Always have your anti virus and firewall running at start up.
Any of the other I have listed should be up and running before your going to :
surf the net
check E mail
use Instant messenger programs.

If that is the most that you do with your computer let them start up at start up.

I seem to have another file similar to the other. It hasn't really caused problems, it just slows start-up and runs in the background -- of course, I haven't been able to delete it for good and disable start-up (for good).

ctfmon.exe -- in the System32 folder, @ least the main file that runs as a process

I looked it up and it came up as a MS Office component or something, although it was also listed as a trojan. It seems that's my case because it suddenly has appeared and doesn't wanna go away.

Do Not Delete that file. It is a valid file and needed for programs ( office ) to run correctly. The one that is mentioned on the internet that could be a trojan is usualy found running from another location. In your case it is running from the system32 folder. Yours is the good file. ;)
