CCleaner - Discussion Topic

Not keen on the new "Active Monitoring" option, which is impossible to switch off.

Even if you de-select it, it places a Registry Entry in the "Run" key for Startup so runs anyway, if you remove that entry, then CCleaner replaces it every time it is run.

I prefer to stay with version 4.17, which doesn't have this annoying "utility".

Eric Vaughan the author/owner of Tweak Hound now recommends Wise Disk Cleaner instead of CC for the 'Active Monitoring' annoyance.

Not had a chance to use that yet, I'll give it a look over.

Personally I have always liked CCleaner, and have used it for quite some time (like since it was first released), I've always found that it struck the right balance between being effective whilst not being over aggressive in what it removes.

However I do not like the latest release, and will not have it on my machine in its current form.

I so agree with you Gary. I can't remember how long I have used it, and it was always on the top of the 'tell everyone else about it' list.

I've run Wise Disk on a couple of PC's. Its not so intuitive as CCleaner (well, not yet) but it seems to work well.

No uninstaller (no big deal) no reg cleaner (thankfully) and has a defrag built in (haven't used it yet)

I have split this discussion off from the CCleaner Updates topic in order to avoid cluttering that topic.

I have been a CCleaner user for many years. I dislike the new "Active Monitoring" feature. I feel it's entirely unnecessary and, if it cannot be effectively disabled, it is reason enough for me to avoid updating until this situation has been rectified.

If you use the "portable" version of CCleaner, the System Monitor option comes de-selected by default and does not appear to run or insert any unwanted Registry entries, so if you want to use the latest version without the nuisance of System Monitor, this is the one you should download.

Thanks for that Gary. I always forget about portable builds.

I have used CCleaner for many years also and always found it to be minimalistic in it's footprint.
I installed the "standard" version (not the portable or slim version). I unchecked both monitoring options:
Enable system monitoring
Enable active monitoring

I don't see any registry RUN entries HKCU or HKLM :dontknow: ... and I have used CCleaner several times since installing it and restarted my machine several times. Can you provide the RUN entries you saw Gary?

I'm running Windows 8.1 x64

Piriform have obviously updated again (or at least changed the DL for this version) since I've now installed a new copy of the latest DL and it operates correctly and allows you to properly disable Active Monitoring.

No doubt the large numbers of dissatisfied "customers" has made them pull the earlier DL.

I'm glad to see they addressed this issue so quickly. I can imagine they received plenty of complaints. ;)

The old adage ... "if it ain't broke don't fix it" ... is one that many software developers should adhere to more often. Just because you can do something, doesn't always mean that you should do it.
