Here's a riddle which I have not even figured out yet (not surprising really) so I thought I'd share it:

Three men checked into a hotel room for which they paid $30. The next day, the manager realized that the men had been overcharged. She gave the bellhop $5 to return to the three men. On the way to their room the bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the three men one dollar. The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

Wrong

30 - 5 = 25 (Hotels fee)

Men paid 27 = 2 to bellhop 25 to hotel.

What are you saying is wrong?

Have I mistyped this or is that the answer to the riddle?

the 1 dollar got lost in the rounding of your sums.

30 -5 =25

5 -2(bellhop) = 3

3 + 25 = 28 not 27.
therefore the men have paid 9.33333333333..... (or 9.3reoccurring).
...and teh bellhop is still skimming (the cheeky thief)!

sorry, i'm talking rubbish....
I re-read that and I'm totally wrong.

the men have paid $25 (the original $30 -$5 refund) to the hotel, the $2 kept by the greedy bellhop makes their bill $27 (25+2).
So there is no missing dollar......

I dont know where the $29 came from....that looks like it could be a mistake with the question?

There are too many numbers in this one and I am not the greatest at maths

Plus I get confused and muddled up when I sit down to work it out, so Ill just give my own riddle a pass.

Most of you probably dont know me... I'm from SWI and i lurk #privacy, but when i saw the riddle thread, i couldn't resist popping in with a favorite of mine

There is a monastary in which the ihabitants, an order of perfectly logical monks, have taken vows of silence, and have sworn not to communicate with each other in any other way. There are also no mirrors or other reflective surfaces in the monastary. One day a demon comes to the monastary and marks a number of monks in the night. A monk marked by the demon will have 666 shown on his forehead. The next morning a stranger arrives, says "a number of you are marked" and leaves. The monks, being devout monks will kill themselves during the night if they know they are marked.
On the first night, none killed themselves
On the second night, none killed themselves
On the third night, none killed themselves
On the fourth night, none killed themselves
On the fifth night, a number of monks killed themselves

how many monks were marked and how do you know?
(yes it is solveable, no theres no 'trick' its pure logic, nothing to do with it being a monastary)

Thught I'd add some simple riddles to this collection,

John is standing behind Mary, and Mary is standing behind John. How is this possible ?

What is often returned but never borrowed?

The maker doesn't want it, the buyer doesn't use it and the user doesn't see it. What is it?

What do you throw out when you want to use it, but take in when you don't want to use it?

What is one thing that all wise men, regardless of their politics or religion, agree is between heaven and earth?

Hey Tony,

Quote:

a ball

This one is not quite right?

Quote:

death

Neither is this one?

Had any ideas about the other yet:

The maker doesn't want it, the buyer doesn't use it and the user doesn't see it. What is it?

Oh and as for the monastrey one I was stumped as soon as I read it?
