software I think. Now I keep getting pop-ups or redirected when I use IE. My pc also takes many restarts/loads before it can startup. Not sure if this is related to any spyware :(

Some of the sites I am redirected to include:

sexsearch
http://69.42.87.219/e.html
http://69.42.87.221/leadermarkets/kmart/kmart.html
http://www.popupsearches.com/search.php?query=testing
and a tools4generation or something like that, can't get that site to appear right now.

I have downloaded and installed adaware, spybot, spywareblaster, cwshredder, microsoft antispyware beta, spywareguard, spyad2. I also have norton internet security. I have run adaware, spybot, ms antispyware in safe mode and removed some spyware. The first time I ran adaware, I removed the negligible risk items as instructed (not sure if I misunderstood the instructions) by one site, and I believe that caused me to be unable to run my Norton Internet Security, and windows search assistant, not sure if it caused any other problems. Luckily the same site advised not to disable system restore, so I was able to do system restore and resolve these problems. Then I ran adaware, ms antispyware, spybot again but did not remove the negligible risk items.

However, my IE is still being redirected. After installing spywareguard and spyad2, there are a few less redirections and pop-ups, but they still do appear, though some pages fail to load.

I ran hijackthis with all the spyware tools turned off. Pls see log below.

Please help me with detailed instructions on how to resolve this? I am a novice user and these IE problems are giving me alot of problems and hindering me in my work.

Forgot to mention that after installing spyware guard and spyad2 my yahoo search page loads but says :"done, but with errors on page" or "error on page"

Also a new redirect which just popped up:

Hey Stardog,

Copy these instructions to notepad for reference

You have a Lop infection

You have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

Post a new log. please amke sure it is all bunched up to not spread out as this Log you posted was, makes it easier to read (if your unsure what I mean look at the other Hijackthis Logs on the forum)

You probably had wordwrap turned on, turn off before copy/paste.

Hi Bertha and ChrisRLG

Thanks so much for telling me about the log and the wordwrap. I was wondering why my log was all spread out. I turned off the wordwrap, pls let me know if the log is still difficult to read.

Bertha, I followed the instructions you gave and am posting the new log below. When I installed Messenger Plus!, I opted not to install the sponsor program, but I guess it made its way into the pc regardless. Won't install Messenger Plus! again!

I closed all IE windows, removed Messenger Plus! in add/remove programs. There was no sponsor screen, not on my taskbar either. THere was no code to input, but I was allowed to uninstall it successfully. Then I restarted my pc and did a new Hijackthis log. However, when I browsed to c drive, program files, messenger plus and its plugins were all still there, though I had uninstalled them all.

My Microsoft Antispyware beta just did a scheduled scan before I uninstalled messenger plus, and it removed Transponder.ABetterInternet.Aurora Spyware and Begin2Search Browser Plug-in. It also found Messenger Plus! Software Bundler. This is probably dumb, but I was not sure if I should remove it with MS Antispyware? It also listed Kazaa software bundler. I do not mind removing kazaa as well, but it seems many of my mp3 files are also infected, can I get rid of the kazaa adware without losing my mp3 files?

I did a rescan with MS antispyware after removing messenger plus and restarting, and it still lists messenger plus (software bundler).

Thanks very much

You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

stardog,

Copy the following to notepad for reference

===============

Go to www.trendmicro.com, and then:

1. Click "Free Online Scan".
2. Click "Scan now, it's free".

It'll take a few minutes to download (especially with a dialup connection), so be patient. When it's down:

1. Select all available drives.
2. Check(tick) "Auto Clean".
3. Click "Scan".

When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

===============

You have one (or more) of these programs running on your machine and that is good.

Winpatrol
Spywareguard
Spybot s&d (Teatimer option)

But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis they need to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Right click the running icon of spybot's teatimer, and choose exit.
Right click the running icon of winpatrol, and choose exit.
Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program, Menu, file, exit, and confirm the programs close.

Unless they are turned off they could interfer with the fix by hijackthis.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CPQHotKeys] hotkeysvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [CPQHotKeys] hotkeysvc.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CPQHotKeys] hotkeysvc.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [CPQHotKeys] hotkeysvc.exe

O23 - Service: asurscsi - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\CHARMA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\MSI5CF.tmp (file missing)

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders: see here - http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Search for...

hotkeysvc.exe

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode" see here - http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... ec_doc_nam

Run Cleanup to empty all your
Temporary Internet Folders as Hijackthis and other programs
leave a lot of junk behind:

http://cleanup.stevengould.org

===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Hi Bertha

I have followed the instructions, except that when I printed out the instructions it did not contain the part about MS AntiSpyware, so what I did when I fixed the stuff with Hijackthis was only shutdown MS Antispyware, and it said that would mean no real-time protection, so I hope that works.

I also came across the phrase teatimer while installing all these spyware tools but I'm afraid I don't remember where and I did not select that option as I did not know what it was. So there was no spybot teatimer running icon to close. Now I can't find the teatimer option in spybot.

The online scan found TROJ_ISTBAR.CO in the file ysbinstall_1002755_3.exe which came with the Sonar Music Producer Edition 4.0 I downloaded recently. That file has been deleted. Nothing else was detected.

A search for hotkeysvc.exe with hidden and system files showing came up with nothing.

I then did the cleanup.

So far I have not dared to surf much yet but there have been no pop-ups. The new log is below.

Please let me know how it looks?

Thanks so much!

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
