help! Trojan & Spyware Quake wrecking havoc...

Unread postby firehooves » August 16th, 2006, 10:18 am

note: i am on a different computer right now, not my infected one.
Last night SpyWare Quake 2.0 appeared on my computer, and from what ive googled, along with it comes a Trojan virus.
I tried to put my computer in safe mode to scan for it, but after spending more than 30 seconds (estimate) in safe mode, my computer would restart again in safe mode. :?
I restored my computer to a few days before, when i know i did not have the virus, and the tray icons for spyware quake were gone. I assumed the virus was as well, and started norton to run through the night while I slept, and the only reason i COULD sleep was knowing that norton would find bad files and get rid of them.
I walked up to the computer this morning and it had restarted, i thought it might have something to do with norton but was puzzled because i should have been given the option to do that, as well as delete the infected files norton found. I went into program files and Spyware Quake was still there, so i deleted it (mistake? how will this affect ways of getting rid of the virus?). I went into c:\windows\ and there are a ton of weird files that i THINK start with %uninstall% or something similar, and most of them are hidden or something (faded out), i dont remember those being there.
I panicked, and put my computerin safe mode to try to run norton but once again it restarted in safemode before anything could be done, but not before symnatec said it had encountered an error and needs to close.
I just restored my computer to last month, just in case it might help, but i have not gone to check on it yet.
As for Hijack this, i dont know what exactly it is? I am almost scared to go on my computer upstairs because it seems it has been thrown into chaos and I dont want anything else to happen!!

You need to post a Hijackthis log - you can get the program from the download page from the link at teh top of the form.

You can also place it onm a floppy disk or keydrive to move to your infected computer.

Post back here as a reply to this topic and someone will assist you.

Hello and welcome to MRU

First Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Put a check next to Run VundoFix as a task.
  • You will receive a message saying vundofix will close and re-open in a minute or less. Click OK
  • When VundoFix re-opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
  • Turn your computer back on.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Next Re Run Hijackthis
At the Main window select "Open the misc tool section"
    Then select "Open uninstall manager"
Then "save list" and save it to your desktop

Copy and paste that list as a reply to this thread

Your reply should include
    your vundofix.txt log
    your uninstall_list from Hijackthis
    a fresh Hijackthis log

thanks bamajim

Let's do this

Run VundoFix again... when it doesn't reopen navigate to (using Windows Explorer) C:\Windows\Tasks

Locate AT1.job

Right click that job and select Run

See if that works.

VundoFix still won't start...
just out of curiosity, what is the difference of running it as a task?
I also noticed under "Tasks" that norton is supposed to scan every friday at 8:00, though I have never seen it do this, and it says beside the task "Cannot start task" (or something similar). would something be blocking that from happening, as well as Vundofix? (i'm sorry if that is irrelevant)

lets do this
Please disable your Symantec Script Blocking from within your Norton. You can enable this whenever we have verified that your system is clean.
To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking:
    1. Start Norton AntiVirus.
If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
    2. Click Options.
If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
    3. In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
    4. In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
    5. Click OK.

And try to run Vundofix again please

thank you for sticking with me on this
i disabled the script blocking option, and it still didn't work. So I rebooted, tried again, and it still says (under c:\windows\tasks) that it "could not start"

Thats o.k. I still would like to use this tool first if at all possible. So please delete the current version of Vundofix.

Use the same link and download the newer version and try running it one more time please. Using the same directions in the previous post. :)

I used the same link you posted before, but the checkbox for the "run as a task" option is no longer there? do I scan without this? (better safe than sorry to ask, i suppose)
