Re: Security Updates for Adobe Reader and Acrobat

Security updates available for Adobe Reader and Acrobat
Release date: November 16, 2010

Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Reader 9.4 (and earlier versions) for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Acrobat 9.4 (and earlier 9.x versions) for Windows and Macintosh. These vulnerabilities could cause the application to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

In addition to addressing CVE-2010-3654 noted in Security Advisory APSA10-05 and CVE-2010-4091 referenced in the Adobe PSIRT blog ("Potential issue in Adobe Reader"), these updates also incorporate the Adobe Flash Player update as noted in Security Bulletin APSB10-26.

Adobe recommends users of Adobe Reader 9.4 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh update to Adobe Reader 9.4.1, available now.

Kindly help me to compare Adobe Reader X vs Foxit Reader 4.3 in terms of:

 1. Security
 2. Performance

While posting here I believe this also provides information about Adobe Reader update to an altogether newer version

That link is here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/?no_ab=1
That would be what to update to if you use their reader.

Thanks turtledove: for replying

Could you or anyone by any chance have tested Adobe Acrobat X and Foxit Reader 4.3, I am interested in a comparison between the two with respect to:
 1. Security
 2. Performance

You're welcome Haider. :)

I don't use Acrobat. I do use Foxit Reader for reading pdf files, it is lighter and free. Unless you want to create pdf files, then you need purchase that. As a reader it does what it should. I can't say about the security differences though.

Version 10.0 is available.
I use the executable from the ftp site to avoid the add-on toolbars, other junk that comes with the regular installer.
Of course, there are other folders at the ftp site besides /en_US/ for other regions/languages.
Code: Select all
Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 10.0 are vulnerable.
Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr1000_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Notice, on BC's main page, that it is recommended to set the Adobe Reader 10.0 (Reader X) as follows after it is installed:

Disable Javascript - When the program is open, click on Edit and select Preferences. Then click on the Javascript category and uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript.

Disable Windows Trusted Sites - When the program is open, click on Edit and select Preferences. Then click on the Security (Enhanced) category and uncheck Automatically trust sites from my Win OS security zones.

Secure Trust Manager - When the program is open, click on Edit and select Preferences. Then click on the Trust Manager category and uncheck Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications.

Thanks again, askey127. :)
Impressive how some vendors go to extra lengths to generate security holes in their products!
